This Is the End is the new ensemble comedy from some of the most (divisive?) (popular?) actors in the genre – with a cast that includes Seth Rogen (Knocked Up), Danny McBride (Eastbound and Down), Craig Robinson (The Office), Jonah Hill (21 Jump Street), Jay Baruchel (She’s Out of Your League) and James Franco (Spring Breakers), playing alternate versions of their real-life selves who end up camped out in a bunker during the Apocalypse.
The red-band trailer for the film presented a raunchy quasi-found-footage format, with the various comedians appearing in video blog segments detailing their boredom, antics, or downright mania while being confined in close quarters with their celebrity bros. Today’s special April Fools’ Day edition red-band trailer taunts fans in a big way, with Rogen, Franco and Co’s take faux enactment of a Pineapple Express 2 trailer.
The script for Pineapple Express was co-written by Seth Rogen and This Is the End director Evan Goldberg – and both pictures are Sony properties – so this is a nice little winking joke to snag some attention on THE day of pranks. Of course, it may be a telling sign if curiosity over a Pineapple Express sequel generates bigger buzz than the initial footage that’s been released for This Is the End.
So far, this film looks like it hinges on a viewer’s love/hate relationship with the members of the cast. I for one enjoy them all – yet I’m still not yet sold on the film as a whole, given that what we’ve pretty much seen is the six guys making improv-style jokes in a single-setting. For theater ticket prices, I still need to be sold on the idea of the apocalyptic backdrop creating a worthwhile theatrical experience.
This Is the End will be in theaters on June 14, 2013.
