From Game Rant:

It’s a sad trend in the film industry to see our beloved video game franchises become such terrible movies over and over again. This is most apparent in the fighting game genre to no surprise, since it’s almost impossible to make a worthwhile movie story believable within the style of the extreme fighting games like Mortal Kombat, Tekken and Street Fighter.

The next quality fighting game movie is on the horizon, set for release sometime this year. It’s called Tekken and is based on the successful video game franchise of the same name. Here we have several stills and some behind-the-scenes videos to give you a hint at what to expect from the movie.

To start, here’s a gallery of five photos from the film depicting some of the characters and costumes- head to Twitch for the rest. Click to Enlarge:

The trailer for Tekken came out in January and from it we can only hope that there is little talking and mostly fighting in the movie. For some behind-the-scenes action, head over to our sister site, gamerant.com for a 10 minute video and information on how to see more. The first one focuses on the fight choreography and translating that from the game into live-action.

And if it mattered somehow to your anticipation of the movie, here’s the plot synopsis for Tekken:

“A Young Man Who seeks revenge of his mother’s death. He finds his grand-father, Heihachi Mishima, and pleas to be trained. When the Mishima leader announces a “King of Iron Fist” tournament. He finds out that his mother’s killer, Ogre, will be participating in the tournament. He must fight against the world’s top competitors to achieve his goal with no interference.”

If you’re unsure of what to expect, you can just look back on recent fighting game movies for an idea; Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Mortal Kombat 2 and Dead or Alive. With the Mortal Kombat reboot potentially delayed due to a lawsuit, at least we have this to look forward to!

What do you think about the live-action incarnations of the Tekken characters and costumes?

  1. Those chicks in Tekken are hot. Much hotter than Chung Li, thats for sure.

  2. I'm getting kind of a “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” kinda feel from those pics

  3. Awesome! I totally agree with Deacon. check out some more videos of Tekken:

  4. hahah is it just me or do those costumes look goofy?

it's like they took costumes out of a video game and put them on real people :)

at least adjust them a little to fit into some sort of realism

i'm getting a really bad feeling about this one

  5. That's Chun Li. Not Chung Li.

  6. That's essentially what they've done here and frankly I don't see a problem with it. If you played the more recent games you would know the level of detail on the character's costumes alone. Within the game's CG scenes it already looks real-life so transferring that to reality shouldn't look goofy if you've played the game before and are used to the characters.

    • I don’t know what TEKKEN games you’ve been playing, but I for one, am a fan of TEKKEN and I know that those costumes here don’t look all that good on the characters or people they’ve chosen. We’re never going to get a good Live Action Video Game movie unless someone actually knows what they’re doing, maybe the UnCharted movie will go well since the characters were all based off the voice actors.
What the directors do in these movies, is they change the plot and only keep some elements so they can say it’s “based” off the franchise. It’s a terrible way to get the name out so I don’t understand why the won’t just do something like, I dunno, slap the actual story WITH costumes that look good and people resembling the characters themselves, yes that even means looking for someone who is muscly. If they don’t have the hair, they can make a special wig. I’ve seen real looking wigs before, so I am sure they could do that.
I know for sure that I could direct a good game-movie adaptation. Unfortunately, I don’t have any money for super enhanced cameras or any rights to creating sets, but I sure as hell know what to do with it…

  7. I get what you're saying but I just don't think it transferred well to real life. I love Tekken (2 and 3 are my favorite and I still play them from time to time) but this was handled poorly from the get go. Sure, so casting was SPOT ON (Eddy Gordon for example) but everything I've seen so far has been a let down.

That being said, I hope I'm wrong and this movie kicks some serious ass.

  8. Christie is a fail. broad shoulders, square jaw, and what looks like an airbrushed goatee makes me go hmmmm

  9. Really though, what video game — a 2 player fighter– ever had a good story line to begin with? They are all some variations of some tournament…

  10. Good Point.

  11. Each character has a back story that goes deeper than the tournament, tourney just melds them together
