Oscar imageEmpire Online has recently put up a feature which showcases all the Best Picture winners at the Oscars since the awards started back in 1928. It’s a good read although a very long one since they felt the need to give each movie its own full page which means plenty of clicking of the “next” button.

So to save time and energy Screen Rant provides you with the much shortened version of the list, which makes it much easier to skim over and take in (thanks to www.tif.ro for the original short list, although we’ve shortened it even more).

My question for you, the welcomed and much loved Screen Rant reader, is how many of the Best Picture winners have you seen? This is all just a bit of fun but if you feel in the mood for a little list-motivated film discussion then tally up those which you have seen and post them (and any accompanying thoughts you may have) in the comments section.

Whatever you think of the validity of the Oscars (the film that wins the Best Picture category every year being one of the most debated topics each and every year) you have to admit that pretty much any of those films which have won the little gold man are at least worth a watch. You may think it didn’t deserve to win and another should have won instead (which will always happen) but they are at least decent movies.

Looking at the list myself my final tally comes to 28 out of 81 movies and as a self-confessed film geek I consider that a bit of a disgrace (well, perhaps disgrace is a bit of a stong word but you get my drift). Like probably the large majority of you, most of the films I’ve seen have been the recent ones. The further back the years go the less and less I’ve seen (the earliest one I’ve seen is Rebecca from 1940), but I very much aim to change that…

So can anyone top a whopping 28 out of 81?

  1. 47 out of 81

    Vic

  2. I’ve seen 46 films of that list.

I will probably never see the earliest films or Slumdog Millionaire (I’m simply protesting), but I was surprised how many Oscar winners I’ve seen already.

For the record: “No Country For Old Men” was one of the worst movies I have EVER seen.
When people talk about “pretentious crap” … THAT is a prime example.

  3. Correction, I’ve seen 48. I’ve seen every single one from 1970 through 2007 except for Ghandi in 1982. And I’ve seen a lot of the classics from further back that are on the list.

    Vic

  4. I have seen everything from 70 to today .
every thing else I am not sure where I saw it .
so I am just covering the ones I KNOW I saw in the theatre.

  5. 49

No Country For Old Men is a better book than movie but I did like the movie quite a bit..Go Cormac McCarthey..Just finished “the Road” and can’t wait for that movie now!!

  6. You know, out of the movies from 1984 to 1995 I’ve seen 10 out of 12 of those and liked almost all of them. But from 1996 to present, I’ve seen 4 out of those 13, and I didn’t like 3 of them. Wow, kind of shows how the Oscars have drifted away from the type of movies I would enjoy…

  7. You may see more as your tastes mature Ken your still a youngin’ yet ;) …so you have seen 14, get some culture dude ;)

  8. Only 13, and most of them extremely recent. Just about everyone from the 90′s. That sounds pretty crappy but for a 17 year old I think that’s alright. I have liked all of them if that makes my low score any better. My favorite is either Crash, A Beautiful Mind, or possibly The Departed.

  9. Wow, thanks greenknight for that condescending response. Unfortunately you don’t realize that I liked most of the OLDER movies that have won Oscars, even some of the classic ones from before I was born I find better than the ones that have won in the last decade or so. So maybe I don’t like them because they are not as DEEP as the Matrix movies…

  10. Oops, forgot the :-P and :-D

  11. You know out of the older films, one that I watched again recently that I liked was In the Heat of the Night. It had all of that CSI stuff decades before that stupid tv show…

  12. My count is 31 most after 78. I wonder what makes a movie Oscar worthy, when Gump won in 94, good as it was I think Pulp Fiction was better over all. In 03 The Return of the King, good, Oscar wothry? NO! The Fellowship by far was better and no Oscar. What films were up against The French Connection? I’ll wager more “best screen plays” have been seen by many.

  13. Surprisingly, I have seen 68 of 81.
I do not watch many movies
    but I have watched many
    of the Oscar winners.

I have not seen some of the more recent
    winners, including American Beauty,
    Chicago, Crash, and Slumdog.

Ross, you need not be concerned your
score of 28 out of 81 reflects poorly
on your status as a film geek.

The list of Oscar winners is not a
list of the finest films ever made.
Out of that group you may have
seen far more than others have.

  14. @ Robert Palmar
“I have not seen some of the more recent
    winners, including American Beauty,
    Chicago, Crash, and Slumdog.”

    Don’t worry, you’re not missing much there…

    Simply irresistable… sorry, I know it’s spelled differently. :-D

  15. 29 of all of them, oh and No Country For Old Men is one of the best mivies ever made. Also I was happy to be reminded of Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind, Russel Crowe is my favorite actor.

  16. Are you kidding? Crash and Chicago aren’t important but Slumdog was good and American Beauty is a MUST SEE. One of my favorite films. Oh and I’ve seen 36 of these movies. The only one in the last 18 years I haven’t seen is The English Patient but I don’t really wanna see it to be honest.

  17. Well, at least I’m about halfway there… 42 total for me. Only 25 post-1970. Of those the ones that really stand out for me are Chariots, Gandhi, Schindler’s, and No Country.

Saw quite a few from 1930~1940: Grand Hotel, All Quiet, It Happened…, Mutiny, Emile Zola, Rebecca, Gone With the Wind. All great films.

  18. I’ve seen 38 of the movies. Mostly from the 80s and 90s. The Deerhunter, Crash and Silence of the Lambs stands out as personal favorites.

  19. Hmmm, only 5 or 6. I suppose it’s just because I really don’t pay any attention to what so called “critics” have to say about those movies. I know what I like. There are a couple on the list that I saw, absolutely hated, and wanted my time that I wasted watching them back, then again there are several movies that I saw that didn’t make the list that I absolutely loved but didn’t come close to a consideration for an Oscar except maybe in some tech field(as in Art Direction or Set Design). Ah well, I’ve never had a problem with saying the Emperor has No Clothes so the fact that a film may have been rated as “Best Picture Year” yet in my book rates a “sucked dirty mop water” probably would come as no surprise to anyone.

  20. seen 38 of those thanks to my dad.

  21. I cringe when I see No Country For Old Men and The Departed there instead of say Zodiac or even Children Of Men, in their respected years. No Country & Departed, it seemed like the Academy owed the Coen Bros. & Scorcese something.
Earliest Best Picture I have seen on the list is 1935′s Mutiny On The Bounty, now that is classic! Amadeus, YEAH!

  22. 22 more than i thought

  23. 1952 – The Greatest Show on Earth
    1956 – The King and I
1957 – Bridge Over The River Kwai
    1959 – Ben Hur
    1961 – West Side Story
    1964 – My Fair Lady
1967 – In The Heat of the Night
    1972 – The Godfather
    1974 – The Godfather Part 2
    1976 – Rocky
    1984 – Amadeus
    1986 – Platoon
    1988 – Rain Man
    1989 – Driving Miss Daisy
1991 – Silence of the Lambs
    1992 – Unforgiven
    1993 – Schindler’s List
    1994 – Forrest Gump
    1995 – Braveheart
    1997 – Titanic
    1999 – American Beauty
    2000 – Gladiator
    2001 – A Beautiful Mind
    2002 – Chicago
2003 – Lord of the Ring: The Return of the King
    2004 – Million Dollar Baby
    2005 – Crash
    2006 – The Departed
2007 – No Country for Old Men
    2008 – Slumdog Millionaire

These are the ones I have seen completely. There are some I tried to watch but couldn’t get through them because they were too boring: Out of Africa and English Patient. Sorry to say I have never seen Lawrence of Arabia or Patton. The one I thought should not have even been nominated was American Beauty.

  24. No Country for Old Men was very good until the last 10 minutes or so, where it COMPLETELY fell apart.

    Vic

  25. If it was not for the Tommy Lee Jones character, then No Country is just a chase picture.

  26. @David Hasselbach

I totally agree with your take on No Country for Old Men. Gods that movie was horrible!

I’ve seen 21. I have work to do.

  27. Almost the same as you 25 out of 81. I definitly need to go back and watch some of the older ones, the majority of mine are from the late 80s on.

1957 – Bridge Over The River Kwai
1965 – The Sound of Music
    1972 – The Godfather
    1974 – The Godfather Part 2
    1976 – Rocky
    1988 – Rain Man
    1989 – Driving Miss Daisy
    1990 – Dances With Wolves
1991 – Silence of the Lambs
    1992 – Unforgiven
    1993 – Schindler’s List
    1994 – Forrest Gump
    1995 – Braveheart
    1996 – The English Patient
    1997 – Titanic
    1998 – Shakespeare in Love
    1999 – American Beauty
    2000 – Gladiator
    2001 – A Beautiful Mind
2003 – Lord of the Ring: The Return of the King
    2004 – Million Dollar Baby
    2005 – Crash
    2006 – The Departed
2007 – No Country for Old Men
    2008 – Slumdog Millionaire

  28. Managed 52 – surprised I’d seen that many of them. Earliest one was Mutiny On The Bounty.

I have to say I loved No Country from beginning to slightly bizarre end. Except for the screamingly stupid act of going back with water for a man who was on the point of death HOURS beforehand. The only problem I had Oscarwise was Javier Bardem winning Best Supporting Actor instead of Casey Affleck in The Assassination Of Jesse James.

And what’s all the hate for American Beauty? It made me grin anyway…

  29. I must have missed something; I thought I was the only one who didn’t like American Beauty? Sure, it made me laugh during the dinner scene and the drive-up window scene but the movie, IMHO, was not Oscar material.

The only thing I could figure was that they gave it an Oscar because the gay guys were the only non-psychotic people. :-)
