Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters Movie Logan Lerman Percy Jackson Sequel The Sea of Monsters In The Works

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was a moderate success for Fox 2000, making about $226 million worldwide on a $95 million budget (though most of that money came from overseas). The film was always intended to kick off a tentpole franchise for Fox 2000, so it’s not really surprising to hear that the studio is adapting the second book in author Rick Riordan’s five-volume series into a movie.

The LA Times’ 24 Frames has an insider claiming that Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters is going into “active development,” and could even start shooting as soon as this summer.

In the first film, young Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) discovered he was a demigod, spawned from the union of Poseidon and a human woman. When he was framed for stealing Zeus’ thunderbolt, Percy and his friends went on a quest to find the stolen weapon and eventually discovered and defeated the real thief, saving the world from a war between the gods.

In Riordan’s second book, Percy must save “Camp Half-Blood” the safe haven where demigods are protected from evil by magic barriers. Someone has poisoned the barriers, so it’s up to Percy and Co. to venture into “The Sea of Monsters” to find the mythical Golden Fleece to save the camp.

The primary cast is expected to return for this next installment, and that list would presumably include Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Katherine Keener and Kevin McKidd. Writing duo Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski are handling the script; the pair have a diverse resume, including films like 1408, Agent Cody Banks, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Ed Wood and Problem Child 1 & 2. Take that how you will.

Director Chris Columbus (who also did the first two Harry Potter films), is not expected to return to direct Sea of Monsters, but will reportedly produce the pic alongside Breaking Dawn producer, Karen Rosenfelt. Take that how you will.

Jackson, Lerman and Daddario in 'The Lightning Thief'

The first Percy Jackson was entertaining enough – especially for the young adult crowd. The lead actors in particular (Lerman, Jackson and Daddario) had good chemistry and the story is a fun little twist on Greek Mythology. It’s not as immersive or epic as Harry Potter , but it was certainly more entertaining than the Narnia movies (for me at least). I’m not mad at them for making another one – plus, the whole “Sea of Monsters” thing could be cool on the big screen (in 3D, no doubt).

We’ll update you about Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters when an official announcement is made.

    • It was a little too different than the book

  8. ya only thing they got right in the movie was there names and what the main idea was.

    • They didn’t ACTUALLY REALLY get the main idea. In the books, it was to find the bolt. In the movie, it was to get the pearls, so yeah, there actually is a BIG difference.

  9. ya only thing they got right in the movie was there names and what the main idea was. other then that parts of the movie was nothing like the book.

      • I’m so sorry for your head injury!!! It must have messed up your mind with staying LOYAL with the rest of us Percy Jackson fans. Get well soon!!!

  14. GRRRRRR!!! The article didn’t mention that Grover was taken captive (in the books)!!!!

  15. ?

    • The movie sucked ass!!!! I don’t know why anyone would want to watch it.. Clarisse doesn’t even exist!!! She’s a major part! Then Annabeth is supposed to have blonde hair, and I don’t really think grover is supposed to be black, just saying… The movie was a digrace for all those true Percy JAckson fans

      • true dat clariese!! woo tell em’!

  16. true clarrise is the most important enemy of jackson at camp. you can’t just cut her out.

  17. sorry i am paranoid a lot.

  18. Not big fan of the first movie (or at all really), but I’m willing to give the second one a chance. They screwed up the first one, but I think they’ve learnt that now and will hopefully do a better job. Although I will always be annoyed that Annabeth isn’t blonde with curly hair..

  19. I take my previous comment back.. just saw a photo from the Sea of Monsters set and they’ve made Annabeth blonde in this one.. See, they’re learning.

  20. They got almost nothing right in the movie i am interested to see how they spin the sea of monsters with so much left out of the first movie.

  21. The movie was good, but it could have been better if they stuck a little bit closer to the book. I mean all they really got were the charaters (who weren’t correct really) and the idea.Look how well the Hunter Games turned out, and it was because they stuck to the book. They even made the effort, most likely for the fans, to make Jen and Josh look like how they’re characters were described in the books. Would it really have been so hard to do that for Logan and Alex?
If they go a little bit closer to the book for the second movie, then maybe I’ll go see it, otherwise I’m not fussed.

    • wow this argument is over 5 months old. but i hope the second one will be sood and plus even though we percy jackson fans weren’t too impressed, the outside world like it so i’m not to sure about them following the book but anyway… the serpents shadow was sssooooooooooooooo good!!!! i has me totally hyped up for the mark of athena i started it yesterday and i gould not put it down till i finished it today, (if you did not read it yet…sorry for the spoiler alert but from what i got in the ending i think he’s going to make a series merging the kanes and percy and the gang..i mean what else can ‘outside gods mean’ THE BOOK WAS AWESOME! READ IT!!!!!

      • Make that nearly a year

  22. Okay so I am actually super shocked to see that they are making a second movie. I honestly had no idea that they were even planning on making a sequel! I thought that’s why they made the first movie the way they did. How are they even going to bring in the whole Thalia thing now? It just makes me sad to see such amazing books (which deserve better movies that are true to the books) in a way wasted on these movies. I mean, it wasn’t horrible, or even bad, but compared to the book it just doesn’t even match up. Logan Lerman is extremely hot, and that’s one reason to watch it, but the actors are just too old to do the movies justice to the books. They did do a pretty good job at casting with the exception of Annabeth (I personally call her Clarissabeth since she’s more like Clarisse than Annabeth.) She just acted nothing like Annabeth, and she looked nothing like her too, I’m sorry but you can at least get one of those things right. I just wish that they would replace her for someone more like Annabeth. I hope that they’ll do this movie justice, or at least make it better than the last one. I’m looking forward to seeing Tyson though! I am interested in seeing how they will fill in the blanks from the last movie. Let’s hope that they get this movie right! :D

    • in the deleted scenes in the movie they mention thalia, buy the movie!

    • What I hope is that they make the second movie COMPLETELY different from the first and more like the books so that they can make the rest of the books in the series into movies too. Fingers crossed!!!

  23. I just LOVE how Persephone was there during the summer!

  24. i LOVED the book the movie was different from the book but it was good i mean face we thought it would be completly mindblowing awesome because the book was but the movie wasn`t i mean sure there were parts that should have been better but what eva it was still good i`ve been waiting for this for 2 years

  25. The first movie made me want to cry and sit in a sock drawer for a week, eating nothing but Thin Mints. This movie I have a *little* more hope for, after seeing some pics. They’re dying Annabeth’s hair to blonde and making her eyes grey!!! Hooray!! As for the rest, I am…. CAUTIOUSLY optimistic. Please don’t crush my hopes again, Hollywood.

  26. well… personally i read all the percy jackson series and i love them. but when i watched the movie i got to say: i was dissapointed… i know its a movie but they just changed a lot from the book. i would’ve liked the movie to be more like the book… i know its hard but please if they could just stick with the book… and thank you Alexandra Daddario for making your hair blonde =D you make it more real =D

  29. I read the whole Percy Jackson series and I didn’t like how Percy was like 16 in the first movie when he was 12 in the book
