‘Pacific Rim 2′ Set for 2017 Release; Animated Series in Development

Published 10 months ago by

Some movies are runaway hits, others are box office flops, and then there are those that fall somewhere in the middle. Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 monsters-vs-mechs sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim fell into the latter category, and for a long time it was unclear if the (expensive) film’s $411 million worldwide box office gross was enough to warrant a sequel.

Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull said earlier this year that he considers Pacific Rim a financial success, especially considering the fact that it was an original IP. There were further good omens this summer when del Toro revealed that he was working with Zak Penn on writing a sequel, and now Universal has officially announced that Pacific Rim 2 will arrive in 3D and IMAX theaters on April 7th, 2017.

This will come as very welcome news for those who enjoyed watching the battle for the domination of Earth between the invading Kaiju and the man-made Jaegers in Pacific Rim, and are intrigued to see what else could be done within the universe. In a video announcement of the news, del Toro also revealed that an animated series based on Pacific Rim is now in development, and that the comic book series that started with Travis Beacham’s Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero will be continued.

There might be a long wait until we get to see the next major movie in the Pacific Rim franchise, but this announcement means that Legendary and Universal are convinced enough by its potential to turn Pacific Rim into a franchise rather than just a standalone release. Putting three separate projects based in the Pacific Rim universe into development simultaneously is a pretty major commitment.

There have been a few hints and teases regarding what Pacific Rim 2 might be about, such as Charlie Day’s comments that del Toro was interested in turning his character, Newt, into a villain for the sequel. In a new statement made to Buzzfeed, del Toro confirmed that Jaeger pilots Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) and Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) will definitely return, along with a few other favorites:

“The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”

The co-writer and director didn’t give away any extra details about the plot of Pacific Rim 2 in his video announcement (though that looks like Crimson Peak material in the background) but he did sound very pleased by the deal, saying, “We’re all very happy to be bringing you more Kaijus and more Jaegers kicking each other’s butt.”

  1. Hi H,

Lovely to meet up with you last week; it was such a privilege to share tea and ice cream with you once again.

Hope all is well with you.

  2. I can’t wait action movie but Animated Series on TV??? It is going to fail. What a silly for animated series, jeez.

    • Giant robots and monsters for an animated series… exactly how could that fail?

      • Ya kids will hate watching Giant robots fight monsters!

      • R.I.P. Genndy Tartakovsky’s Sym-Bionic Titan.

      • I just guess. Wait and see. :)

        • You’re a fool.

  3. I think this is a good move. PR is very likely one of those movies that will gain a larger and larger following through word of mouth.

  4. Great, now when will Hellboy 3 happen?

  5. Congrats Mr. Del Toro, you have shown all those grown ups’ lovers and PR haters what a good movie is about. Now, with the proper merchandising and marketing, this sequel will have the opportunity to show its worth.

  6. Are there no Anime fans here from the 80s to present? Pacific Rim is an obvious rip-off of Neon Genesis Evengelion. Check it out an see for yourselves.

    • Yes, Evangelion was a PARTIAL inspiration for PR. But most of the influence lay in the old tokusatsu films of the 60s and 70s. Never heard of them? I wouldn’t think so, given your blind accusation of NGE ripping-off. Try doing some research next time.

    • The Jaegers in PR looked nothing like those in NGE. That’s like saying Robotech is a rip off of Mobile Suit Gundam…inspired? Sure, definitely. A rip off no.

    • Only the ignorant and ornery claim PR is a “rip-off” of Evangelion; true fans know the truth. And as a fan of both properties, I am sick and tired of having to point this out.

    • Pacific Rim borrowed from many different sources that were around way before Neon Genesis Evengelion.

    • And do you NOT know of the tokusatsu genre from the 60s and 70s?

  8. Today’s date is June 27th 2014 but after reading the news that the awesome Pacific Rim (my favorite movie of 2013)is getting a sequel,I now declare today’s date for me is now DEC 25th. Merry Christmas to all of us kaiju fans, now lets celebrate by go seeing Godzilla(2014) for a second, third or forth time. Thank you Guillermo del Toro,Thomas Tull and Legendary Pictures.

  9. Wow finally!! Love it, hope it will be even better than the first one.

    • That’s going to be difficult because the first one was pretty damn good,IMO,but I’m sure Guillermo will do his best to top himself. Guillermo del Toro has not disappointed me yet.
