This weekend I wrote about the first official picture of Gambit from X-Men Origins: Wolverine and now we have several new photos from tha film that have appeared online for our viewing pleasure. There are five in total and are all live shots from scenes in the film.
If you got a chance to see the low-quality leaked footage of the teaser trailer featured at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, these may look familiar to you as they are all directly taken from scenes shown during that trailer.
The images are not of the highest quality, but what they depict is pretty awesome.
Take a look and see what you think:
Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber faceoff in X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Wolverine charges down the cell block, claws ready
Wolverine and Sabretooth vs. Firing Squad
Wolverine and Sabretooth raid the beach
Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine taking an unpleasant bath
Where’s the arm hair, Wolvy?! And why don’t any of the other soldiers get to grow cool facial hair?
My only gripe with these is how Wolverine is just as big as Sabretooth in the film. The actual Wolverine character in the comics is only 5’3″ compared to Sabretooth’s 6’6″ build – a vast difference in physical stature. We know Hugh Jackman is way too tall to be Wolverine but that being said, the filmmakers make no effort to make him appear smaller than Liev Schreiber’s Sabretooth.
In the comics and even in the classic 1990s cartoon, the rivalry between the two arch-enemies was made so significant because of how massive and intimidating Sabretooth was in comparison. But in this film, he doesn’t even seem to be a physical threat as he’s the same size… even arguably a little bit smaller in some of the images. To me, there’s no match, Wolverine plus Adamantium claws beats other dude of same size with less efficient claws. In Bryan Singer’s X-Men, that Sabretooth felt larger and more like the proper character from the comic books.
Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Liev Schreiber, but I dug Tyler Mane’s Sabretooth if we’re talking about the characters representing the source material.
What do you think?
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is directed by Gavin Hood and features a very recognizable cast including Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Dominic Monaghan, Taylor Kitcsh, Lynn Collins, Kevin Durand and Danny Huston.
The first official trailer debuts next Friday, December 12th, alongside The Day the Earth Stood Still and the film hits theaters May 1, 2009.
