Up until now we’ve only made quick mention of the upcoming Angelina Jolie espionage/thriller Salt in our wonderful mid-week and weekend wrap-up sections (check them here out if you haven’t already, there are lots of buried gems in those wrap-ups!).
Well today Salt has graduated to a post of its very own by giving we, the people, exactly the sort of thing we like to see: Angelina Jolie letting her wild side loose on some high speed stunt-work, while still managing to look like the most beautiful woman on the planet!

In case you’ve missed it, here is a quick rundown on the kind of kick-ass femme role Angelina will be once again playing in Salt:
Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is a CIA officer who swore an oath to duty, honor, and country. When she is accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy, Salt goes on the run to clear her name and ultimately prove she is a patriot. Using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative, she must elude capture and protect her husband or the world’s most powerful forces will erase any trace of her existence.
…So basically it’s Mission Impossible and Angelina is Tom Cruise. Here’s how lady Jolie looks in action:

Now, I’m not one to ever complain about a photo of Angelina Jolie, but these pics don’t do much to sell me on Salt. With the whole espionage/agent-on-the-run genre currently being topped by some true heavyweights (Daniel Craig as James Bond; Matt Damon as Jason Bourne) I need something truly great or original to get me excited for Salt (I will accept “sexy as hell” as a consolation prize, though).
Salt is slated for a July 23, 2010 release. It will be helmed by Phillip Noyce (Jolie’s Bone Collector director) and will co-star Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Ummm, I don’t think the pics were really meant to sell you on seeing the movie, cause it’s just pictures someone else took while they were shooting the movie, not the official poster or anything.
Aesthetically speaking, easily the world’s most over rated woman – pretty face but that’s it. What got my attention was this bit “she must elude capture and protect her husband”. Now that’s something new, a movie in which the woman protects the man, if so then it might be something a bit novel. Personally action chicks don’t convince me at all- unless theyre man-sized like Geena Davis in The Long Kiss Goodnight or professional fighters like Cynthia Rothrock it just seems like Girl’s Own wish fullfillment.

What about Cruise’s Ethan Hunt? Wouldn’t he qualify as a heavyweight of the espionage/agent-on-the-run genre?

He did until Michelle Monaghan had to save his ass (and the day) at the end of MI: 3. After that happened Hollywood dumped Hunt and embraced Monaghan’s character. They’re even giving her character a spin-off film! It’s called “Salt.”

I have to say that I find her a bit (WAY) overrated too. Just not attractive, but that has nothing to do with the movie, which doesn’t entice me at all. I like Jolie in bad-ass roles, but I just don’t see the premise letting it top Bond or Bourne.
They were filming a part of this movie about a 1/2 hr south of me in Albany NY, and it looks like some of those pictures might have been taken there. So SOME of those photos (maybe the top one?) might be her stunt double.
Oh, and Angelina’s smokin’ hot, she was the ONLY thing worth watching in Wanted. She might be nuts, but she’s definitely gorgeous.
Look away Andy, she’s the APEX of high maintenance and only wants to adopt kids from Africa…
