Much to the surprise of many, Nintendo ended Wednesday's Indie World showcase with a surprise reveal for Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals. Oxenfree received wide critical acclaim in 2016, charming audiences with a dark and mysterious story about a group of teens encountering the paranormal on an island. The game's art style, dialogue, and highly atmospheric world helped it stick into the minds of its players, and it seems that the sequel is keeping to that winning formula.

Nintendo revealed the sequel alongside many other indies, including confirmation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge for Switch, at its latest Indie World presentation, putting Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals in great company. The success of the first game put developer Night School Studios on the map and allowed it to make other great indies, such as Afterparty and a mobile game based on the acclaimed TV show Mr. Robot. Night School has evolved a lot in the last few years, and it seems likely that Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals will begin to reflect the studio's changes and successes.

Nintendo allowed Night School Studio the honor of having the infamous "one more thing" spot at April 14's Indie World showcase. The brief and somewhat unnerving trailer for Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals showcases a new protagonist named Riley and a mysterious island known as Camena. Details are relatively scarce for the sequel, but what's known for sure is that it will join many other great indies on Nintendo Switch later in 2021, and a Steam version has also been confirmed.

It doesn't seem like there are any obvious direct links to the original game, outside of its unique gameplay and dialogue and island setting (with the original having taken place on the haunted Edwards Island). It's got a new island and protagonist, but the game's description on Steam is keen to call out that it's set five years after the first game. Whether or not old characters will return or if one of the first game's multiple endings will factor into Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals remains to be seen.

While the latest Indie World didn't floor many, Nintendo's indie game support has been stellar on Switch. Between announcing this surprise sequel, being the first console Dotemu confirmed for TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, showing off a bevvy of smaller titles, it's clear that Switch is still the hottest platform for indie developers. Indie games and general are now more mainstream than ever, with programs like ID@Xbox dedicating entire shows to smaller titles. Allowing Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals a dedicated spotlight will no doubt shine a light on Night School's work, but also hopefully get people interested in other thoughtful indie games, too.
