Pacific Rim: Maelstrom remains in its infancy since being revived with new director Steven S. DeKnight. The cast for the long-delayed but highly anticipated sequel to Pacific Rim is still largely unknown, but Charlie Hunnam will not return and Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega has been added in a major acting role and also as co-producer. Scott Eastwood is additionally in talks for a “key” role.
Producer Guillermo del Toro recently hinted at other returning cast members, but did not mention any new names. There will, however, be at least one other noteworthy new addition to the cast of the film, and DeKnight himself recently dropped a hint that semi-revealed the new addition. There’s a catch: you need to guess from a list of over two dozen names, and it’s from the cast of an entirely different film altogether.
DeKnight posted on his Twitter account Monday a review for upcoming horror film The Belko Experiment, which will see a wide release in March 2017. Belko boasts a deep and diverse cast of both young and veteran actors, one of which DeKnight claims will appear in Pacific Rim 2 and none of which appeared in the original, making it a new cast member entirely.
Pacific Rim’s similarly diverse cast doesn’t make DeKnight’s hint any easier to decipher. Veteran character actors like Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) or John C. McGinley (Scrubs, Office Space) could fit in, while the presence of Charlie Day in Pacific Rim could also make room for actors like Josh Brener (Silicon Valley) or John Gallagher Jr. (The Newsroom). The Belko Experiment cast also features Adria Arjona (True Detective), Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Owain Yeoman (The Mentalist).
Belko is very much an ensemble work, which offers plenty of possible guesses as to whom will shift into a new role in Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. Any of the aforementioned names could be work well in the sequel if fit into the right kind of role for his or her abilities.
Though the cast has ostensibly become more fresh and intriguing due to DeKnight’s hint about the new addition, the sequel is still in the very early stages of production and many cast members from the 2013 original still have not confirmed their returns. It has certainly added good new talent to the cast, but delays and near-cancellations have made the sequel troubled from the start.
Pacific Rim: Maelstrom will release in theaters on February 23, 2018.
