This Week in TV:
Starz unveils the Outlander season 1, part 2 premiere date; USA casts Josh Holloway (Lost) as the lead in Colony; Seth MacFarlane’s Blunt Talk casts Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) as its female lead; and Netflix secures U.K. series Peaky Blinders.
Starz has announced that season 1 of its hit drama Outlander will return with the first of its final eight episodes on Saturday, April 4, 2015.
With season 2 already commissioned by the network, the adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling book series is certainly off to a strong start, but not just with the folks at Starz. The first eight episodes have received generally favorable reviews from critics (read our mid-season finale review), and have scored well with most fans as well.
Continue with Outlander season 1 when the series returns to Starz on April 4, 2015.
The USA Network has announced a new drama titled Colony, which landed Josh Holloway (Lost) as its lead this week.
While little is known about the show, it is described as “a family drama/thriller about life in Los Angeles after a mysterious ‘foreign’ occupation.” Holloway will star as former FBI agent Will Bowman, who – in order to protect his family – is forced to work with the occupational government to bring down a growing resistance movement inside the L.A. colony.
Holloway last starred in CBS’ Intelligence, a series that only lasted one season. However, he could find better luck with the apparent alien-invasion series Colony, a show that not only reunites him with Lost producer Carlton Cuse (Colony‘s co-writer), but one that we expect to receive a lot of support from the network that is in need of a primetime drama after seeing Psych and Burn Notice conclude their runs this past year.
We’ll pass along the latest on Colony as more news comes in.
After receiving a two-season straight-to-series order from Starz back in May, the Seth MacFarlane-created comedy Blunt Talk cast Australian actress Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) as its female lead.
Weaver will be opposite Patrick Stewart (X-Men) as Rosalie Winter, the tough, straight-talking producer/manager of Stewart’s Walter Blunt, a British import who is intent on conquering the world of American cable news. Though Rosalie has spent 20 years working with Walter, their professional relationship is complicated by a one-night stand.
Weaver will also join new cast member Adrian Scarborough (The King’s Speech), who will play Harry Chandler, Walter’s misbehaving, alcoholic manservant.
Though created by MacFarlane, the live-action series will be run by Bored to Death creator Jonathan Ames. Despite not seeing a pilot yet, Starz has already committed to 20 episodes – and considering MacFarlane’s success with television comedies, we can certainly understand Starz’s confidence behind the show.
Starz hasn’t announced a premiere date yet for Blunt Talk, but we’ll continue to update you on the new series as it nears production.
The Weinstein Company and Netflix have teamed to release BBC Two’s gangster series Peaky Blinders on Netflix’s streaming service.
The drama – which follows the Shelby family, the titular gang, and the Blinders’ run-ins with rival illegal arms groups in 1919 Birmingham England – is set to debut its six-episode first season on Netflix at the end of the month. Season 2, which will begin airing on BBC Two on October 2, will hit Netflix in November.
The series stars Cillian Murphy (Inception), Sam Neill (Jurassic Park), Helen McCrory (Hugo), Annabelle Wallis (The Tudors), Paul Anderson (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), Iddo Goldberg (Mob City) and Charlie Creed-Miles (Harry Brown). Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises), Noah Taylor (Game of Thrones) and Charlotte Riley (Edge of Tomorrow) have joined the season 2 cast in the Steven Knight-created series.
Here’s what Netflix Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, had to say about the series:
“‘Peaky Blinders’ captivated audiences in the U.K. with its compelling storylines, powerful performances and stunningly beautiful imagery, and we cannot wait for our U.S. audience to experience the series for the first time on Netflix. We are thrilled to add this must-see series to our roster of exclusive content in the U.S.”
Look for Peaky Blinders season 1 on Netflix beginning September 30, 2014.
