With all due respect Jessie if you use the best picture noms as movie you have to see you must be disappointed alot especial this year. With films like Milk. TDK was a great film and was better than half the movies on that list. Personally I loved TDK, but I think it’s more of a comment about how horrible 2008 was for movies than how great TDK was. The Wrestler was great, but there really wasn’t much else.

My response to upping to 10. It’s just what the oscars needed..More losers.

Well yeah I’m glad they get the recognition, and I would hate to see them get nothing because of a removal of the award, I’m just saying what they have said regarding the categorization of animated films. Wow that didn’t make any sense at all…

This is just stupid.
It would be better to expand the number of nominees if needed, so that it could range between 5-10 nominees. Would be a better solution

I realise that and totally agree with them. But without the Best Animated Feature catagory, the Academy wouldn’t suddenly treat them like every other movie. Isn’t it better they get SOMETHING than NOTHING?

I think they should be imparcial and honest enough to recognise the best movies of the year and not any specific number of them..
That would make it harder to select the movies, but at least it would be more fair. In a poor year we’d have less candidates and in a great one we’d have more..
This way a great movie could always hope to get a nod instead of counting if it will make into the top 5 or 10.
And by comparison we wouldn’t have nominations just to achieved a given number.

But then again, after watching Chicago I can’t have much faith in the Academy..

Actually Pixar would rather abolish the “Best Animated Film” category as they say they would rather have their films treated like regular movies and not put in some strange category. Brad Bird has been saying that for years.

It’s just retarded. Can you name five more films (aside from Dark Knight) from last year that should be included with what were? Iron Man? Indiana Jones? Twilight? Beveryly Hills Chihuahua? Go to boxofficemojo.com and look at the movies from last year and tell me what you would add. Quantum of Solace? Maybe. Hell, and that was with The Reader already nominated for some unknown reason and Milk nominated for political reasons.

THis is just an excuse to make MORE political noms and push more crappy movies into the public’s eye.

Waht they should do is this: One nomination in each category: Comedy/Musical, Drama, Action/Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Independent, Animated and then add the Highest grossing film of the year to the list if it isn’t already on there.

Hmm, based on that criteria, 2008 noms probably would have been:

Comedy/Musical: Tropic Thunder or Mamma Mia!
Drama: Frost/Nixon
A/SF/F: Benjamin Button
Indy: Slumdog Millionaire
Anim: Wall-E
Box Office: The Dark Knight

Honestluy, that would have been an exciting race/fight.

Oh, hey, who’s gonna break it to the 5 directors that helm Oscar Nominated ‘masterpieces’ but don’t get Best Director noms that they’re just screwed? You might see a new practice of Directors getting Producer creds just to cover such an occurance. Everyone must get an Oscar, donchyaknow?

With all due respect to “The Dark Knight” and the amazing acting that was Heath Ledger… he is the only thing I liked about the film that deserved an award. “Mamma Mia” I believe is the highest grossing film in the U.K, but you didn’t see it winning a BAFTA for Best Picture.

The Oscars are for the great movies, not the commerical successes that are fads in one season and then out in another… that is what the MTV Movie Awards are for.

I use the Best Picture nominees to know what to make sure i have to see. With ten nominees… its just like closing your eyes landing randomly on something at the local movie theatre.

At first I thought it was nice, but I’ve been thinking and it doesn’t seem like that. There are many things to question with this, but no doubt it’ll be interesting to see as the awards season comes. I personally would have made the change to 7 nominates in every category, escept maybe short films and documentary stuff. That would be cooler.

Not a bad idea but TEN FILMS!!! REALLY?!! Just so five more films can put on the DVD BluRay displays nominated for best picture..More is definitely better unless of course the quality is there..
