From its relatively simple beginnings as a movie about a young couple who decide to film the things that go bump in the night, the Paranormal Activity series has built up a fairly elaborate mythos around this basic central conceit. As of the most recent film, Paranormal Activity 4, the ongoing plot now includes demonic symbols, complex child abduction plots, ritual sacrifice and witch coven conspiracies. It’s all a very long way from a door opening by a few inches in the night.

Given how cheap the Paranormal Activity movies are to produce, and their relative popularity, it seems like the ghostly train won’t be stopping any time soon, unless one of the sequels manages to gross less than even the few million that constitutes the budget for it. A desire to capitalize on this profitability may be the reason why there are currently two Paranormal Activity movies in production: direct sequel Paranormal Activity 5 and Latino spin-off Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.

Paramount Pictures revealed the spin-off’s subtitle this week, and also confirmed release dates for both films. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones will start the year off on January 3, 2014, while Paranormal Activity 5 will be released in good time for for Halloween on October 24, 2014. Little is known about the plot of either of these, except that Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones will be about a Catholic inquiry into a suspected demonic possession, and that it may take place in a parallel universe relative to the films in the main series. Both movies have been pushed back by about a year or so from their original planned 2013 release dates.

For fans of the Paranormal Activity series, the news of two movies in one year will no doubt be cause for delight, but it’s difficult not to question the mileage of this concept. Paranormal Activity 4┬ástarted to feel a bit strained when the directors resorted to “jump scares” such as a cat suddenly pouncing in front of the camera, and many of the loud bangs and thumps are starting to feel like they’re designed purely to get a good audience reaction shot to use in the marketing, rather than because it makes for a genuinely scary film.

Because of this, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is probably the more interesting of the two releases, since it will apparently break away from the ongoing narrative of the other films and start a new story afresh, hopefully with an entirely new creative team behind it.

Will you be in the theater for one of these Paranormal Activity movies, neither of them, or both?

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is out on wide release from January 3, 2014.

Paranormal Activity 5 will be in theaters on October 24, 2014.

  1. no more…….

  2. Make it stop! Paranormal Activity is the Reality TV of cinema: dirt cheap to produce, not very good, and people flock to see it like it’s the second (third, fourth, fifth, sixth… ) coming of Jesus.

  3. Moving the spin-off to January is not a good sign.
January – February is well known as a dumping ground so the logical thought would be that even though these movies are made for peanuts the studio isn’t confident in what they have.

    • January has proven an excellent marking for horror; Devil Inside, Texas Chainsaw, Mama etc. All horror films which released to HUGE opening numbers. 2013 has already been an insanely successful year for horror, 2014 is off to a kick ass start.

  4. Kill it with fire!!!!

  5. How are they doing it? Maybe its black magic? They’re shooting movie for almost nothing and gain enourmous profit AND they don’t give us horror. Incredible!

    • I know, right? What the hell makes people keep coming back when literally nothing happens for a majority of each movie?

The fourth movie was just one long Youtube video featuring annoying teens Skyping with each other and some Microsoft product placement.

      • I wish there was a studio out there who’d develop decent to good movies with at least one or two big names and put them out on the exact same day as these movies. Paranormal, Grown ups, Scary Movie… it’d be hilarious, I wonder what the outcome would be.

        • Probably have a bunch of hicks walking around in circles talking gibberish until they decide which of them to waste their 20 bucks on.

  6. Know what surprises me?

The Latino based demonic spinoff being talked about here but finding out that there’s a REC 4 via a non-movie website.

    I’d rather watch that movie.

  7. Really liked the first Parnormal, even if I was so spooked I never revisited it aha. But they should really stop churning these movies out, Paranormal 4 was terrible. It got to a point where it wasn’t even a horror and not even a movie, I felt like I was spying on a family for nothing.

  8. Should have stop after the first one.

    • Sounds like 95% of horror franchises.

  9. I really wish they’d do a sequel that involves the escaped teenager from PA2 finding old ritual reels from the grandmother. That would be so cool!!!!

  10. I Say bring it on! Being that these movies are so cheap to make it’s highly unlikely that any money will be lost on production’s side. Yeah PA4 sucked but that doesn’t change how I feel about the other three. People say that it ruined the franchise but if you feel that way then stop watching any new sequels. Just pretend it ended after PA3, or 2, or 1 (Whichever was the last one you liked).

  11. Just saw the trailer to the marked ones looks awsome witth young katie and kristi and ali from number 2 in it soooo going to see it and they should carrie it on not many movies that make you think or wonder what happens next make it to a sEqual so let it have its time beforte it ends

  13. Am I the only one who actually likes the movies. Well, at least the first movie and the marked ones. Looking forward to the next movie.
