It’s been a while since last we heard from the cult cable darling that is Orphan Black. The last time anyone checked in, the show had been renewed for a third season on both BBC America and its Canadian home, Space. Since then, it’s been a bit of a wait for anything new, but that changes today.
With the Doctor Who season 8 finale set to air this weekend, BBC America has chosen to take advantage of a great marketing opportunity by airing the first Orphan Black season 3 trailer for television’s underrated Tatiana Maslany, and just for kicks, they’ve sent it along here and now for all of you to enjoy.
While fans and critics alike have championed the series to no end, the ratings for the series have not been stellar, ultimately scoring not much higher in season 2 than in season 1 (the show has never crossed a million viewers an episode in its lifetime). Knowing that, it’s unclear at the moment how much further the series future will extend beyond season three, but if the upcoming run is in fact the swan song, there’s a good chance we’re in for one exciting final installment.
Last year’s season 2 finale ended with the reveal of a lifetime: that prolethean Mark is in fact a clone himself, an unaware member of the secret Project Castor, a plan devised to produce male soldiers for the military while Project Leda, the one that created Sarah and her sisters, would spawn female clones in a similar fashion. Going into season 3, things are going to hit the ground running in a major way, and it all starts with the truth Sarah learns in the final frame.
It’ll be interesting to observe how far Ari Millen can stretch his acting abilities next season and to see if he can stand in stride with Maslany, who has made a true name for herself thanks to her ability to completely diversify every clone she plays from one another. Anyone who saw the last scene of the season 2 finale is already aware of Millen’s masterful ability to play crazy, but can he personalize the way Tatiana can? That’s a question we’re not going to have an answer to for a while.
For the moment, all we can do is play this teaser on a loop and revel in its mystery as we wait for more footage from next season to appear.
Orphan Black premieres spring 2015 on BBC America.
