Jerry Bruckheimer Gives Update on ‘Pirates 5,’ ‘National Treasure 3′ & ‘Bad Boys 3′

Since the early 1980s, Jerry Bruckheimer has been responsible for producing some of the most recognizable action films Hollywood has had to offer. Top Gun, The Rock and Armageddon are just a few of the smash hits he’s had his name on.

However, a large chunk of Bruckheimer’s filmography consists of crowd-pleasing franchises, the kind of blockbuster entertainment that audiences will come back for again and again. His latest film – director Gore Verbinski’s take on The Lone Ranger (check out the new trailer) – aims to attract the same audience and potentially launch a franchise of its own.

Bruckheimer showed up at CinemaCon recently to promote The Lone Ranger and gave Collider a bit of an update on the latest batch of action-heavy sequels he has in development.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – the fourth entry in the Johnny Depp-fronted Disney franchise – may have received the weakest critical reception of the series, but a worldwide box office gross over $1 billion means that the (currently) untitled Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is still moving along.

Last we heard, Jeff Nathanson (Rush Hour, Catch Me If You Can) was revising the script by longtime Pirates scribes Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and according to Bruckheimer, that work continues on. Disney has already staked out a summer 2015 release for the film. So it’s quite likely that we’ll be hearing further details sooner rather than later. At the very least, expect a big announcement at the studio’s D23 Expo in August.

The same goes for National Treasure 3, another project that Bruckheimer has in the pipeline. That film – which will follow the 2007 adventure National Treasure: Book of Secrets – was to be written by Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro (the writing team behind Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time). Bruckheimer simply said that “a team of writers” are currently working on that script, which makes it sound likely that another writer (or writers) is revising Bernard and Miro’s draft, though it remains unclear at this point.

Still, National Treasure 3 is far closer to a sure thing than another threequel, namely the long-discussed Bad Boys 3. Here’s Bruckheimer’s advice to fans who want to make that film happen:

“You got to talk to Sony Pictures. We’d love to have you talk to them and tell them it’s a good thing to do. Please write them letters.”

The most recent update on the project mentioned that star Martin Lawrence and director Michael Bay had continued to discuss the project, but their busy schedules made it a tricky proposition. Likely, the bigger problem lies with securing star Will Smith (who still isn’t attached to the planned Independence Day sequels). It’s doubtful that Sony would sign off on the project without one-half of the franchise’s leading men, and besides, Bay is keeping busy with Pain & Gain and the upcoming Transformers 4.

Bruckheimer went on to say that Pirates 5 is not only a “priority” for the studio, but also for him personally. With the above projects, it’s easy to see why. The previous Bad Boys film came out a full decade ago, and Smith is an even hotter commodity than he was back then (the same can be said of Bay), and the National Treasure franchise has laid dormant for long enough that most of today’s children have probably forgotten about it. Meanwhile, Captain Jack Sparrow continues to be one of the most iconic characters in today’s market.

Are you excited that Pirates 5 is moving forward? And would you watch a new National Treasure or Bad Boys film? Let us know in the comments section.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will hit theaters on July 10th, 2015.

  1. My fiance and have seen both National Treasures in theatre and now own both. We have loved them and still due to this day. We now would love the third to come out!

  2. I really think National Treasure 3 would do really well. The cast that has been comprised of Actors who really compliment each other., please keep them together. It was a great move bringing in Helen Mirren as Nicolas Cage’s Mother. We are eagerly anticipating what is in the President’s secret book, we would all like to see what adventure ride you will take us on this time. I can only guess that this would be a National Treasure beyond what they have found thus far because the writer’s actually wrote very believable scripts blending in history that have made all generations research. The action suspense along with the clever intelligent humor has made the first two movies household favorites, the third could be the one for us Grand parents to explain and have fun with our Grand kids while explaining and teaching History. This one would be spread apart just long enough from the book of secrets to really make money and make us happy as well. Remember The Golden Voyage of Sinbad and The Eye of the Tiger? What they did for the imagination. These stories take you on that magical ride through History and make you say wow! I wonder if any of this is true? Great Franchise, don’t cheat us of a great release of a great blend of non-fiction and fiction combination that you can really capitalize on.

  3. We are very much looking forward to National treasure 3! My husband and I are giant fans of the first two movies and are trying to be patient waiting for part 3. Please keep making this series!!

  4. Will Bruckheimer accept ideas for scripts (Natiional Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean?

  5. Our family absolutely loves the National Treasure movies. Every few months the kids request them and we’ll have movie/dinner night. This is what my kids have to say about the possibility of a third movie, “I can assure you we have not forgotten about the movies. Our friends are still talking about them. It’s actually taught me a lot about history and made me look into the Civil War. I’d absolutely love it if all the same characters would come back in the third movie, especially Ben, Abigail, and Riley.” “We love the suspense and the humor that is always included in these movies.”

  6. The National Treasure franchise is nowhere near dead. even if most of today’s children have forgotten about it. (Which is obviously not the case. adults love them just as much. i love history. and i applaud the way u form a story out of it. don’t get me wrong i’m a fan of Pirates of the Caribbean. and i’d love to see another sequel but as you said, ” the National Treasure franchise has laid dormant for long enough that most of today’s children have probably forgotten about it.” since i already covered the children take that part out and you get “the National Treasure franchise has laid dormant for long enough” seriously. get on it. i can’t wait to see what you come up with

  7. Yes absolutely I would love to see a national treasure 3 maybe on the page Nicholas cage was told to look at in the second one. And bad boys 3 I have been waiting to come out since the second one. I believe both would be awesome lets get these productions rolling!

  8. There are a lot of fans (myself in particular) who would love to see bad boys 3 made. If the actors could get their heads right and learn that their fans would love and I do mean love to see them reprise Mike and Markus, it wouldn’t do anything but make their fan base a LOT stronger than what it already is. Come on now Will! As for National Tresure 3, people have NOT forgotten about the previous 2 and such a statement is bordering on blasphemy in my opinion. I am anxiously awaiting the release and expect the plot to be just as good, or even better than the first 2. Just because one person has lost hope of its release doesn’t mean the rest of us has.

  9. I would rather see another national treasure movie then a bad boys or pirates movie. I own all of the national treasure movies and would love to know what else was in the book!!

  10. Nat tresdure3 yeah

  11. I’m dying to see national treasure 3 and bad boys 3! National Treasure is an excellent series and I cannot wait to see where they take it.

  12. All in for Nat’l Treasure 3! I want to know what’s on page 47!

  13. Looking forward to Pirate 5 and hope good ahead with National Treasure 4 will happen.. Great movies for our family. Also stimulates history conversation.

  14. Yes please to Pirates 5 and Natoonal Treasure 3!!!!!!!!!!!! They’re great films that never go out of style!!!!!!

  15. I haven’t forgotten National Treasure! That movie was my favorite for a while! The third one needs to be better than the second one.

  16. Pirates of the Caribbean 5 would be tremendous!! I am a huge fan of the franchise and would really love to see another movie although I think Bruckheimer should be careful not to overdo the films. It is unfortunate but there can be too much of a good thing, and that would make the films loose much of their gusto. I would also like to see a new National Treasure movie made. I think the insight into our nation those movies provide(some is fiction and some is fact, part of the challenge, and fun, is determining what is fact and what is fiction) is educational and very interesting. I’ve always thought the original plan was to make a trilogy. Both of those franchises are great, in my opinion, and I would really enjoy to see a new film from each one.

  17. National Treasure 3!!! Please please please get that movie made! My family, friends, coworkers and of course I love those movies!! One of my all time favorite movie series!

  18. Have to agree with the majority. Would prefer national treasure 3 over pirates or bad boys.

  19. I would love to see another national treasure movie main reason its been so long since we had one but only if the original cast can return. witch already know Disney does a great job of that…Pirates 5 has to be released close to one another or they will lose staying power in peoples minds an captian jack is always interesting …and as far as bad boys 3 it would be great to see marcus an mike larry shoot it out with the bad guys one more time!……an one last thing I know i’m in the majority on NOT making another transformers movie “dark of the moon” was very good but it didn’t give me that “oh man I cant wait to see what they do next” feeling after I watched it but I also know they made a lot of money so film on…

  20. I hope that a National Treasure 3 is comming out soon it’s my favorit movie series. it’s been 6 years since Book of Secrets it’s 5 too many

  21. National Treasure 3…I sure hope it has something to do with page 47 of the presidents book! Please get this movie out we love them!

  22. Please bring to life national treasure 3 we are beyond ready. These are our all time favorite movies. We re watch them all the time worn out two copies already.

  23. I would love to see national treasure 3 go on I love those movies they’re the best movies ever!!!!!:)

  24. Please make a National Treasure 3 – must find out what else was in the Book of Secrets. What a great movie series and way to explore history. Saw the first two both in the theater and own the DVDs.

  25. I can’t wait for National Treasure 3!!!!! I’ve been on edge since the second one about the President’s Secret Book! Please continue making these movies and forget about Pirates or Bad Boys. Those are over, but National Treasure is still beginning.

  26. The National Treasure movies started my son’s love of history! They make excellent family movies and I would go see them at the theater and buy the DVD too!

  27. My whole family loves the two National Treasure movies, and by the great reviews they received it just proves yet again that the public loves movies like these and that movies can succeed without all the fowl language . I really hope there will be a third movie and that it will continue in the great tradition of the first two. Thank you.
