Way back in the summer of 2010 (seems so long ago now, doesn’t it?) we got our first teaser trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the highly-anticipated fourth installment in the monumentally successful franchise. The teaser featured the lovable rogue Captain Jack Sparrow talking directly to us, the audience, letting us know what sort of stuff we can look forward to seeing in the fourth film, with a bit of self-poking thrown in for good measure.
Since then we’ve had a few more trailers, TV spots and featurettes to wet our appetites for Pirates of the Caribbean 4, and today we have another new trailer to enjoy, one which mixes together the styles of previous ones (including that aforementioned teaser) but also adds in some fresh footage as well.
Before we get to the trailer, let’s remind ourselves of what On Stranger Tides is all about:
In this action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), and he’s not sure if it’s love — or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth.
When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.
Now that our memories have been refreshed as far as the plot goes, check out the latest Pirates of the Caribbean 4 trailer, courtesy of Cinema Blend:
It’s no secret that a lot of people thought the second and particularly the third Pirates movies severely weighed down everything that was good about the series as a whole (the fun action and enjoyable dialogue was overshadowed by trudging romance and confusing plot issues). Needless to say, when a fourth film was announced a lot of people were apprehensive that we’d just be getting more of the same.
However, by removing both Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley (whose characters were the dead-weights of the last two movies) and focusing more on the character everybody loves (Captain Jack) the series should hopefully get closer to the fun level of the first film.
Having an injection of fresh blood in the cast isn’t exactly hurting the proceedings either, with the likes of Ian McShane as Blackbeard, Penelope Cruz as Blackbeard’s daughter Angelica and even a cameo by Dame Judi Dench adding even more star quality to On Stranger Tides than it already has. This will also be the first installment in the franchise not directed by Gore Verbinski – instead, Chicago director Rob Marshall is taking the reigns, so it’ll be interesting to see how the film turns out under his guidance.
Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated movies of this year, but lucky for us we don’t have to wait too long before it comes out. The film hits 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters on May 20th, 2011.
