James Gunn says he wants to make more seasons of Peacemaker. The upcoming HBO Max series stars John Cena as his popular ultra-patriotic and ultra-violent vigilante character from The Suicide Squad.

Cena’s Peacemaker of course seemed to die a horrific death in Gunn’s 2021 Suicide Squad follow-up, getting taken down by Idris Elba’s Bloodsport and then squashed by a falling building. But the character was just too popular to leave dead and now he gets a streaming showcase, with Cena back in the lead role and Gunn taking on directorial duties for several of the episodes. Storywise, Peacemaker season 1 promises to explore the origins of Cena’s character while also detailing his post-The Suicide Squad missions. Besides Cena the cast also includes returning Suicide Squad sequel stars Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee, alongside new cast members Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Freddie Stroma and Chukwudi Iwuji.

It obviously remains to be seen how Peacemaker season 1 will be received by DCEU devotees and Gunn fans alike, and whether the show will be picked up for more seasons by HBO Max. For his part, Gunn says he wants to go on making more Peacemaker as he enjoys working with the cast. Speaking exclusively to Screen Rant, Gunn said:

We have 87 seasons mapped out (laughs). Yeah, we're gonna be doing this until John [Cena] and I are 150 years old. But yeah, no we all want to continue. We really want to continue. It was the greatest group of people. Obviously, I was already friends with John and Jenn [Holland], obviously, and Steve Agee. But, Danielle [Brooks] and Chuk [Iwuji] —  [Chuk] is one of my best friends. Chuk is one of the primary characters now in Guardians 3, and he is murdering it on this movie. So, it was just, really, a great group of people and I can't wait to work with them again.

John Cena as Peacemaker in HBO show

If early reviews are any indication then Gunn should definitely get the go-ahead from HBO Max to make at least one more season of Peacemaker if not 87. Most of these positive reviewers have naturally zeroed in on the show’s humor, which bears the familiar Gunn stamp, meaning it’s very irreverent and sometimes peppered with raunchiness. And of course amid all the humor there’s also some heartfelt character study, another Gunn trademark. Naturally the show also features a prominent non-human character, Eagly the Eagle, who follows in the footsteps of great CGI Gunn creations like Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Weasel.

The big question with Cena’s Peacemaker of course is whether the character is actually strong enough to sustain multiple seasons. The character did come across somewhat one-note in The Suicide Squad, and some fans may even have been glad to see Deadshot finally shut him up. But obviously a series affords much more opportunity for character development and it seems Gunn and Cena have made a concerted effort to flesh out Peacemaker enough that he doesn’t wear out his welcome. Fans can judge for themselves whether all these efforts were worth it when the first three episodes of Peacemaker, all directed by Gunn himself, hit HBO Max on January 13, 2022 with more to follow on a weekly basis.
