Paranormal Activity 3:  The Unanswered Questions

Here’s the entire Paranormal Activity movie trilogy summarized in chronological order, with the connections between the films pointed out. It should go without saying that THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS IN THROUGHOUT THIS ARTICLE.

How does Paranormal Activity 3 tie into the other films?

Paranormal Activity 3 is set in 1988 when sisters Kristi and Katie are young (5 and 9, respectively). It is meant to chronicle the events that the girls cannot fully remember in the first two films – namely the demonic entity first coming to haunt them. The girls’ mom has a boyfriend, Dennis, who begins to film the phenomenon happening in their home. The mom, Julie, has decided not to have any more kids – much to the chagrin of her mother (the girls’ grandmother), Lois. A mysterious symbol drawn on a crawl space ceiling in the girls’ room leads Dennis to a book about a coven of witches in the 1930s who served demons by brain-washing girls of child-bearing age into having sons for the demon to collect, before wiping away the child-bearer’s memory of the event. Dennis tries to show this explanation to Julie, but she will not buy it.

The demon makes a bond with Kristi, in particular (which she refers to as her friend “Toby”). After repeated attacks, Kristi eventually promises to do the demon’s bidding in order to save her sister from harm. Kristi begs her mom to take them from the house to grandma’s house (apparently, the demon’s request), but Julie, still in denial, refuses. For “motivation,” the demon then tears apart the kitchen in front of Julie, which sends her running off to grandma’s house with the kids. Thinking they are finally safe, Julie awakens in the night to the sound of cars pulling up to Lois’ home. It is then revealed that Lois is part of the coven of witches from the ’30s that Dennis saw in the book, and that she serves the demon terrorizing them (she had the same symbol hidden on her wall that the demon drew on the crawl space ceiling). Gathered with the rest of her coven, Lois watches as the demon kills Julie and Dennis. She then leads her granddaughters up the stairs to an unknown fate, with the demon in tow.

Paranormal Activity 2 Kristi and Katie Paranormal Activity 3 Ending Explained

Paranormal Activity 1 & 2

Jump to 2005, when an adult Katie delivers stuff from Lois’ old house (Lois has seemingly died) to a pregnant Kristi and her husband Dan. This includes a necklace and a box of old video tapes (Dennis’s 1988 tapes AND a set of tapes labeled “1992″).  A year later, after Kristi has given birth to her son, Hunter,  a “burglary” occurs at her home. Every room is completely trashed except for Hunter’s bedroom, but the only things stolen are the necklace and the video tapes. Soon after, strange paranormal events begin to occur in Kristi and Dan’s home. Their housekeeper Martine claims it is an evil spirit, tries to protect the family via prayer and incense – and gets fired for her trouble by Dan, who will not even begin to entertain thoughts of the supernatural being real in any form. Upon visiting, Katie and Kristi reminisce about that mysterious period from their childhood (which they cannot recall) that led to their family being broken, and their childhood home burning down. The events happening in Kristi’s home seem vaguely similar to deep-seated feelings the girls have of that childhood trauma; Katie is worried Kristi will ‘end up like their mother.’

Kristi’s step-daughter Ali begins to research demonic mythology, and discovers that humans could make deals with demons for wealth and power, in exchange for the soul of their first-born sons (a deal seemingly made by Lois and her coven, or Lois’ mother – possibly the founder of the coven). If the deal maker didn’t have a son, the demon would haunt the deal maker’s family until a male heir could be collected. Kristi’s infant son Hunter is revealed as the first male heir to be born into their family since the 1930s (Lois had hoped Julie would break that cycle, and encouraged her to have more children – but no such luck).

Paranormal Activity 2 Dragging Scene Kristi Paranormal Activity 3 Ending Explained

The paranormal activity in Kristi’s home begins to escalate; at one point, Kristi herself is dragged down into the basement by the demon and is kept there for hours. When Kristi is released, her family finds the basement door covered in scratches, with the word “Meus” (Latin for “Mine”) scratched in the door (either meaning Kristi or Hunter or both belong to the demon). Ali becomes convinced that Kristi has been corrupted by the demon and convinces her father of this by showing him footage of Kristi being dragged into the basement by some invisible force. Dan calls in Martine (the nanny he previously fired), who informs him that he cannot exorcise the demon completely – but he can pass the demon off to another family member. To protect his own family he decides to sacrifice Kristi’s sister, Katie. After a frightful confrontation with a possessed Kristi, Dan, Ali and Martine succeed in their plan and free her from the demon using a cross. Dan burns a photo of a young Katie (that Julie took on the girls’ first day of school) to complete the ritual (this seems to be the same photo that a few weeks later shows up in the attic of Katie and Micah’s home). Afterwards, Kristi has no memory of being possessed.

Katie, meanwhile, has just moved into a new home with her boyfriend Micah. When strange paranormal activity begins to occur in their home, Katie confesses to Micah about the strange events from her and Kristi’s childhood - events which repeated when Katie was a teenager (age 13) and now and again throughout her adult life (a time we still haven’t seen in the films). She says that it’s felt like she’s always been haunted by something, though Micah is skeptical. Nevertheless, Micah begins to record the happenings and Katie eventually hires a psychic to assess the situation. The psychic (who states his expertise is not in demons, but in ghosts) reveals that the demon feeds off of negative energy; emotional friction between Katie and Micah is only strengthening it. Events escalate as Katie finds the photo of herself that Dan burned (she thought it lost in the house fire from her childhood) and starts to show signs of being possessed by the entity. Katie visits Kristi (3 weeks after Dan sent the demon her way) and explains the strange events occurring in her home. Dan reveals nothing about what happened to Kristi.

As more and more havoc is wrought, Katie and Micah try to reach out to a demonologist – but he is out of town. Frightened, they meet again with the psychic, who is instantly panicked by the malevolent presence in the house and flees the scene. When Katie is eventually physically assaulted by the demon, she and Micah decide they will flee to a hotel. Before they can leave, however, Micah discovers Katie gripping a cross (the one used to free Kristi) so tightly that her hand is bleeding. He burns the cross and the photo of Katie in anger, and an eerily tranquil Katie then informs him that all is well. Micah believes her, reluctantly.

The next night, Katie awakens in bed and watches over Micah sleeping before disappearing downstairs. Micah awakens to the sounds of Katie screaming as if being murdered/attacked and runs downstairs to aid her. Heavy footsteps are heard on the stairs, and then Micah’s corpse is flung at the camera, revealing a fully-demonic Katie as his murderer. The next night, demon-Katie appears at Kristi’s house and murders Dan and Kristi, before taking young Hunter into her arms and disappearing (Ali was not home at the time), with her whereabouts still unknown after three films.

  1. I think people’s dissapointment in these films shows how the general public has a need for “in your face” action and explanations in films, everything has to be obvious and graphic… There is something to be said for subtlety that encourages our own imaginations. Try watching a little Alfred Hitchcock to see what true suspense is. I think this series is a great representation of true “scary movies”, particularly in this era.

    • I think my disappointment in these films comes from the inconsistency of them; for instance, in the first Paranormal Micka makes a comment about Katie’s mother in reference to her still being alive. Yet in the thrid film the mother is killed by Toby in 1988.
Katie also tells Micka that she was the one haunted by Toby as a child, but it was Kristi who was mostly involved with him.
Lastly, it really bothers me that in the broken picture frame it’s not Katie!

Seriously though, I f****** love these films.

      • No. 1 – We don’t know that Julie was killed in PA3, she might just have been unconcious and severely injured. Or the “mom” is a stepmom that they lived with after they were placed in the care of their biological father. Or the “mom” is an entirely new family set up by Lois who subsequently mind-wipes K&K.

No. 2 – Katie was clearly haunted and affected by Toby, regardless of his affinity for Kristi.

No. 3 – Are you referring to the broken picture frame from PA1. That is most certainly Micah & Katie.

    • Oh and one more thought.. I never saw trailers until now, so I can understand some people’s dissapointment as something scenes are for sure more direct and in your face scares, but I still believe the reason I couldn’t sleep last night was more related to my imagination of the possible horror of the bathroom scene, etc

    • @melinda you are so right!!! Also can I get something off my chest re the adverts/youtube for the PA films and the stuff not in the films? Apart from f*cking with you and raising expectation of something about to happen, there’s no reason or actual LAW that states that everything in the trailers should be in the film. Traditionally a film is a journey from A-Z. What if the events in the trailers happened as well, but we just didn’t see them in the run of the normal films? They may not have had time to show them. The films are naturalistic too, they show us ‘reality’… maybe the trailers add to this: in other words we see other aspects of the life that is going on. It’s like if the cameras are rolling in one or two main rooms of a house, that doesn’t mean that there’s not stuff going on in the other rooms…

  4. I love This movie lol!

    • We’ve got the Pentagon’s top cryptologists working 24/7 trying to figure out what the f*ck you just said.

  5. i like the shows but there never scary to me i always look up bloody mary
videos on youtube and other scary videos and toby he is cool my friend tells me about the shows to so yeah what ever. oh this kid luis in my school he fell of a ramp hes weird and i sit next to him and he climed a fence and fell off i think theres something wrong with him!!!! O_O

    • Please elaborate on your incessant ramblings.

  6. this sucked. and the second one. stop

    • Meh. Go watch Hostel or something.

  7. I don’t know how much of this is just reaching to try and fill what are just gaping plot holes. It seems more than likely to me that the mentions of the mother in the second film are just…forgotten by the third.

I’ve watched all three of these films and I just don’t get them at all. No, I GET THEM, as in, I can understand the plot, I just don’t understand what about them is so scary and why people act as if they are. I feel as if this guy had one good gimmick and people have taken that and run with it. Had it JUST been a ghost? Sure, terrifying. The whole ‘mythology’ with witches and that crap? Just for the love of god, all ghost stories are better with out an explanation and forcing one on to this, with WITCHES? OLD, EVIL WITCHES? Really? Just…gah.

    • As been posted several times, we don’t know that Julie is dead. Also, the “mom” referenced in PA1 may be a stepmom or an entirely new family set up by Lois.

The reason you don’t find the movies scary is personal preference. There are many genres of horror and some prefer the seen over the unseen. I find the latter infinitely more terrifying.

  8. scary!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. whas julie possessed when she was floating up on the stair case or was she murdered?? im very confused with the part were dennis dies!! please someone tell me how did julie die!!

    • It is not known if Julie lived or died yet so we’ll have to wait for PA4.

    • Julie died, she was like.. hanging at the top of the stairs and then her dead body got thrown down onto Dennis.

      • Maybe. Her unconscious/injured body could have been thrown down the stairs at Dennis. Again, maybe PA4 will tell us if the “mother” referenced in PA1 is Julie or a stepmom or some fake foster family.

  10. I love these films. I ignored the adverts and saw them on a friend’s computer, so not even a DVD case was nearby to ruin them!

OK, I was wading thru comments, sorry if I missed this but ere is my question: the only odd thing is the abduction of the boy, at the end of part two. At what stage on the timeline did this happen in part one, after M’s death?

I would’ve thought that the boy was the entity’s main focus!

(@pSyc0SiL0SiBiN you have a big mouth)

    • After Katie killed Micah she went over to her sisters house and killed everyone but the daughter and abducted the boy ,that’s why u see her leave the room in part one that’s when she is going to the other house

    • After Katie killed Micah she went over to her sisters house and killed everyone but the daughter and abducted the boy.

  11. okay julie was already murdered by the demon toby when she was floating lois the witch leader and the mother of julie was letting the corpse of julie float and that attracted dennis and than she actually throwed julie her corpse with force on dennis so dennis might die but he didnt he just fell hard so lois waited off to see what toby where gonna do but then kristy came looking for the mother julie but she was dead…. dennis took kristy in the closet to hide for the witches he saw coming in and of course for the thing he does not know which killed julie so outside the closet seemly toby get into katie her body and acted like crying at the stairs after that dennis came out to look for katie and get the hell out there with katie and kristy so he saw appearly katie he walked to her but katie was of course posessed by toby and toby like blowed dennis away dennis did not hold the camera any more he tried to get up so lois came and was about to finish dennis off on that moment dennis seem to get everything he was able now to get up but lois did with some kind of witchforce him down and broke his bones after that dennis died and kristy had no other choice to follow lois to get ready for the ceremonie with katie to tell check if one of the girls will get a son to offer to the demon toby but there was another rule because katie made jokes about ghosts and play ghost games toby got mad and he wanted to let katie feel they are real and scary kristy did not want that and because of that kristy had to be the possesion of toby also like the coming up baby hunter what will be the possesion to of toby thats why she weared a wedding dress because she is gonna marry also on the ceremonie with toby thats why toby sticks with katie around in part 1 and 2 so it seems toby looks like also some kind of male witch and he keeps showing the witch coven sign the triangle with the circle in it at all the end katie keeps living and ali the rest died and hunter is offerd to toby a part 4 is coming of paranormal activity the special edition paranormal activity 2 tokyo night is lose of the story of part 1 2 and 3

    • Julie may not be dead. She may have just been unconscious and severely injured.

Lois did nothing to Dennis, Toby did.

Toby is a demon, not a witch.

Toby only came to Katie in PA1 after Kristi’s husband transferred him to her in PA2.

    • Punctuation isn’t a bad thing.

  12. IT is really stupid of them cuz paranormal acivity 3 shut be part 1 cuz its the childhood of them then part 2 comes and u see them growed up but still meddled with the demon and with the witches their contract then part 3 comes that is part 2 really and u see what happens to the growed up katie and kristy and hunter and their friends and stuff so u did the order wrong directors of the movie sequal thumbs if ur right with me

    • You should really refrain from posting any comments. And quit making up words.

    • Shut the f*** up, They didnt get anything wrong, thats the point of the movies. If your little brain cant figure all this out thats your fault

  13. the coven uses a symbol with a triangle and a circle inside, that is usually representative of the magical forces required for physical transformation, spiritual illumination and immortality. so that is probably their goal.

  14. the coven uses a symbol with a triangle and a circle inside, that is usually representative of the magical forces in alchemy required for physical transformation, spiritual illumination and immortality. so that is probably their goal.

  15. In PA3 we get the impression that a video is being played (otherwise no film), it’s obviously from the box of videos that’s been stolen. Anyone care to suggest ‘who’ is watching the video, and why they would do that? Sorta creepy.

    • Maybe it’s Ali from the second one? Trying to figure out what happened? PA5? Lol

  16. I’m 12 and it didn’t scare me!!!!

    • I know I’ll sleep better with this awesome piece of intel…

  17. There is a teaser/easter egg of the house burning down in PA3. I was watching it on DVR, and at the end where the camera goes static there was a brief flash of something about halfway through before it cut to black. So I went back and watched it frame by frame and paused it, and it shows flames in the middle of the room, showing the house was catching on fire.

  18. Hey I had hear rumours of this snapshot and couldn’t believe it when I saw it, it’s freaky too as the final scene in PA3 is in the witch’s house, so this implies that the fire is happening back at Julie & Dennis’s place, maybe?

    • From the majority of posts, I would say the consensus is that the fire in the video is Dennis & Julie’s house.

  19. Why the throat slashing scene in the theatrical version when we now know that Katie abducts Hunter at the end of PA2? What version relates to the next instalment? What are we to believe actually happened?

  20. Why the throat slashing scene in the alternate version when we now know that Katie abducts Hunter at the end of PA2? What version relates to the next instalment? What are we to believe actually happened?

    • @colin I always thought that the throat thing was a little sensationalist/short term (maybe in case the films as an ongoing thing didn’t take off, then they simply had one ‘scary film’ right there. Remember another series… but that never happened after the first one: Golden Compass/Northern Lights??)

She was just an automaton though: for the demon, and for some other plan. Throat cut/shot the will continues.

  21. Why the throat slashing scene in the alternate version when we now know that Katie abducts Hunter at the end of PA1 What version relates to the next instalment? What are we to believe actually happened?

  22. Why the throat slashing scene in the theatrical version when we now know that Katie abducts Hunter at the end of PA1 What version relates to the next instalment? What are we to believe actually happened?

  23. Why the throat slashing scene in the theatrical version when we now know that Katie abducts Hunter at the end of PA2 What version relates to the next instalment? What are we to believe actually happened?

  24. Why the throat slashing scene in the theatrical version of PA1when we now know that Katie abducts Hunter at the end of PA2 What version relates to the next instalment? What are we to believe actually happened?

    • Your theatrical version was only seen in a few parts of the country. Most of the country saw the version where Katie throws Micah’s body at the camera, then attacks the camera. The only version of PA1 that could continue on with a story would have to be that one. The story would stop if the throat-slashing version and the cops-shooting Katie version were used.

  25. I understand why people are upset about scenes in trailers being left out of the movie, but it’s not like these are the only movies that do this. It happens all the time.
Just think of the trailer as an extension of the movie, a little extra to get you hyped. Because that’s actually what a trailer is.

I actually like that there are different scenes in the trailers because that’s one less scene that I’m familiar with by the time I’m in the theater.

  26. I’ve only seen number three, and I was extremely confused.
By the looks of it, the movies go from 3, 1, 2, and then the new one coming which is 4, right?

    • Tip #1 – go see the movies in order

  27. with the ‘trailer’ scenes, i have full films with the scenes in, all depends what version you get and from what i have found, they never point out which version untill watched. to date i have 3 versions of pa1, 2 versions of both pa2 and pa3. also, when they made pa1, it had no plans for other films untill the responce from viewers made them write more stories/films. im sure after the pa2 they have planned more films to match stories better

  28. So did katie and kristi really exist like did all those things really happen or was all that fake like are those actors or were they real videos and tapes found by someone ?? Because young katie looks alot like older katie and so does young kristi to older kristi ?? Kind of weird and now on the trailers little hunter looks kike the older version of hunter

  29. So did katie and kristi really exist like did all those things really happen or was all that fake like are those actors or were they real videos and tapes found by someone ?? Because young katie looks alot like older katie and so does young kristi to older kristi ?? Kind of weird and now on the trailers little hunter looks like the older version of hunter … I dont know is that true or all just pure make believe and is just a good horror movie ????

    • You’re kidding right? Please tell me this is a joke.
