The release date of Outlander season 3 has finally been confirmed with the release an official poster highlighting the separation between Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan). The star-crossed lovers are expected to eventually reunite with each other but they first have to go through trials and tribulations before they finally find themselves in each other's arms.

Tackling the events of Diana Gabaldon's novel series of the same name, the third season is scheduled to tread the story of Voyager. Fans of the books may already have an inkling as to what will go down in the upcoming outing but folks behind the show have previously shared that while they have stuck to the source material fairly well in the first two installments, they are ready to take some creative liberties to keep the show fresh and interesting for everyone.

Starz announces the series will be back on network September 10, 2017 - an announcement that was quickly met with excitement and enthusiasm from fans. The network also released a poster of the two main characters separated by the rock of Craigh na Dun in their respective generational attire.

The release date marks the end of "Droughtlander,"  - a term coined by the fans that means the lack of any episodes from the show. The word was first used during the series' break in between seasons when Straz was very mum about any kind of update on the show. Despite the wait time in between outings apparently being longer this time - a 14-month gap compared to the previous 11-month hiatus, the Outlander community was mostly satisfied given the release of various promo material throughout the period like stills from Outlander season 3 and a teaser trailer.

Outlander season 3 picks up after the cliffhanger - but hopeful - season 2 finale in which Claire found out that Jamie survived the battle of Culloden after years of presuming he had already died. Re-energized by the support she finally got from their daughter, Brianna (Sophie Skelton), the time-traveling lead is getting ready to return to the stones and find her Scottish husband back in the 1800s.

While reuniting Claire and Jamie after decades of being without each other is already a given, Outlander will milk their time apart a little bit more with the use of other time lapses to see how they have evolved over the years that they were separated. This, in turn, will be pivotal to how they would handle their relationship moving forward. It is important to note that in Claire's current time, her first husband, Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) is already dead, so she could very well stay in Jamie's era. The question is whether Briana will take part in the time-travelling or not.
