‘Paranormal Activity 2′ Trailer as Mysterious as the First

Paranormal Activity 2 title Paranormal Activity 2 Trailer as Mysterious as the First

The first trailer for Paranormal Activity 2 has been released and it emulates all the suspense of the first movie by showing next to nothing and raising questions.

The minimalist focus of the trailer is exactly what works for it. But when you extend this quiet suspense to 90 minutes (especially after it’s been done once already), the gag can wear off quite fast. It will be interesting to see how the minds behind the sequel keep audiences on their toes – since the gimmick/surprise of the original shouldn’t work again. If it becomes just about the money, we may have a new Saw franchise on our hands.

Paranormal Activity was the micro-budget sensation that turned a $15,000 project into a $193 million (worldwide) hit. Word of mouth spread rapidly through the Internet, leading to unprecedented buzz. A sequel was quickly greenlit and Tod Williams signed on to direct.

The new trailer presents a tone similar to the original film, but adds some new elements – multiple security cameras, a baby and a dog. I have to admit, I am genuinely worried about the safety of this dog. For some reason, the baby doesn’t create as much nervousness for me in this brief trailer as the dog does.

Then again, I have a dog and no babies. icon smile Paranormal Activity 2 Trailer as Mysterious as the First

Only a month ago we were wondering if the possessed Katie would return in the enigmatic sequel. The trailer suggests this might be correct. All we see is the silhouette of a woman, but her body resembles that of actress Katie Featherston.

No cast has been revealed in an attempt to maintain the veil of realism that made the original an international sensation. Obviously, it is all fabricated for entertainment, but the intentions are admirable.

UPDATE:

Well, well – the little viral nuggets are starting already… Screen Rant reader Jose noticed that at the end of the trailer there’s a reflection of the baby in the mirror, even though he’s not in the crib:

And then our fearless leader Vic noticed a message in the carpet, which I pointed out was a reflection in the mirror. Here’s the detail:

It’s a hand-scrawled message that states: “what is happening to hunter?” One would assume that Hunter is the name of the child.

  1. Notice how at the end of the trailer, when Katie is in the nursery, the baby is gone yet his reflection is in the mirror…
Looks promising, hopefully it won’t be the next Blair Witch 2, but I didn’t even know that they started shhooting, and its awesome how this trailer is presented in front of Eclipse, wonder how those Twilighters reactions are like.

    • Jose, nice catch. I found another one as well. Updated the post and gave you a shout out. :)

      Vic

      • Where did you find that “What’s happening to Hunter?” line in the trailer? At 3:53:54AM, the girl is standing in the doorway and there’s no writing in the mirror but the still is different. Unconfuse me.

        • I’m just as confused… the baby not being there is correct but the Hunter statement and missing women seems to be photoshoped.

          • What’s happening to hunter can only be seen on the end still of the website. Its not actually in the trailer but in the website endframe…..

    • The shooting began since last month..Read somewhere over the net

    • I’m pretty sure the first one was the next Blair Witch 2. The only thing to make this one better would be to never release it.

    • I’ve been a fan since the first, so I’ve been constantly returning to the paranormal activity 2 website. Well, today (july 27, 2010 I return for my daily routine. Something is different…again! We know about the scribbling reading Hunter, but if you return to the website today, it has been removed from the mirror. Im looking into as I write this…..

  2. What is on the lamp stand near the baby? It’s not their before the dog and baby disappears but it is after the babies reflection appears.

    • NICE catch man. Ive watched this trailer for nuances like that at least 10 times and i didnt once catch that. That is a good little twist there. And the time on the side confirms that when it came back to the room it was only a few seconds later. How the hell…

  3. Sorry for double posting but i couldn’t figure out why the room was so much brighter in the trailer after the girl appears, then i realized that the door had been opened and the unknown item i mentioned earlier had appeared.

  4. this looks great really enjoyed the first one.Tyler the thing next to the lamp looks like a teddy bear although once the girl appears it looks like the head of it dissappears might be just me though ave a look and see.couldnt see the writting on the floor is that the last bit of the trailer couldnt pause it in time to see tried about 20 times but couldnt catch it lol

  5. For some reason I can’t see the trailer. Doesn’t show up in my browser. UGH!

  6. Just watched it on Youtube. I’m intrigued. Loved the first movie. Hope this one is just as good.

  7. Well the reflection itself is “off”. Obviously it is not a true reflection as when you first view the scene based on the hamper at the end of the crib (which you can see in the reflection) would also give you part of the dog in the reflection. Bad angle or just bad editing?

The rocker moving yet dog still not in reflection.

I think (besides the obvious nods) this was put together poorly and fast.

  8. Paranormal Activity 2 is currently a Twitter trending topic with Paramount encouraging fans to ‘Tweet their Scream’ from the official site.

  9. I really enjoyed the first one. My wife forced me to watch it, however I’m really happy she did. This one looks very promising as well. Nothing like seeing a fat hairy man jump under the covers thinking that the thin blanket will protect him from the big bad movie ghost lol.

  10. what about the rocking chair in the mirror that startles the dog? anyone notice that yet?

    • yup my comment above mentions it as I believe it is in the main writing.

      • Haha, yes I laughed during the entire movie too. I don’t know maybe to us it just doesn’t seem realistic.

Phillys_Gr8test being “based” on a real event could mean many things. I can base a book on a murder but it’d be soley based on a murder and I could change it anyway I want. It’s the easiest way to make things scary, when they aren’t real.

        *Based on a true event

DrakeOfMan, after watching the movie, my girlfriend and 2 other friends had to spend the night beacuse they were so scared. If I attempted to leave the room to get water they wouldn’t let me in belief that I would try and scare them. They were right though haha.

If this did happen in real life, close + lock the door…
If the entity can make footsteps in powder then why not set up a bear trap? Or even a slippery substance to make it trip and fall down the stairs? Think people!

  11. Wow… Paranormal Activity wasn’t scary for me at all.

Am I the only one who thought the first was a ‘comedy’, I wasn’t scared at all… in fact I laughed all the way through, please don’t tell me I’m the only one?

    ~Drake

    • DrakeOfMan…. what are you talking about? The first was a true story in which a lot of people died (LMAO)! Sorry I had to post this.

        • I find it funny that you think it’s that simple. It’s not a human being, obviously. If it were that easy, don’t you think it would’ve been done by many people already? Seriously, “think”!.

  12. @ DrakeOfMan, you’re not the only one. I also found it to be boring, ridiculous, pointless, 2 of the most annoying characters, especially Katie, and not one scary scene for me. Oh, and let me not forget about the 2 horrible endings. Even my 11 year-old nephew was like, “WTH, that was so stupid”.

    • Knowing that it was fake I dont see how anyone can logically think the movie was scary. Sure if it was REAL, but knowing everything is fake? I just dont get it..

      • Aaron,

The first one was similar to Blair Witch in that to really get the effect you needed to watch it on opening weekend and before you’d really heard anything about it – enough to make you think that maybe it was real. Otherwise, not so great (although I think they did a great job with suspense in the first one – kept me on pins and needles wondering what would happen and when).

        Vic

      • Most of the scary movies made today are fake, so what you’re saying must not just apply to this movie. So, what’s the point of pointing it out?

  13. gotta say it – and at least I’m not the first – dull as dish water. this trailer does absolutely nothing to “excite” me for this movie. no more so than the first movie’s trailer did. I didn’t “hate” the first movie, but I found it dull and unoriginal, and with a mind-numbing lack of suspense.

  14. I had to replay it a few times because maybe I missed the scary part =S i’m confused!

  15. Beware the girl in sweatpants!…lame…looks about as good as the first one did…and thats not a good thing

  16. UH? ok? And….. they call this scary? DUH???..WTF1 It was snore–bring..how big a coward is it than this would scare the pee out some bobblehead..LNAO11

  17. Wasn’t scary at all.

  18. I can’t understand why people brag about not finding the movie creepy or scary. I don’t believe in any of that, but I still enjoyed the movie because it is more exciting than our boring world. If you lack the imagination to enjoy it, that’s not necessarily a good thing.

    • Completely agree with you! :) Stop bragging people, you’re just not giving anything hitting your way a chance, especially this since it got a lot of publicity.

  19. Wish i could see a ghost i have hundreds of questions to ask it ..lol afraid no ..lol and I’m a girl..been there dome ath people are scary ghost naw!lolI do get grossed about when drunks hurl..lol now that’s sacry..lol!!!

    • I think one day you’ll get what you asked for, and encounter some paranormal activity. You’re way in over your head, have fun!

  20. Hah, my name’s Hunter. Talk about freaky.

  21. wow…not scary… and from what i have heard the first one was like the blair witch project…which sucked. so untill i see the first one im not going to see this

  22. i bet the disembodied/distorted voice at the end of the trailer says sumthing Ahla Cloverfield’s “Its Still Alive” audio snipett after the credits, when played in reverse states “help us”.

i lack the softwear to speed up or reverse the audio from the trailer so….. if some one else could do it ???

    the dude would abide.

  23. They should just stick to making trailers. This one’s a bit creepy as was the one for the original.
The movie was just annoying and I can’t imagine this one being any better.

  24. Hunter sounds more like a dog’s name.

    • I have a dog named hunter, and that is what I was thinking.

  25. I loved the first movie and cant wait to see this one. The thing that the people who found the first movie to be dull and boring dont realize and clearly dont know is that things like this really do happen in the world. I am from Central Africa and trust me when I tell you that spirits, demons, whatever u wanna call them really do exist. People living in europe and the US dont come across these type of things anymore and therefore find them to be silly. But anyone from a third world country can attest to the fact that they do exist, here in the US and europe there are too many people, too much noise and too much going on for these things to take place. Go to my country and spend a night in the woods alone and trust me you’ll change ur tone. All im saying is, before u start bashing something as b******* u should realize the world is a LOT bigger then the little town uve lived in ur whole life. There are a lot of scary and unexplainable things out there in the world my friends.

    • take it from someone who has experienced paranormal activity, when stuff like this really happens to you it isnt so funny anymore..the movie is not ment to be scary it’s ment to make you think..to take into consideration, “what if” type thing. now dont get me wrong i didnt get pulled outta bed or anything but i was choked, and i did go to the doctor for x-rays because i couldnt walk or extend my stomach for 3 days after my paranormal incident. my fiance experienced some activity as well our stereo which was turned off, turned on full blast at 5 in the morning skipping over and over to the “I wait” part of lindsay lohan’s confessions of a broken heart. i totally agree with alex k, go to somewhere thats known to be haunted i think you will change your tune. i’m not able to see ghosts but i can sense and hear them, had one tell me he wasnt finished with me..sounded like someone tuning an old radio but i knew what he was saying, just watch paranormal state or better yet paranormal kids, this kinda stuff does happen, people are just afraid that others will judge them as being crazy (which can happen)but we are not alone in this world, u would be foolish to think we are.

  26. I actually didn’t think the first one was scary at all. I actually kind of hated it. Oh well. I’ll be seeing Saw VII instead… but not in 3D. That’s just dumb.

  27. that is what I thought. Okay, guys…for those that said, it isn’t real so it isn’t scary…really? Are there any “real” scary movies? Did you really fall for the Blair Witch thing? it is just simple jump out and gotcha stuff, but so was the exorcist, the decent, and most scary movies. also, that stunt by cinemark to take the trailers off….can you say “marketing ploy”?

  28. What I’m trying to fiquer out is why they show down stairs? Not the kitchen. But, the livingroom with the stairs. And I think it’s the same house. By the stairs. But, anywho. Of you can tell me why that scene is shown i’d appreachiate it!:D

  29. I’ve been a fan since the first, so I’ve been constantly returning to the paranormal activity 2 website. Well, today (july 27, 2010 I return for my daily routine. Something is different…again!
