Piranha3D ‘Piranha 3DD’ Straight to DVD in UK; Theatrical Release in US [Updated]

[UPDATE: Piranha 3DD will be straight-to-DVD in the UK; Theatrically released in the US – see below for details.]

Rumors that Piranha 3DD (get it?) was going straight to DVD have been debunkedThe sequel to 2010′s successful remake,  Piranha 3D, had already been delayed from its November 2011 release date when a British DVD site suddenly had it listed for a straight-to-DVD bow. Naturally,  rumors began circulating that the movie would not receive a theatrical release.

However, director John Gulager (Feast) has put all of those rumors to rest. Gulager has cited safety reasons for shooting being delayed, but the movie is still apparently slated for theatrical release. Here are Gulager’s words:

“The main problem was this thing called “Winter”. There was no way we could ask anyone to strip down and jump into the water. Besides being inhumane and stupid, even with ‘movie magic’, it would be too dangerous. So we waited until it was warm enough to shoot but not so late that our main location became unavailable (open to the public) and started shooting in real 3D on April 25th, 2011.

This is good news for fans of Piranha 3D and those itching for the sequel. Releasing a film that had been shot in 3D straight to DVD would be a terrible idea, given that most homes do not own a 3D capable TV yet. Piranha 3D was one of Dimension Films’ surprise hits of 2010, and was arguably one of the few “good use of 3D” movies to come out.

UPDATE: As Dread Central reports, Piranha 3DD will be released straight-to-DVD in the UK, but still released theatrically in the U.S. As the film’s co-writer, Patrick Melton, told Daily Dead

Over the summer, Gulager edited and picked up a few shots around Los Angeles. This is typical of every movie made. Scenes, jokes, and kills were simply enhanced to make the movie more of an event. About a month ago, it was tested and scored very well. So well the studio gave us more money to enhance the FX. Soon, it’ll be done and ready for a theatrical release. Because of the “Spring Break vibe” in the film, spring was the obvious time to open it. And because Dimension Films financed the movie and owns the movie, they call the shots on when it’s released worldwide.

So, that’s the long and short of it. All good. In theaters this spring. See you then.”

Directed by Alejadro Aja (The Hills Have Eyes), and written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, Piranha 3D was a huge success and whet everyone’s appetite, pun intended, for a sequel. David Hasselhoff and Garey Busey have been added to the cast this time – so take that as you will.

Here’s the official synopsis for Piranha 3DD:

Having awoken from their spring break extravaganza at Lake Victoria, the swarm heads upstream where they look to make a meal out of Big Wet, a local water park where when it comes to fun, nobody does it wetter! Though they came to get wet, get loaded and get some, the staff and patrons get more than they bargained for when they must face the fiercest, most bloodthirsty piranhas yet. Lead by the strong-willed, studious Maddy and her friends, Barry and Kyle, the trio must dive in and take on these man-eating creatures using every ounce of their being…but can they be stopped? Shot in 3-D and feauturing Esquire Magazine’s “2011 Sexiest Woman Alive,” Katrina Bowden and the return of Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer and Ving Rhames alongside fresh bait Gary Busey and David Hasselhoff, the film that took an $80 Million bite out of the box office is back for more…only this time it has double the terror and double the D!

Piranha 3DD, directed by John Gulager, is slated to come out sometime in spring 2012.

  1. Can’t wait. The first was a blast.

  2. WTF Piranha 3D was success in the UK why its going straight to dvd for.

  3. Christopher Lloyd better not die soon. If this movie is the last he ever does, I may have to off myself as well.

    • I’ll join ya. Double suicide after a few bottles of Bourbon to toast his ass!

  4. Hang on…I smell B.S. I heard the DVD runour last week, so a Cinema release for you yanks but us Brits need a 50″ widescreen plasma. Marvellous.
Plus…if the movie is gonna be shot in winter…wouldn’t Indonesia or Guam be a better location?
Faint whiff of bowel movement here!

  5. first one was pretty good (in terms of effects and breast count), if this is a straight dvd release then its all good, b/c i cant watch 3d in the cinemas without getting both motion sickness and double vision, plus it will be cheaper to hire it then waste money on hokey pokey 3d bs.

  6. What?? Shot in 3D with Katrina Bowden??? In for day 1!! LOL

  7. how they bringing ving rhames back? i hope it is semi believable.

    • He has guns for legs… not kidding

      • duh? when he was in the 3d one his legs got eaten by pirhannas have u not whatched the 3d one oh deer

  8. According to imdb, Allison Mack & Sam Jones 3 are also in the film. Despite what i heard about Sam Jones 3 being in trouble with the law.

  9. I actually rally really enjoyed Piranha 3D. It was great camp, and way over-the-top gore. It was funny, and.. well, it was funny.

I was rally happy to see they were making a sequel, until I saw who was directing it.

I absolutely LOVED Feast. I think it’s one of the finest horror/sci-fi films in years. The problem is, after reading so much about how the film was made, that so many other people had to step in to stop John Gulager from doing stupid things, I am starting to doubt Gulager’s ability to actually direct.

I bought the DVDs of the 2nd and 3rd Feast films. I absolutely hated them. Both. They look like they were directed by a completely different person than the 1st film, which lends credence to the rumors about producers being involved in reining in Gulager’s insane tendencies on the first Feast film.

I’d love to be proven wrong. Honest.

I AM looking forward to Piranha 3DD… despite David Hasselhoff and Gary Busey.

  10. I haven’t seen the first. Will there actually be real and natural DD and up sized breasts that aren’t on skinny, blonde, toothpick women with fake boobs though? Katrina Bowden is too skinny and I really don’t find her attractive at all. Surprising she got this “2011 sexiest woman alive” title. I ask because that’s all I’m taking away from the name of this movie is DD breasts in 3D. All I hear is that the first movie should’ve been titled Breasts 3D: The Experience.

  11. So when is thé preview of piranha 3DD coming out

  12. hi just saying well this movie has special effects right? then why didnt you just warm up the water and then tell the acters to be in it cause thats what i would have done as this would have the shooting done and people would have already whatched the film.
