One of the screenwriters of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Terry Rossio apparently took some time to post a message to debunk the madness that is the rumors swirling around the upcoming 4th Pirates of the Caribbean installment.
These rumors included a $56 million dollar contract for Depp, Tim Burton as director and even Sacha Baron Cohen or Russel Brand (from Forgetting Sarah Marshall) as Captain Jack’s brother.

“For the record, none of the recent Pirates 4 rumors have any truth, including the so-called record 50 million dollar payday for Depp.”
“Some pretty funny stuff, though. Sacha Cohen? Tim Burton? Studios are way too protective of their franchises for that sort of thing. “

The only confirmations we do have are that Depp will star and that the movie will center around his character. As for the rumors, I wouldn’t mind seeing either Brand or Cohen play the brother – they’re both really funny in my opinion and Brand even looks like he’s from that world normally.
Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is due out some time in 2012.

I loved these movies
I’ve always thought they should have just gone and done this (a Captain Jack centered film) as the first sequel. The character is strong enough to handle the spotlight alone (heck, the character practically demands it).
Pf ft.. And all those who thought Depp was going to get a 56mil. up front salary should have their reality meters recalibrated. Mine at least isn’t as bad as theirs. All of you know who you are..

Well… Keep in mind no one has debunked Tobey Macguire getting $50MM for Spider-Man 4 & 5, so it’s not THAT whacked to think Depp could have been offered that much.

What’s interesting is that Disney hasn’t officially hired any writer(s) for PIRATES 4…yet. So, one wonders if Rossio is being kept in the loop.
Then again, he and his writing partner Ted Elliott are doing THE LONE RANGER for Disney…which also stars Depp.
This could be a case where the studio gets their lead actor secured and then moves along to finding the writer(s), director, etc. like what WB is apparently doing with SUPERMAN.
