For years, Showtime has been perceived as the secondary competitor to rival HBO. However, while the network’s shows may not have quite the widespread cultural impact as HBO hits like Game of Thrones and The Sopranos, Showtime continues to be a haven for acclaimed original programming.

Series like Dexter and Weeds are among the network’s most heralded offerings in the 21st century, and ongoing television programs like Homeland and Masters of Sex are keeping that tradition alive. Now Showtime has renewed another of its hit dramas for an additional season.

Showtime has officially announced that Penny Dreadful will be returning for a third season, set to debut in 2016. The series – which stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton, among others – will begin shooting its next nine episodes in Dublin, later this year.

Thus far, the show has introduced a number of iconic horror characters from British literature, including books like The Picture of Dorian Grey, Dracula and Frankenstein. There’s no indication just yet how that cast will expand in the next season.

Over time, Penny Dreadful has developed a loyal fanbase, and with its expansive scope and geek-friendly subject matter, there’s no reason to think that the show’s appeal cannot continue to grow for years to come. After all, the series is really the only supernatural drama Showtime currently has on the air. Considering just how big a following such subject matter has, the network is wise to foster the show’s continued development, especially as its imagination and storytelling remains at the top of its game.

Created by Oscar-nominated writer John Logan (Gladiator), Penny Dreadful seems like a show that is still hitting its creative stride and will likely become a favorite for viewers looking for something fresh to and lively. Plus, with the recent launch of the network’s Showtime Anytime streaming service, subscribers will have the chance to get caught up with the show as it continues to evolve.
