No need to double-check, you read that headline right.
The folks over at Dreamworks (a division of Paramount) have reminded us of a time when being a movie studio actually meant something, by deciding NOT to remake the already-horrifying Paranormal Activity. In unrelated news, a recent survey of Hell shows the climate of the region down ten degrees from this time yesterday.
Paranormal Activity was a 2007 film about a young couple whose home is haunted be demonic spirits. The film was shot in the “Blair Witch” shaky-cam style and was the first film by writer/director Oren Peliwas. While undoubtedly an inferior remake would bring in millions, the original film was considered so good that… well, I’ll let you hear it straight from the horse’s mouth:

“…the movie tested so well, they decided that it would be the height of folly to remake a mock-doc-type film with unknown actors.’“
The man behind the quote is Steve Schneider, credited with producing Paranormal Activity (he’s also got several films in Development, including The Colony and The Flock).

Paranormal Activity is set to play at Fantastic Fest on September 25th (check back then, as Screen Rant will be covering the event). As of now, theatrical release details have not been made public.
Do you think The Blair Witch could have been improved if it had been remade with a ton of money behind it? If so, I’d think the same could be said for Paranormal Activity. Then again, I haven’t actually seen the film – but if Hollywood thinks it’s good enough NOT to be remade, I certainly feel motivated to check it out.
