It’s been a long road for Orphan Black protagonist Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany) since her discovery that she was but one of many scientifically engineered clones all born on the same day in 1984. In the years since, Sarah and daughter Kira have faced many trials and tribulations, and encountered clones of both a friendly and hostile nature. Along the way, Maslany has made the best of this opportunity as an actress, creating dozens of completely unique characters that she somehow manages to imbue with very different personalities and energies. Alas, Orphan Black’s latest season is about to come to an end, and BBC America’s trailer for the sci-fi drama’s finale can be seen above.
A Canadian creation, Orphan Black’s popularity has transcended national borders, earning an international cult fanbase on both streaming and traditional TV. The series has also been a hit with critics, especially Maslany’s lead performance(s). As was well documented at the time, Maslany’s work proved so popular that when she was snubbed by both the 2013 and 2014 Emmy Awards, a vocal movement of disapproval sprung up.
This injustice was finally righted at the 2015 ceremony, with Maslany receiving an arguably long overdue nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance(s) on Orphan Black. While she didn’t win, it’s rare that genre shows get recognized at all in the major Emmy categories, making her inclusion a victory all the same. It remains to be seen whether or not she will be nominated again as part of this year’s 68th annual Emmys, for her work on the series’ fourth season.
That all said, one thing Orphan Black has never been is a huge ratings draw, with the series seemingly earning renewals mostly based on the devotion of its fanbase and the high amount of critical acclaim it attracts. Which makes it somewhat worrying that a fifth season renewal has yet to be announced by either Space – Orphan Black’s Canadian cable home – or BBC America. Orphan Black’s renewal announcements historically tend to take place several weeks prior to the end of the currently airing season, and yet not a peep has been made as to when or if season 5 is coming.
With series creators Graeme Manson and John Fawcett having previously said that they were planning on ending Orphan Black after season 5 anyway, one wouldn’t think this would be too hard a call to make for the networks in question, but the mind of a TV executive can be an unpredictable thing indeed. Here’s hoping this lingering question is resolved soon, preferably before the season 4 finale airs, so that the Orphan Black fanbase can tune in without wondering if this will Maslany’s premature last hurrah.
Orphan Black airs its season 4 finale on June 16th, 2016.
