Jerry Bruckheimer Gives Update on ‘Pirates 5,’ ‘National Treasure 3′ & ‘Bad Boys 3′

Since the early 1980s, Jerry Bruckheimer has been responsible for producing some of the most recognizable action films Hollywood has had to offer. Top Gun, The Rock and Armageddon are just a few of the smash hits he’s had his name on.

However, a large chunk of Bruckheimer’s filmography consists of crowd-pleasing franchises, the kind of blockbuster entertainment that audiences will come back for again and again. His latest film – director Gore Verbinski’s take on The Lone Ranger (check out the new trailer) – aims to attract the same audience and potentially launch a franchise of its own.

Bruckheimer showed up at CinemaCon recently to promote The Lone Ranger and gave Collider a bit of an update on the latest batch of action-heavy sequels he has in development.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – the fourth entry in the Johnny Depp-fronted Disney franchise – may have received the weakest critical reception of the series, but a worldwide box office gross over $1 billion means that the (currently) untitled Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is still moving along.

Last we heard, Jeff Nathanson (Rush Hour, Catch Me If You Can) was revising the script by longtime Pirates scribes Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and according to Bruckheimer, that work continues on. Disney has already staked out a summer 2015 release for the film. So it’s quite likely that we’ll be hearing further details sooner rather than later. At the very least, expect a big announcement at the studio’s D23 Expo in August.

The same goes for National Treasure 3, another project that Bruckheimer has in the pipeline. That film – which will follow the 2007 adventure National Treasure: Book of Secrets – was to be written by Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro (the writing team behind Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time). Bruckheimer simply said that “a team of writers” are currently working on that script, which makes it sound likely that another writer (or writers) is revising Bernard and Miro’s draft, though it remains unclear at this point.

Still, National Treasure 3 is far closer to a sure thing than another threequel, namely the long-discussed Bad Boys 3. Here’s Bruckheimer’s advice to fans who want to make that film happen:

“You got to talk to Sony Pictures. We’d love to have you talk to them and tell them it’s a good thing to do. Please write them letters.”

The most recent update on the project mentioned that star Martin Lawrence and director Michael Bay had continued to discuss the project, but their busy schedules made it a tricky proposition. Likely, the bigger problem lies with securing star Will Smith (who still isn’t attached to the planned Independence Day sequels). It’s doubtful that Sony would sign off on the project without one-half of the franchise’s leading men, and besides, Bay is keeping busy with Pain & Gain and the upcoming Transformers 4.

Bruckheimer went on to say that Pirates 5 is not only a “priority” for the studio, but also for him personally. With the above projects, it’s easy to see why. The previous Bad Boys film came out a full decade ago, and Smith is an even hotter commodity than he was back then (the same can be said of Bay), and the National Treasure franchise has laid dormant for long enough that most of today’s children have probably forgotten about it. Meanwhile, Captain Jack Sparrow continues to be one of the most iconic characters in today’s market.

Are you excited that Pirates 5 is moving forward? And would you watch a new National Treasure or Bad Boys film? Let us know in the comments section.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will hit theaters on July 10th, 2015.

  1. The pirates movies are always great! I think a National Treasure 3 would be great!

  2. I ABSOLUTLEY agree that there should be more “Pirate of the Caribbean” movies as in peoples minds, we can see a little of ourselves in the characters. This is one way that we can take “mental vacations” and get down AND back to those days in history where (in the back of our minds), the pirates (or what appeared to be the GOOD guys) come alive again and give us another GREAT adventure. Personally, I think that there are MANY MORE adventures that Captain Jack Sparrow can take us. I only HOPE that Johnny will agree (as well as the other regular and new cast members) will not give up on what their fans need to remain alive within ourselves. That’s what makes them so GREAT as these charaters. I ALSO agree that there needs to be more “National Treasure” movies. These BOTH are great franchises and I intend on seeing MORE of them as they come out. “Bad Boys” (I regret) I have not seen, so I can’t speak about them. “Independence Day” (in my opinion) was a Great movie as well and I would look forward to seeing another of them, if Will Smith is up for it. As I’ve said before, we look FORWARD to these “mental vacations” (a place to lose ourselves) and let stress go. When I watch these movies, I lose myself in them and the rest of the world disappears. I hope that ALL those who are willing and available will agree with continuing on making these. I Thank You for Your time and willingness to listen to my opinion on this matter. Thank You again. :-)

  3. I am dying to see the next national treasure! Love them!

  4. I look so forward to the Pirates sequel and the National Treasure one as well.
We watch the 2 Treasure movies at least a couple times a year and they never get old.
Same goes for Pirates, though 4 was my favorite.

Bad boys, can’t say for sure, but I love the two main characters.

  5. Yes please please please another National Treasure with as good of plot lines and historical significance as the first two!!! I’ve watched both 1and 2 many times as I LOVE them and learned from them! Please!!!

    • Just a heads up theres a spinoff book if you love the series soo much, it travels you back in time to the jamestown era

      • Would you happen to know the name of the book(s) or author by chance?

  6. I am very excited about POTC 5! I absolutely love Johnny Depp! He is an amazing actor! I would love to see a new National Treasure. I think it is educational as well as a great movie.

  7. My family loves The National Treasure series. We watch them every year and are planning a national treasure DC trip. Can’t wait for number 3.

  8. I have been looking and watching for National Treasure 3 to come out. It is one of the few movies I would plan to see in theatre rather than wait for it to come out on DVD.

  9. National Treasure 3 should be a priority in Bruck’s list! In my opinion I believe it stands to be included in the discussion of trilogies such as Raiders, Star Wars and Back to the Future. It is one of those movies that simply brings back the kid in us all with that elusive dream of finding treasure by solving secrets and clues that lead to more secrets and clues. Perfect entertainment. I have to be honest and say I was not a Cage fan until I saw him in this role. Having said that, I think Pee Wee Herman could have succeeded with this script and management!

  10. oops – forgot to mention that this is not a movie for DVD, but rather the big screen!

  11. i’d love to see a pirates of the caribbean 5, national treasures 3, and bad boys iii. especially bad boys iii

  12. I’d like to see an Indiana Jones/National Treasure crossover movie. Disney owns the rights to both, so why not?

  13. Would LOVE to see a National Treasure 3!!

  14. Yes!!!! I want national treasure 3 badly!!!! BADLY!!!!

  15. I have been waiting forever to see the national treasurer 3 movie. I loved the first two and am psyched to see what happens next and what is discovered.

  16. I am looking forward to the 5th Pirates of the Caribbean. I loved the first four. I would probably watch another National Treasure, but I can not even remember Bad Boys.

  17. I’m happy to hear that “Pirates..” is going ahead for sure! It is always a disappointment to see original characters, though, leave in the sequels, such as Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. But in this case, after “Pirates 3,” it made sense. They had a happy ending, and the movies could continue without them. Still, they are missed.

As for “National Treasure 3,” not a year has gone by without me watching the first two, and wishing for news on the third! I mean really.. the second one ended with a major cliffhanger, “What Is On Page 47???” I mean you must have intended it to be a cliffhanger, right? So obviously, I was waiting for the 3rd movie to come out pretty quickly. Within a couple of years at most. That should have been already planned by the time you were in post-production with the 2nd one! It has now been 6 years, and it is finally planned, but a cast is not even known. Just Nicholas Cage. What about the rest? This movie NEEDS the rest of the main characters to go on! Abigail, Riley, Ben’s dad, and the President (in order to continue on with what was on page 47.) Please, do everything you can to make this happen, and make it happen well!! AND SOON! I was 31 years old when the 1st movie came out.. I am now 40! A trilogy should never take this long!

    Patiently waiting.. and waiting,

  18. Please give me another National Treasure movie they are literally my favorite movie series of all time

  19. If Bruckheimer does something with National Treasure 3 with aliens. I swear I may never watch anything he does again I am a history teacher. He does not need to snatch aliens when any true story from our past is better than going to Mars to grab a story.

  20. Cannot get enough of the Pirates or the National Treasure movies! To be honest I watch almost anything done by Mr. Bruckheimer!!!!!

  21. I’ll take one of each please, Pirates, National Treasure, Bad Boys and Transformers!!!!!!!!!!

  22. I can’t wait for another National Treasure! I love all the characters and the stories are so interesting and factual. I would see that before another Pirates. I have always been in love with Johnny Depp, and the only way I would see another Pirates is if he is in it. After the first Pirate movie, I never liked them. The story was so hard to follow and just way out there.
I definitely am excited for another National Treasure. I want to know what is on page 47 in the Presidents Book of Secrets!!!!

  23. Would love to see the next national treasure :)

  24. National Treasure are my top 2 favourite movies ever! As someone who was going to middle and high school for these movies, I want #3 now!!! :) A 5th pirates movie would be good, for more Captain Jack Sparrow, but it’s not needed as much, for me, as a 3rd National Treasure movie!

    • Opps, mean National Treasure 1 and 2 :)

  25. I think there should absolutely be a National Treasure 3 ! I’ve been looking forward to it since the second one came out ! Definitely a Pirates 5 as well. Although I think it would be 100 times better if Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley came back ! Also a yes for Bad Boys 3. National Treasure 3 above all else though ! I LOVE those movies !

  26. I love the National Treasure series and would absolutely love to see a new one.
