I’ll admit it. When I was a kid, I liked watching American Gladiators. Heck, I even made up my own version of The Eliminator to run through on the playground at school. Does that mean I think American Gladiators should be turned into a movie? Not in the slightest. Nevertheless, according to Variety, that’s just what’s going to happen.
We’ve known about the possibility of an American Gladiators movie since May, but now we know the details. According to the Variety article, screenwriter Peter Illiff, of Point Break fame, is drafting a script for the film which will “feature the Herculean characters as superheroes.” Joining Illiff on the project is producer Scott Mednick (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and the original creator of American Gladiators, Johnny Ferraro.
As unappealing as an American Gladiators-inspired movie sounds, there is some potential for the story. I’m intrigued by the “Herculean characters as superheroes” remark, though I can’t for the life of me understand what it could possibly mean. Perhaps, American Gladiators will be a Rocky-like underdog story of a regular man who wins worldwide acclaim after beating Nitro and Laser in that hamster ball game. What do you think? Sound plausible?
While we still have no idea what American Gladiators will be about, Peter Sciretta over at /Film dug up some interesting info on the movie that suggests it might include some 3D filming. Quoting from /Film,
While doing research for this article, I stumbled across 3ality Digital, a video production company which is listed as being part of this production. Funny thing is, 3ality Digital mostly works on 3D movies. U23D was their debut production. So could it be that they are hoping to shoot the film in 3D?
It’s an interesting possibility, but not one that makes American Gladiators that much more interesting. I suppose we’ll just have to wait it out and see.
