Pacific Rim fans were thrilled to hear that a sequel, Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, once thought to be a questionable proposition, was back on. Following the announcement, however, fans have had to accept that the franchise would be returning without some of their favorite characters from the original film. One character who was going to be missed no matter what was Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost, who didn't survive the original and is set to be succeeded by a son played by John Boyega.

Recently, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens star has taken steps to reassure fans that he has every intention of doing right by the role.

While Boyega's participation in the production has been known for some time, the busy actor hasn't had much to say about the role before now -- with plot details and overall story plans for the sequel still being kept under wraps. But the actor broke his (relative) silence on social media, posting a image of Elba and a brief message to fans to his Instagram account:

The image, depicting Elba in his Jaeger pilot armor from the original film, was accompanied by his character's most famous speech and followed by a brief addendum from Boyega affirming that he is (as reported) playing the son of Stacker Pentecost in the film and that he intends to deliver a character that can stand up to his iconic predecessor:

"My dad said it right the first time but I'll take it from here."

Left largely unsaid is what his character's actual role in the film will be. The original film did not mention Pentecost having a son of his own, and the accompanying hashtag to the quote, "#iamapentecost," would seem to imply that Boyega's character may be facing pressure to prove himself worthy of a legacy he may not want or feel fully a part of. It's also highly plausible that Elba's character may not have known about the existence of his son in the first place, explaining his absence from the events of the original and providing an internal conflict to fuel the new story.

Fully titled Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, the sequel is set to take place several years after the events of the first film. Full plot details are not known, but the story is said to place the "mad scientist" characters of Dr. Newton "Newt" Geiszler and Dr. Herman Gottlieb more at the forefront of the main events.
