After months of waiting, Pacific Rim fans are finally getting new Jaeger versus Kaiju action - sooner than they may have been expecting. While we still have a two year wait (assuming the schedule doesn't shift) before Pacific Rim 2 hits theaters, Legendary Pictures and Guillermo del Toro are attempting to bridge the gap with a new line of comic books - titled Pacific Rim: Tales from the Drift.

Pacific Rim die-hards are likely already aware that the series mythology was previously explored in the prequel graphic novelPacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero. However, whereas Tales from Year Zero was a one-shot story, chronicling the early days of humanity's battle with the invading Kaiju (and giving background to the men, women, and giant robots featured in the first film), Tales from the Drift will be told over the course of four issues - presenting an all-new adventure set within the Pacific Rim universe.

Set to arrive in November of 2015, Pacific Rim screenwriter Travis Beacham developed the Tales from the Drift story - which was adapted to comic book form by writer Joshua Fialkov and artist Marcos Marz. For the time being, Legendary is keeping the tie-in story under wraps but readers should expect that Tales from the Drift is a follow-up to Tales from Year Zero not a direct sequel to the Pacific Rim feature storyline - meaning that, while it might not advance the film story, it could still dig into the series mythology while also showcasing some fun Jaeger on Kaiju action.

After all, even though presenting a scaled-back Jaeger program in Pacific Rim may have been instrumental in the film story (and the development of its included characters), there's no doubt that fans would have loved a larger glimpse into the past - when a diverse roster of Jaegers were battling with giant monsters on a routine basis.

Guillermo del Toro talks Pacific Rim 2 and Animated Series

In addition to Tales from the Drift, Legendary also announced a pair of entirely original comic book series, Black Flag and Cops for Criminals:

A riveting espionage thriller Black Bag, starring Legendary Comics’ first female action hero. This gripping series about a suburban wife-turned-covert government assassin comes from writer Chris Roberson, creator of the breakout comic iZombie (recently adapted into a network TV series), and features art from fast-rising talent JB Bastos, known for his standout work on Night Trap.

Legendary is partnering with acclaimed writer Steven Grant on Cops For Criminals, a daring new crime-thriller series about a federal agent forced to find true justice in the criminal underworld. Pete Woods, whose long and storied career includes iconic franchises such as Deadpool, Catwoman and Robin, returns to pencil, ink and color the title.

Where exactly Guillermo del Toro intends to take Pacific Rim in the future remains to be seen - but, with only two years before the sequel is slated for release, it's likely that details will be rolling out in the coming months.
