Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming blockbuster monster movie Pacific Rim has been snagging the attention of film geeks ever since the Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth director first announced it. From the onset, the project sounded like a bold attempt to make something akin to the popular anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion as a live-action, blockbuster film. No pressure there.
A recent official synopsis has conveyed an even deeper plot, involving an odd-pair of pilots – played by Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam and Babel star Rinko Kikuchi – who must use a mind-melding device to co-pilot a giant robot, used to defend humanity against giant monsters that begin to invade the planet.
That all sounds epic enough in concept, but Guillermo del Toro recently described battle scenes from the film that – if realized in the way that we know the acclaimed filmmaker is able to do – will be bar-raising – potentially mind-blowing moments on film. Just listen to what the man himself had to say to Total Film:
“We had a Tokyo scene that we shot here in Toronto. We had several Hong Kong scenes and a few scenes in Australia, through the television. We briefly see the kaiju take over San Francisco. The whole Pacific Rim needs a sense of danger.”
“We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view.”
Pacific Rim is certainly one of our most anticipated films for 2013; the simple fact is, Guillermo del Toro has delivered something unique and at least somewhat enjoyable (Blade 2) – if not outright spectacular (Pan’s Labyrinth) – in just about every project he’s been involved in. There’s legitimate reason to believe that these scenes described above will be delivered; it’s a reasonable response to get goosebumps at the thought of sitting in a theater and seeing this play out on screen.
Robot vs. Monster battles on the bottom of the ocean and in the air. ‘Nuff said.
Pacific Rim will be in theaters on July 12th, 2013.
