‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ Trailer: Wrath of the Pirate Titans

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief  was an enjoyable enough YA adventure film chained to an overly long title. Featuring a cast of young rising stars like Logan Lerman (Perks of Being a Wallflower), Brandon T. Jackson (Beverly Hills Cop 2013) and Alexandra Daddario (Texas Chainsaw 3D), the adaptation of Rick Riordan’s YA novel series laid down a solid foundation upon which to build the franchise.

With Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, we are thankfully getting a more manageable title – and from the looks of this trailer, a more ambitious attempt at epic adventure

Based on the second book in Riordan’s series, Sea of Monsters chronicles a story in which Percy must save “Camp Half-Blood,” the safe haven where demigod kids are protected from evil by magic barriers. Someone has poisoned the barriers, so it’s up to Percy and Co. to venture into “The Sea of Monsters” to find the mythical Golden Fleece to save the camp.

The exchange of director Chris Columbus (Harry Potter 1 & 2) for director Thor Freudenthal (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) is somewhat dubious – if only because Columbus has more experience with filmmaking on this scale than Freudenthal does. Still, the trailers looks like what you’d expect, given the first film, with some nice (if moderately budgeted) effects shots.

Sea of Monsters also features a nice supporting cast of fan-favorite actors like Nathan Fillion (FireflyCastle), Stanley Tucci (Captain America) and Anthony Head (Buffy) – along with Missi Pyle (The Artist), Leven Rambin (Wizards of Waverly Place) and Yvette Nicole Brown (Community).

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters will be in theaters on August 16, 2013.

  1. video not available in you’re location =(

    • Same here. Same story with pretty much 95% of every sketch from SNL. (sigh)

  2. WOW this one looks like it will follow the Book more closely Thank goodness the first film missed a lot

  3. Whoa… this one blindsided me completely. I didn’t know they were making a sequel. I really liked the first one. Never read the books, though.

    • Surprised me too. I didn’t read the books but I really enjoyed the first movie. It’s funny because I wondered last week what happened to the franchise. I’m looking forward to this one.

    • My advice is to NEVER read the books because it will dissapoint you!

  4. Never read the books either. That way I won’t be disappointed. It looks awesome though.

  5. I read the books, and I was so extremely disappointed with the first movie that I swore I would not go to see this movie in theaters. Funny thing was, that even though I saw the movie, then read the book, I still thought the first movie was just okay.

The trailer does look really impressive, and I love Logan Lerman, Stanley Tucci, and Nathan Filion. However, I’m still upset at the changes to the ages and how different the characters are from their book counterparts, that I’m gonna stick by what I said about not going to the theaters to watch this movie. I’m willing to wait a year for it to come on HBO or Showtime, or borrow it from a friend it they like it enough to buy it on home video.

  6. Sorry, video isn’t available in your location.

  7. Meh. While this does look like it follows the book closer, I feel like this trailer was really underwhelming.

  8. not a good trailer, or maybe there are no great scenes in the movie, but I’m not pumped to see this

  9. Actually looks pretty solid

  10. Logan Lerman, my sweet Jewish prince, is back.

  11. I’m excited for this I loved the first one! Plus Logan lerman is pretty solid and so Is daddario.

  12. Still doesn’t seem to really follow the book though, since, no spoilers, the movie seems to skip over a major point from the book based on this trailer.

  13. I am thoroughly disappointed, the first movie was horrible compared to the book because they changed so much stuff, especially the ending. The fact that they are making a sequel many years later when viewers may have lost interest and hace swapped the directors for some one less experienced just screams out ‘horrendous movie’ to me. Whats even worse is that they’re creating a sequel even though they way they ended the first movie did not lay the foundation for future movies (which was their ending, remember they altered it from the one in the book) and i will even go so far as to say set the stage to prevent future movies from being made. I firmly believe this movie will fail as bad as the first, if not worse. Box office? Might rake in some cash, but not enough to green light anoter film adaption of the books (IMO) and i dont think this will be very well critically recieved. The books were great and enjoyable, the movie(s)? Cant say the same, sorry but not sorry. End Rant

  14. I will see this because of Nathan Fillion. Was he in the 1st movie? Never saw it. The taxi that splits in two seemed very reminiscent of the Knight’s Bus in HP3.

  15. Looks cool, I thought the first one was good. Then again I have not read the books, so I had nothing to compare it to.

  17. Well,I guess fanboys can rejoice for Nathan Fillion’s appearance.

Anyway,it looks like it could be a cool movie.

  18. Will give the trailer a look when I get on my laptop, but I noticed the movie on upcoming release and I am hoping it will be awesome.

  19. Downright horrible. Read the book. First movie sucked. This one offers nothing. There’s nothing to look forward to. And I’m extremely disappointed. :/ Gosh, why can’t they make things right?

  20. Looks like a great popcorn flick, my kind of movie

  21. I’ve read every single books and I want to read the new series. I saw the first movie and was so disappointed. So many things and characters weren’t introduced. And Annabeth’s character threw me off. This one seems like it will actually STICK to the books A LOT more. I will see it!

  22. Whether you read the book or not prior to watching the movie, I can honestly say I hated the first one and probably not looking forward to the next. Loads of tweens are definitely in for this though so it will rake some money

  23. I read the book before I saw the first movie. So, in other words, I just couldn’t bring myself to enjoy it. The only 2 things I thought they did well were casting Logan Lerman as Percy and the Lotus Hotel scene. Other than that, I was not pleased at all.

This, however, has sparked my interest. Seems to be back on the right course. Also looks like they’re fixing some major things that were supposed to be key in the first story.

  24. Looks good.

  25. Put The Rock there as Atlas for the third movie and we would see what happens…

  26. Dang! I waited for this 2nd movie because the adaptation of the 1st movie is a major turn off. I hope they do adapt this time from the “storyline of the book” :)

  27. wow, they actually seem to be following the books with this one…. did not expect that (my expectations these days are very low) think I’ll give it a shot then.

  28. Its like Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire meets Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets…

  29. While I was unimpressed with the first movie because it fell short of my expectations, I am willing to give this one a shot to do the books justice. Sea of Monsters is my favorite book in the series, and the movie better not mess up the story to much.

I am not a person who wants everything from the books in the movies, but I was really hoping for a closer following along in lightning thief. It seemed farther away from the book than I am willing to be happy with. This one seems to get the story back on track with the books. I’m probably going to go watch it :)
