Paranormal Activity 4 Post Credits Scene Spinoff Paranormal Activity 5 Confirmed for Halloween 2013; Latino Spinoff Next Spring

Audiences are growing increasingly tired of the Paranormal Activity series’ cheap trickery and minimalist scare tactics, as evidenced by the fourth installment’s weak critical reception (read our review) and opening weekend drop-off from both the second and third film. Nonetheless, the film’s $30 million opening take on a $5 million budget is good business, so it comes as no surprise to learn that Paramount is moving ahead with Paranormal Activity 5.

Moreover, the now-confirmed Latino spinoff (which is teased during the end credits of PA4) will be arriving on the scene first, next year. Scroll on down for more about both found-footage/horror projects.

Paramount is planning to release Paranormal Activity 5 in October next year (most likely the 25th, as Halloween falls on a Thursday). Deadline is reporting that the film will “advance the story,” but their report gives no indication as to who demonic Toby will be terrorizing (or possessing) this time. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman directed the last two installments – working from a script penned by Christopher Landon – so there’s a reasonable chance Paramount will stick to its guns and bring the former pair back to helm PA 5.

Meanwhile, Landon is going to be directing the PA Latino spinoff (working from his own script, presumably). The film will emulate its predecessors by featuring a no-name cast, but also one composed primarily of Latino actors speaking Spanish for a healthy chunk of the running time. Landon is essentially being rewarded for his lucrative work at Paramount (he penned the spec script for Disturbia and the last three PA movies), with the spinoff serving as his sophomore feature directorial effort after the lesser-known comedy/thriller Burning Palms.

This untitled Latino spinoff has to overcome dwindling enthusiasm for not just the Paranormal Activity franchise, but also mixing supernatural horror elements with pseudo-realism of the found-footage format; on top of that, The Devil Inside and [REC] franchises previously explored Latin-Catholic mythology and horror through a found-footage lens. Landon therefore has to retread their tracks in a creative fashion (since dropping any sort of religious overtones goes against the idea of a Latino spinoff in the first place), while also finding a way to rejuvenate interest in a property that has grown increasingly reliant on gimmickry and spooky set pieces Рto accommodate a convoluted, yet ironically-easy-to-compress, mythos.

Paramount plans to launch the Latino-spinoff next spring, when the competition is lighter and moviegoers are more willing to take a chance on a familiar ‘product’ (here, a side-quel to a drawn-out horror franchise). Still, Landon has his work cut out for him, with respect to silencing the belligerent masses (or haters, whichever you prefer) who feel the Paranormal Activity series should have been put out to pasture by now; their numbers only seem to be growing with each new chapter.

  1. If Paramount was smart they would end the franchise at 5. Because at this rate it won’t last much past 5 anyway. But Paramount is not smart so the franchise won’t end until 6 or 7.

    • or 300 like the Nightmare, Chuckie, and Jason movies. -.-

    • Paramount is smart, they make a million dollar movie, rake in 30 million opening weekend. Repeat until money dries up.

      • Paramount is stupid. The budgets keep raising on these movies every year and so do the cost to advertise them. And now the box office is numbers are starting to fall. If they were truly smart they would make one final movie and end it once and for all.

But then again this is the same company that kept releasing Friday the 13th movies year after year back in the 80s until after 9 years in a row the fans got tired of it.

        • Actually the numbers aren’t falling. Each one is doing very very well. I hope they keep making them past number 5.

        • I also never got tired of Friday the 13th movies. I bought them all and also bought allthe Paranormal Activity films.

    • I hope they keep going past 5. I have loved every film. They keeps getting better then the one before it. I will be happy if they keep going way past 5. Awesome films.

  2. Are some answers confirmed? are things going to be tied together to finally to build a respectable lore? if not I am not seeing it.

  3. Paranormal activity needs to just roll over and die! It’s gotten extremely retarded over the years and now a fith one. F*** that!

  4. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. if they keep making them for only 5 million per film. they can probably go until about PA 10 before the returns dwindle to nothing.

  6. Hopefully this one is called pa5: the lost tapes. And closes and answers everything. But I’ll see it. I’m excited.

  7. I havent watched pa4, god I hope that blue pic of that girl you guys posted isnt a spoiler.

    • It is if you haven’t seen 2.

    • No, it’s not a spoiler. It’s from “Paranormal Activity 4″ and you should see it. It’s a little short and confusing but it wasn’t that terrible. The ending was pretty crazy but a little dumb to me at the same time…

  8. *Yawning* This is getting old fast. Come on Paramount, first Michael Bay comes back, now this? -_-ZZZZZZ

  9. Didn’t watch 3, heard 4 wasn’t closing the story, so didn’t watch that either.

A fifth one? Bet it ends on a “shocking, unexpected note”- read: yet ANOTHER weak cliffhanger. Snooze…

  10. i have actually never seen one of these. after the first came out and all the buzz died down people said how it was actually pretty slow and not that scary so i figured i would wait and watch it if i had the chance but otherwise wouldnt worry about it to much.

  11. I like how these movies give the common person an idea of
what hauntings and possesion can be like but I like movies
that actually tell about true paranormal events. The more real,
    the more scary.

    • Most of the paranormal activity movies are stupid but i just can not help my self i find my self watching them anyway

    • There are no real paranormal events.

  12. They could have ended the series with the 4th movie. But no, it ended with another cliffhanger. I liked it though. So please, end the series with the fifth movie…and make it good!

  13. I don’t know why everyone hates on these films, I actually enjoy them and think they’re pretty scary. If you’re one of those people that has to constantly point out the negative aspects of a movie then of course you won’t think it’s scary. It’s just sooo much better than all the typical/predictable scary movies these days.

  14. Man…dis is gettin boring…i thought it wud end at PA4…but its gettin lame with demon possessing thing…i was hoping after all the losses of families smthin gud will happen and sm divine vs evil all out war take place…but seems lyk dey r draggin dis thing…

  15. I truly hope that you (Paramount)…come with a good ending instead of her cracking necks & shoving people in a upward position and they go flying into the wall..I like watching them but I really want to see something good with her and her homegirls getting there ass whipped instead of her wiping out 3 no 4! Families…
    Give us something good! :)

  16. Kaap Paranormal Activity coming!! I love these films.

  17. Please tell me what’s going to hppen in the next movie!!!matt shively was in the first

  18. I think 5 is adding a cool fresh look to the series. It finally is putting in some hot attractive ladies which no one ever gets tire of looking at. I know I will buy 5 when it is released and I will definitely check out 6 to see who is staring in it. Its entertainment not sciene or work. Enjoy it and stop complaining. !!!!!

  19. You are so awesome! I don’t suppose I’ve
truly read something like that before. So wonderful to discover someone with unique thoughts
