Paranormal Activity 2 On The Way?

Oh Hollywood, you would make me laugh if you didn’t make me want to cry.

A couple of days ago we wrote about an upcoming British horror film called The Possession of David O’Reilly, which is a “shockumentary” (guess that’s the new buzz term for found-footage horror flicks) about a demonic spiriting terrorizing a young couple in a London flat. That same post foretold of a movie industry gold rush attempt to recreate the smashing success of Paranormal Activity, a small film from director Oren Peli made for $11K, which has gone on to gross $86 million domestically. The decision NOT to remake Paranormal Activity into a big-budget film turned out to be a wise choice for Paramount, which is now swimming in unexpected (and substantial) profits.

But was that brief flash a wisdom a fluke? I ask because now comes word that Paramount is now moving ahead with Paranormal Activity 2.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Viacom (which owns Paramount) CEO Philippe Dauman made the opening statements about a  Paranormal Activity sequel during an earnings call meeting yesterday morning. While acknowledging that PA has been something of a surprise (for both moviegoers and the studio), Dauman just as quickly acknowledged that a sequel would lack the element of surprise that has made PA a runaway hit. According to Dauman, “Our team will come up with the right creative and marketing approach to make sure that we benefit from a sequel…”

Now I’m betting that over half of you (the ones old enough to remember) are already making the mental jump back to the year 2000 when Artisan Entertainment tried to cash in on its own low-budget success story by offering us the abominably bad Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows. That movie got slapped with a much bigger budget than Blair Witch’s $60,000 price tag, only to crash and burn in theaters. So what will be Paramount’s “creative approach” to avoiding such a catastrophe? “Bigger budget” and “logical progression of the story” are the two pitch-points that instantly spring to my mind, at least.

“Ever heard the one about Katie and Micah?”

People are pretty much split over Paranormal Activity, but you can’t deny that the film is a simple ghost story – the sort you used to hear while sitting in the pitch dark around the fire pit at summer camp. The great things about those old ghost stories? They always remained intact (for the most part) no matter who was telling the tale or how many times the story got re-told to a new generation of campers. In fact, if somebody ever told the story wrong, there were enough people familiar with it to call them out!

We all know this is Hollyweird we’re talking about, but trying to take a new-age “campfire ghost story” like Paranormal Activity and stretch it out into a horror franchise cash-cow seems like a doomed venture. You’ve already got a portion of the audience feeling like the first film was a rip-off (see our comment section), and what about the multiple endings to the movie? Some people are going to tell you there’s no room for a sequel; other will say there TOTALLY is room (and need) for one – it all depends on which ending they saw in theaters.

Rest assured, however it shapes up, Paranormal Activity 2 is coming – the profit margins guarantee it. Will it be done right? I don’t know – has something like this EVER been handled correctly by Hollywood? Sound off and let me know what you think.

  1. It doesn’t sound like it’ll work out. I haven’t seen “Paranormal Activity” yet, but I do know that it’s almost impossible to get the same success twice since the first time was by accident. Part of what makes it so cool is that it was a low budget movie that was filmed right there in the director’s house with brand new no-name actors. They could try to do it again, but it’d probably just end up cheesy and they’ll suffer the same fate as “Saw” and watch their profits decrease with every sequel.

  2. Don’t do it. That is all.

  3. It would be amazing if they could pull it off.

Just like it would be amazing to see pigs fly.

  4. when you do a sequel, reflect the ORIGINAL authenticity of the first….like the first film never ended continuation….like what happens to the police officers and who killed who from the last movie (really)

  5. hey,

this is about the sequel to ‘Paranormal Activity’, I think it would be good to have this as DIANE’S(similar to Katie)Story???
it’s totally fine if you don’t agree but it would be an interesting perspective.

  6. @Angela,

I personally think the back story of Diane is an extraordinary excellent idea.
It will be good to see how her story started way before Katie’s did.
I’m guessing the producer’s would have to be extremely hesitant and delicate of the movie to avoid the bad success similar to blair witch 2.
I will be so excited to see another sequel to Paranormal Activity. :)

  7. A SEQUEL to this horror flick may sound good but there is only a 50% chance of it making big. The phenomenal success that this movie received is mainly because of its Unexpected Release and with a shoe string budget, the director pulled it off very nicely. Now, with the expectations running high like anything, a sequel during 2012 may sound good but in actual IT WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL……Perhaps Hollywood Directors (including amateur directors like Oram Peli) should come up with these kinda experimental movies which will satisfy the audience.

  8. I watched the movie and the first thought that came to mind was oh my god, another cloverfield. then i just felt like i was watching another episode of ghost hunters just with more action. i don’t believe the studios should waste their money on another movie since it would just be pointless. take a lesson from the blair witch 2. please, don’t do it. save your money for something more worth it. next don’t overthink a situation too much, you guys just mess up movies when you do.

  9. hmmm, well, if you KEEP the eerieness, incessant curiosity of one character and highlight “why” the main two characters contradict each other in principle, AND follow that through into “what happened downstairs” at the end of the Paranormal Activity…you have a sequel worth watching. Human relationship tension, confusion, and human contradictions that lead somewhere “dark” has been a very successful movie formula. I would watch it if the sequel was like this.

  10. To be perfectly honest Paranormal activity bored me senseless, there was no storyline just a bunch of random sounds and the occasional dragging from the bed; However i sawe the original and other ending and granted the new ending has a bit more of the shock factor and whilst this is just my opinion i do feel this movie was gross;y overrated.

  11. I think if you do make a second one you need to make it a whole lot scarier and longer. Mayber if you don't have her die she could get pregnant from that one night her and Micah had sex? And then the baby becomes posessed or something? Whatever you do you need to make it a lot scarier.

  12. yeah well personally i doont think there should b a squel just sayin cuzz i didnt like the first one u guys were making fun of demonds and that can come back on u if the devil wants it to

  13. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY WUZ REAL GOOD EVEN THOUGH I THOUGHT IT WUZ REAL UNTIL I SAW 3 DIFFERENT ENDINGS!,BUT A PART2?—OH THIS IS HOW IT,S GONNA GO{SEVERAL YEARS LATER A NEW COUPLE MOVES INTO THE SAME HOUSE AND AWAKENS THE EVIL IN THE HOUSE AND THE THEY SUFFER THE UNHOLY CONSEQUENCES}

    • It wasn’t the house though, it was katie…

  16. I WANT A PARANORMAL ACTIVITY PART 2!!!!

  17. I think that Paranormal Activity 2 would be a great idea! I loved the first one, but the thing is…. like everyone else is saying, flash-back to the first movie. I like the Diane idea as well. It would also be cool if you did a new couple moving into the house with Katie still “living” there. That way we would see new hauntings… Idk. Tell me what you think.

  18. ok i’ve seen paranormal activity and i have to say it was a pretty sweet movie as for making a second that’s their choice i say go for it if u have a way to do so maybe a back in time type thing on her sister or something just shooting ideas anyway i would love to see a second one but it will defenently be tough
