Ultimately I think it borrows a little too liberally from the likes of Alien, Tarkovsky’s Solaris, The Black Hole, Lifeforce, The Shining and Hellraiser, to name but a few. If I remember rightly there’s even Pinhead’s word-for-word line “We have such sights to show you.” Not to mention that classic SF crime of assuming the audience are muppets: during the scene where Sam Neill’s explaining the ship’s space-folding drive system, there’s the standard “In ENGLISH please…” response, as if the crew are composed entirely of idiots rather than qualified astronauts with at least some rudimentary understanding of physics.

That said, the cast and production design are great, and I even went out and bought the Orbital/Michael Kamen soundtrack. Can’t imagine I’ll be doing the same with Castlevania.
