‘Pain & Gain’ Preview Clip Showcases an Incompetent Kidnapping

Published 1 year ago by

After working primarily in science fiction for over five years, director Michael Bay will soon be returning to the genre that initially launched him into feature filmmaking, with the R-rated action-comedy, Pain & Gain. In the film’s (very loosely adapted) true-life story, down-and-out bodybuilder Daniel Lugo concocts a scheme to kidnap a rich, unscrupulous member of his gym. Unfortunately, Daniel and his accomplices are rank amateurs when it comes to criminality, and their plan starts going sour almost from its opening moments.

Bay oversees a cast headlined by Mark Wahlberg (Ted), Dwayne Johnson (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Anthony Mackie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), and Tony Shalhoub (Monk). He works from a script by Christopher Markus (Thor: The Dark World) and Stephen McFeely (Captain America: The First Avenger).

Showing off the Pain & Gain‘s wry depiction of immensely incompetent criminals, this clip bolsters the assertion that Bay has returned to the style and pacing of his Bad Boys days. It helps that it’s genuinely chuckle-inducing; Shalhoub’s look of vague annoyance is killer.

Gags in Bay’s films have always been something of a mixed bag, ranging from some genuine character-based laughs to broad, juvenile nonsense. So far, Pain & Gain seems to be going for something more absurdist and close to slapstick. Even those seriously turned off by the Transformers movies have commented on the potential this film. The effective combination of realism and wackiness in this latest clip gives us one more reason why.

  1. could be a funny movie. hope it is

  2. Loosely based comedy or not I have high expectations for this. This should be a great movie just to see someone views on the events that played out. Definitely read the Miami News Times write-up Jack7. It’s a very crazy story.
