Here’s the main list of winners from the 80th Academy Awards, plus a link to the other winners. To sum it up last night: yawn. Obviously they couldn’t do much in terms of writing because of the writers strike’s end just a couple weeks before, so the producers had created a huge amount of clips for an Oscar clip show. They did air some, but not all, thankfully.
It was also shorter, which is always a plus, but I noticed that I kept changing the channel to watch the lame Asteroid, a 1997 made-for-TV disaster movie with Michael Biehn. What does that tell you?
Anyway, the main winners:
Best Picture: No Country For Old Men
Best Director(s): Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country For Old Men)
Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis (There Will Be Blood)
Best Actress: Marion Cotillard in (La Vie en Rose, a surprise win)
After the jump, the others!
|
|
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men, which I hear he’s incredible in this)
Best Supporting Actress: Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton, an upset)
Best Original Screenplay: Juno (Diablo Cody)
Best Adapted Screenplay: No Country For Old Men (The Coen Bros.)
My thoughts: I’m more upset about Transformers losing the Visual FX Oscar to the big bomb, The Golden Compass! ARGH!
I wish I could go back to 1997 and take the Coen Brothers’ Screenplay Oscar for Fargo (a fantastic film, don’t get me wrong) and give it to John Sayles for Lone Star, and then give them the Best Picture and Director Oscars because The English Patient sucks.
And while I’m back in time, I’ll interrogate the voters why Dances With Wolves and Forrest Gump both beat Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction, respectively. Then again, these days they go for the darker material than ever berore.
I need to see some of these movies, but the dramas and indies bore me these days. One last thing, why does everyone in Hollywood and the media fawn over George Clooney?! He’s so overrated! And all his movies bomb, unless it’s Ocean’s whatever.

Heath,
I’m gonna disagree over Dances With Wolves and George Clooney.
Wolves is one of my all time favourite films. It’s just a masterpiece-and Costner Rocks!
Clooney, is a guy with the cajones to make good adult oriented cinema, in a time when Hollywood is chasing the teen dollar. God bless him!
Niall
Heath,I agree with you that George Clooney is over rated. The only movies I ever cared for him in was”O’Brother Were Art Thou”,and maybe”Ocean’s 11″.
I know I am in the HUGE minority on this one, but I thought Pulp Fiction SUCKED! I have NO idea why everyone thinks it’s such a great movie. Then again, when I see a Tarentino (sp?) movie that I like, it will be the first. I thought both Dances with Wolves and Forest Gump were much better films than that piece of garbage. As for this year’s winners, I haven’t seen any of those films, and probably won’t…
it went pretty much how i expected. i was glad diablo cody won though.
i would have liked to see cate blanchett win for supporting for playing bob dylan, she was great. the chick who won for michael clayton wasnt really even in the movie that much, i was confused by that win.
I think the Coen Brothers deserved it this year.
Never a big fan of Clooney. (Killed off batman for awhile).
(IMO)
Pulp fiction was a great film for its time.
The only movie on that list for Best Picture I had seen was No Country for Old Men (and I agree it should have won, it was awesome). I stopped having any respect for the Oscars when American Beauty won Best Picture.
I saw both Transformers and The Golden Compass; what the heck were these Oscar maggots thinking??!! Transformers had special effects I had never seen before in a live-action movie; The Golden Compass rehashed FX from the past.
Clooney was great in ER, but his movies have not been that great, IMHO. And yes, he did kill Batman.
Did anyone besides me notice that Brad Renfro and Roy Scheider were left out of the obituaries.
What a huge blunder!!!
^
IFC’s Spirit Awards (Oscars evil nephew) was far superior, as usual.
One thing Niall that sucked in a way about Dances with Wolves, was that it gave Costner a huge ego and that in turn transformed him into the major ass that he is today…
Did they mention Heath Ledger? Maybe they only listed 2007 deaths??
Vic
Yeah Vic they
mentioned Heath at the very end.
He died in January 2008 if I’m not smoking crack today..
From what I heard was that Scheider didn’t make the list “in time” and that he will be in next years. But they don’t have any excuse for Renfro.

Vic,
If you’ve ever seen Jurassic Park those dinosaurs are the same folks that produce the Oscars.
So there ya go.
