‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer: Guillermo del Toro’s Monsters Vs. Robots Blockbuster

Published 2 years ago by , Updated April 22nd, 2013 at 8:41 am,

We’re approaching five years since a film directed by Guillermo del Toro (Blade II, Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) played in theaters, which has stoked fires of anticipation surrounding his new project, Pacific Rim. Of course, it helps that del Toro’s movie pays respect to the geek-favorite Japanese Kaiju (or giant monster) pop culture and robot/mecha genres – even though the filmmaker insists it’s not a pastiche or “greatest hits” homage.

Pacific Rim viral marketing has built-up even more interest among cinephiles over the past couple weeks, with material focused on the architectural structure of the film’s enormous human-piloted machinery (ie. robots known as ‘Jaegers’) and monster attack footage that highlights its unusual visual design.

Today, the first Pacific Rim trailer has released online and it better illustrates the film’s unique cinematography and color scheme, as has been teased throughout the viral campaign footage to date; not to mention, it lends further credibility to del Toro’s claims that he’s using a rugged and corrosive visual style to bring to life a romanticized adventure story told on a modern blockbuster scale (though, we’ve known that ever since we saw the Comic-Con footage last summer).

Here is the official synopsis for Pacific Rim:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

No doubt, Pacific Rim looks crazy-impressive, simply in terms of the sheer magnitude of the spectacle and action; not to mention, the great supporting cast featuring Idris Elba (Prometheus), Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy), Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Burn Gorman (The Dark Knight Rises) and Diego Klattenhoff (Homeland). On the other hand, there’s also the possibility that del Toro’s film reflects its influences too much for comfort – be it in terms of the Jaeger designs or the plot beats (see: Elba’s rousing call-to-arms speech).

Similarly, there are some fascinating sci-fi concepts at work in the ‘psychic love story’ from Travis Beacham’s script; it’s little wonder Legendary has a sequel in development, in case the film does indeed prove to be a (wait for it…) monster hit. Surprisingly, there are even a few moments that seem ripe for the 3D format – though, there are others that suggest del Toro’s should’ve stuck with his guns and not given into (studio?) demands for a post-conversion treatment

  1. Freaking epic.

  2. It looks all too familiar for something yet unseen.
With sights and echoes of movies already seen.

    • Probably the transformers sounds.

      • My ears did not bleed from the sound of metal scrapping that is also drowning out the sound of Michael Bay laughing at us because we hate him but still go to his movies.

So I don’t think it is that. ;)

        • Was it just my aging hearing, or did Charlie Hunnan’s speak-over voice get drowned out by the special effects and music??! I couldn’t hear anything he was saying.

  3. well okie dokie , so when does the line start for this one? … WOW

  4. BWAAAAMMMMM! :D

It that GlaDOS I hear?! Anyway, looks awesome!

    • *Is

    • I thought the same thing it sounds like glaDOS!

      for science…you inter-diminsional monster

  5. This s*** looks….CRAZY.

  6. Meh. The trailer does nothing for me. Not saying it’ll be a bad movie , Just never was a fan of the director. -shrugs-

    Bring me

    Man of Steel
    StarTrek 2
    Ironman 3

Already. Those are the moviees I look forword to for this summer.

    • +Thor 2

  7. Ughhhhh the effects!!! Too many awesome trailers this week for me guys.

  8. This is it. This is my childhood recognized. After years of Digimon, Godzilla, Power Rangers, Megas XLR and more, it has come.

If Del Toro can see this, all I can say is
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

  9. that robot voice sounds way too familiar with the video game portal

    • indeed, GlaDOS creeps me out

      • One, thing’s for sure: if there’s cake in the movie it’s a lie!

        • If you become light headed from thirst. Feel free to pass out.

    • That is because its Ellen McClain. Voice of our Favorite Psychotic AI.

Maybe Del Toro is a fan of Portal.

      • He must be

Maybe to go a step further…that’s how they explain it in the movie too

If I made an ai I would probably give it GlaDOS’s voice too ha

      • Guillermo del Toro is a big fan of Valve (Half Life & Portal). He keeps expressing his admiration out on almost every occasion. He even went on to such great extend of dispatching his daughter (still not sure what is his daughter relations with Valve guys) to Valve asking permission to lend Ellen McLain as Jaeger computer A.I. voice actress. The rest is history.

  10. Hell yea ive been waiting for them to reboot power rangers!

  11. Looks pretty cool. Transformers vs. Godzilla, only more awesome. Oh, and it has IDRIS FREAKING ELBA!!!

  12. Holy Crap this looks EPIC! I always loved giant monsters and giant fighting mechs.

  13. Oh my god. Del Toro, giant mecha, giant aliens, Idras Elba. Sign me up.

  14. Godzilla…eat your heart out! I’m just giddy with anticipation!!!

  15. HOLY ****

i knew this film was gonna be interesting but DAMN! this has just overtook thor, iron man and man of steel to be my most anticipated movie next year! i seriously cannot wait, ive waited for this type of movie for so long.

  16. Well I’ll say this for Del Toro: He would have made a great director for EVANGELION.

    But yep, this looks awesome.

    Bring the Giant Monster Battles!!!!

  17. Man, what a week for movie trailers! The giant mechs didn’t quite blow me away like I was expecting but it still looks pretty cool. Man of Steel has my vote for best trailer though. :)

    • “Man, what a week for movie trailers!”

I know, right? Next year and those that folliow will be very expensive! So many blockbusters to watch and buy! I didn’t count and compare yet, but it sure feels like a dramatic increase over the last couple of years.

      • Yup! We have 6 huge movies next year: Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Man of Steel, Star Trek 2, Pacific Rim, and the second Hobbit movie later in the year. Then there’s potentially big movies like the Wolverine, Oblivion, Lone Ranger, GI Joe, Oz, Fast and Furious 6, After Earth, World War Z, Elysium, and a few others I’m probably missing. Soooo many movies and I’m excited for about 90% of those :)

        • Then there are the movies by good directors. David fincher 20000 leagues under the sea, coen brothers gambit, alonso cureon gravity and all the other oscar films

  18. man, this movie looks stupid. Giant robots fight monsters. S.T.U.P.I.D

  19. Mechs worthy of any Japanese anime vs huge inter-dimensional monsters……the Japanese monster movies of the 50′s-60′s plus mech anime have FINALLY made it to live action in style….there isn’t anything left to say.

  20. Like most, after seeing this, I can’t help but to think about Godzilla and Transformers… but also Neon Genesis Evangelion or Eureka7.

  21. Producers, Writers and Director of Godzilla

    Just Crapped out Bricks.

    • Well since Legendary Pictures also has a hand in Godzilla.

They have to know what to expect now?

  22. Feels a bit like Neon Genesis Evangelion. Not saying that’s a bad thing but i would much rather see an NGE moive than something entirely new that’slike an NGE movie.

  23. Im already going to stake out my place in line for this!Holy s#!t as a anime & Godzilla/giant monster fan,I CAN NOT FREAKING WAIT!!!

  24. Note to humanity: If we are ever attacked by gigantic, interdimensional, sea creatures, I hereby volunteer to pilot a giant fighting robot.

  25. This looks way too cheesy for me.It reminds me so much of Evangelion minus the whiny b****

  26. Flipping awesome! I loved jax doing the VoiceOver at the beginning.

  27. in the words Darth Vader to Luke in Empire ”Impressive”

  28. I thought I heard a voice from the portal games.

  29. I have all the faith in the world in del Toro and I’m pretty excited to see this but I do have 1 concern.
    Charlie Hunnam.
Yeah he does fine on Sons of Anarchy but I just don’t know if he has the chops to lead a huge film like this…

    • He doesnt have to lead the film….. just the robot lol jk
