Open Discussion (And Site Commenting Rules) – September 3, 2010

Sep 3, 2010 by

Vic Holtreman of Screen RantAs usual – talk about whatever you like as long as it’s related to movies, TV or Screen Rant itself – just remember to play nice.

On every Open Discussion post I add the note “remember to play nice.” But it seems that on some other comment threads on the site that’s not always the case.

Things recently got very heated on another article on this site in the comments section and that’s going to be the last of it. A reminder of the rules here:

  • No profanity (yes, that includes the s-bomb, which it seems a LOT of people don’t consider profanity).
  • No personal attacks – If you call someone stupid, an idiot or worse, your comment will be deleted. I don’t care if it took you 30 minutes to write and is 500 words long.
  • Trollish behavior/Flame wars – these are NOT tolerated here. On the article I mentioned we let it go further than it usually does, and I regret not nipping it in the bud. If you’re pushing the envelope, you’re well aware of it and I don’t buy the “who me?” defense.
  • Going off topic – I realize that discussions can veer off the original topic of an article, but if things go WAY off track and stay there then it shouldn’t be discussed there. We’re increasing the Open Discussion posts to three a week and that should be plenty of opportunity to talk about items unrelated to specific articles.

There’s absolutely no need to be unpleasant towards each other – it’s completely possible to disagree with one another based on facts or opinions without attacking the other commenter personally or offending each other.

I’ve always prided myself on having the friendliest and most civilized movie website discussion area on the web, and I will not let that be hijacked by anyone, regardless of whether you’re a first time commenter or if you have 1,000 Screen Rant comments under your belt.

Accuse me of censorship, of being unfair, whatever – as far as I’m concerned this site is my house – and when you come into my house you live by my rules. If you can’t or won’t, there are plenty of other movie news sites out there that will let you say whatever you want to whomever you like.

Things have gotten a bit lax, but we’ll be tightening things up again in the interest of making Screen Rant a pleasant place to be, where you can talk about movies and TV without worrying about being attacked or offended.

Sincerely,

Vic Holtreman – Owner/Editor-in-Chief

  1. It was mentioned in season 1, when Tommy tod Leo that Janet took HIS house in the divorce,,,

    • If you keep watching they say they never actually got divorced. They consider them selves divorced, but they will say everyone in awhile that technically they are not. Sometimes the guys will say things like when are you gonna get divorced? At one point Janet tries to Divorce him and Leu is like it’s about time.

  2. Has anyone checked out Haven on SyFy? It’s on after Eureka and I have really started to enjoy that show. I think it’s a great follow up to Eureka on Friday nights. I hope that it does well and gets picked up for a new season. It kinda gives me an X-Files vibe.

    • i watch that too. both arent on tonight though:(

      • Yep, I finally had a chance to catch up on some shows I had on the DVR. Now watching the MLB channel playing Red/Cardinals. Good game so far!!

  3. Yep that thread did get heated, and that’s okay, we’re all different beings with different perspectives and ultimately we are going to clash over those perspectives at some point, that’s life. I’ve been coming here for over a year now, I don’t comment that much, but I almost always read the articles. A while back ago when I was goin’ through some rough personal stuff, I’d come here every day and read the articles and laugh at the comments and discussions and it would make my day a bit better because it was a safe, drama free zone. Hope it stays that way.

  4. Daniel,,, without saying too much does Johnny return as a ghost?

    Also,,,
Without any spoilers what did you think of Dex season 4?

    • 790 Yes he will be seen as a ghost, but not alot no where near as much as Jimmy. I was always upset we didn’t get to see the Chief as a ghost more.

Dex Season 4 is great probably the best.

  5. I don’t think they can lock down the actor that plays Johnny without hurting his career. Have you seen Oz, Daniel, he was a regular in that one.
    On Dextern,,
Cool, yeah I’m in the middle of the last few episodes now. So far my favorite scene is,,,

    Spoilers,,,,,,

Thanksgiving, when Trinity’s kid comes out and says he’s a murderer and Dexter hauls him off to the kitchen. Oh man that was some action! ;-)

  6. Anthony
What did u think of avatar?!?

  7. Time travel the ultimate power!!!!

    • i’d rather mind control a time traveler. win-win :)

  8. Vic, you’re awesome!!!

  9. Ok, I am just finishing up reading Stephen King’s “Bag of Bones” novel from the late 90′s. I have really enjoyed it. Has anyone else read it? I think it would be a really cool movie if it’s done right. A might BIG if considering that most of King’s stuff has been butchered on the big screen. I think that the filmmakers have failed to convey the utter creepiness that King can deliver via the printed word. Any way, I have tried to think of who can play the main characters in the film. Mike Noonan is a recently widowed 40 year old author. Mattie Devore is a 21 year old widow with a 3 year old daughter. Max Devore is the evil 85 year old grandfather who wants custody of the daughter. I think that someone like Matthew Perry would be great as Noonan. Not comedy, be has that look like a writer. (I also think Claire Danes would be great as his deceased wife). Kaley Cuoco of The Big Bang Theory I think could play Mattie. Christopher Plummer as Max??? Anyone here read this book and have any ideas??

    • if Frank Darabount did it it would be good, he seems to get Kings books more than anyone

      • I would also like to see Rob Riener look to other King stories at least one more time as well. Maybe it’ll help the Princess Bride director on a return to glory.

  10. I just read that Stargate Universe’s season premier is on September 28, a Tuesday.

  11. Jessie Shows I always recomend

    The Shield
    Angel
    Firefly
    Jericho
    Rescue Me
    Californication
    Supernatural
    Buffy
    Hung
    Breaking Bad
    24
    Psych
    House
    True Blood
    Dexter
    Quantum Leap
    Star Trek TNG
    Friday Night Lights
    Burn Notice
    Leverage
    Entourage
    Third Watch

those are some of my all time faves not that order

    • I’ve heard that “The Shield” is amazing. Going on my list. I’ve seen a the first couple episodes of “Californication” and “Hung.” I wasn’t a big fan of either. I’ve been meaning to give “Californication” another shot because of Mulder but I didn’t find “Hung” that funny so I stopped after like two episodes. Is really worth giving it a shot?

Interesting choices with “Rescue Me,” “Third Watch,” “Leverage,” and “Jericho.” Nobody has ever told me to watch them. What do you like about them? Same with “Burn Notice” and “Psych.”

I’m more of a “Star Trek: Voyager” fan (don’t hold it against me) so I’ve only seen out of order episodes of “TNG”… and the movies. I am a little iffy on “Quantum Leap.” I’m going to have to think about that one… (Don’t tell DrSamBeckett.)

The rest I’ve seen at least one full season or own all seasons available (“Angel” “Buffy” “24″ “True Blood”) or they’re already on my list. Thanks! This will definitely help my mental heath semester.

  12. Star Trek Voyager is my favorite overall Trek. I thought it was more like the original series then NG, or DS9… I also liked Janeway. She was a refreshing change.

    • im liking LEXX more and more..as far as my favorite show, hands down Chuck, cant beat that.

  13. Glad your digging LEXX, the show improves each season. 8-)

    • im only into season 2, been dealing with other things here, no time to watch as much as i wanted to. i just watched Stanleys trail, hopefully i can really grind out at least 6-7 episodes this weekend :)

  14. Ok so QLeap is good show but it is older and had some hit or miss episodes so it’s not for everyone.

Californication is an excellent show well worth another shot. Hung is good and Tom Jane is an amazing actor and does a great job. Only been one season though and I could see how some may not like it personally I love it.

Rescue me is fantastic 790 just recently got in to it as well I’m sure he’d suggest it as well. Very good show with unique characters great writing and it’s hilarious. Very similar to Californication though with a little bit more humor and firemen same basic style though both a very character Driven.

The Shield is my personal all time fave show. Deeply complex characters. The show is load with symbolism and depth. Very big story every season and I like that every action has a reaction. No bad dead goes unpunished neither do good deeds. I think it’s a show that deeply examines human nature and the choices we make as well as the darkness in us all and yet no one is completely evil. Even the worst have a light side while the best have a dark.

Third Watch is basic cop show that features firefighters and EMTs but it focuses more on character than usual and has more emotion than the average law and order or nypd blue. Leverage is funny but it’s a slow witty humor less of laugh all the time thing like the office it’s more witty and intellegent. It’s not the greatest show in the world but it’s very enjoyable to watch and good when you need something to do. Decently written characters but not enough focus on the other characters most of the development is with the main character.

Psyche is hilarious and clever. It’s more episode driven with out a lot of big story arcs but it’s so damn funny. Even the worst episode makes you laugh your ass off. Burn Notice is funny and smart and has excellent acting.

Jericho was an excellent show that was cancelled way to soon. It’s only one and a half seasons but they were very well written and gained even more fans on DVD. It was a very well crafted story arc the first season especially.

    • i LOVE Psyche!!

  15. Words can not express how much I hate Voyager. I hated that show so much. TNG got me in to Trek I went back and watched the original couldn’t stand it the show was riddled with bad acting and made cheesy things look serious. DS9 came out and it was not as good to me as TNG but I still liked it so I was excited to watch Trek V and was heart broken. I hated it.

    • Voyager was the first Star Trek show that I stopped watching while it was still running on television.

      I hated:

      - That it was basically Lost in Space.
      - The ship was in as factory new condition 4 years into a mission with no starbases on the far side of the galaxy as it was the day of the first episode.
      - Janeway’s nasal voice (I would have liked the French actress that was their first choice).
      - The fact that they didn’t make any preparations on the ship or in the story to adjust for the fact it might be a 60 year journey.
      - The fact the Maquis integrated into the crew so easily.
      - The fact that the writers didn’t give a damn about depth of character, their backgrounds, etc.

That’s off the top of my head.

      Vic

      • i never watched Voyager, after TNG left the air, i was Star Trek’d out for a while. sounds like i didnt miss much LOL

      • Hmm….almost all the reasons when I stopped watching. I gave up on Voyager when they booted Kes (Jennifer Lien) and brought in 7 of 9 (Jeri Ryan, although she’s a good actress, was only brought in for one reason)- because y’know, the first order of business is to take The Borg and make ‘em Mr. Wimpy, or in this case, Miss October.

I did enjoy some eps though- they really did some neat stuff with Garrett Wang’s Harry Kim. I really liked the ep where he and Tom Paris were on the prison planet-gulag; and the one where Kim died but…his ‘alternate duplicate’ took his place.

Speaking of Mr. Wimpy and Miss October, the biggest offense in Trek under the Braga-Berman wing was series finales. When they got thier mittens on the series finales of the Treks, you were compelled to watch wondering what they have to do to make people get the pitchforks…

      • Vic, I’d add Janeway’s willingness to violate the Prime Directive at the drop of a hat, and her faulty decision to destroy the Caretaker’s Array, which got them stranded in the first place.

I liked Genevieve Bujold in Coma and Dead Ringers, but she looked so inexpressive and ill at ease in the few scenes they shot with her as Janeway that Katharine Hepburn was actually a big improvement…

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pgAFV2YxLQ

    • “Voyager” does have its flaws, I know that. From what I’ve seen of “TNG” its a superior show (minus Will Wheaton. Can anybody explain that character decision to me?) But “Voyager” was always so optimistic.

The episodes I hated most were the ones where the executive producers would pimp out Riker or name drop Enterprise or Picard or Sulu. Get over yourselves. I know this is “Star Trek” canon so quit reminding me of better incarnations of your universe.

I mainly watched it for B’Elanna. She was the character with the most depth for me. She had so much history and personality that they could play and explore – - not that they did that often. There were a lot of great missed opportunities for this show…. but I just can’t help but love it!

    • You didn’t even like Nimoy’s Spock, Daniel? I think that’s one of the all-time great alien characterisations, and a performance that’s stood the test of time.

    • Voyager eventually grew on me. And 7 of 9 definitely upped the…uh, ratings. I, at first, hated the finale but after watching it again (and again and again :-) ), I think it was OK. Enterprise will forever have the most horrible finale of all.

My favorite has to be TNG. Loved the show and thought it had a great finale.

  16. man, now im gonna have to watch Star Trek lol thats about the only thing of Abrahms thats any good, he better not eff the sequel up

  17. More then anything Voyager really sets Vic off. 8-)

Just fyi, any fans of voyager, don’t bring it up. Lol

    • HAHAHA

  18. Farscape’s a real classic sci fi show.

    • ive seen bits and pieces of that show

    • God I loved “Farscape.” I never caught it when it aired new episodes and the reruns I saw would come at 2:00 in the morning. Ben Browder was top notch as John Crichton. So funny and witty and always a bit sad at being away from home. Him and Claudia Black had amazing chemistry.

      • That’s why they were put on Stargate SG1.

  19. Loved the characters and the ship. Sure it could have been better but it was still damn good.

Equinox was probably the best 2 part star trek ever.

    • damn this turned out to be a scifi weekend for me so far with the exception of Machete. Alien, Aliens, Avatar, Blade Runner…

  20. Its ironic but LEXX and Farscape were very much alike, even the ending was similar…

Did you see the Peacekeeper Wars Jessie?

    • I did. I bought it actually. I liked it for the most part. The cliffhanger from the unexpected cancellation did need closure. Wayne Pygram as Scorpius is a character I felt was truly visually frightening. Then the parts where Scorpius was in Crichton’s head were just so funny.

I think they tried to tie up too many ends. Chaini and D’Argo – - situations like theirs don’t always get as permanent a close as that relationship did. It felt forced and is not one of the aspects I like.

  21. Darren, if you compair Voyager’s tv finale to Abrams Star Trek movie there very similar, minus the tween angle.
    ^
Both go back in time, to correct one persons agenda, (Janeway, Spock).
The Ships they use are far more advanced in the timeline they are in. Both have personal reasons for changing the timeline (Vulvan destroyed, 7 of 9, and Chachotay dead).

I could go on, but as you can see Abrams really didn’t create anything new. He just spun it with a younger kirk and spock cast.

  22. I don’t know what came over me, but I was compelled to watch Zardoz again. Then Highlander. Then it occurred to me how Sean Connery got the part of Rameriez. At least for a minute.

Hey, okay. I know I been on a Zardoz kick all week, we all have our vices, momentary lapses of reason!!

Then I watched the director’s cut of 2005′s King Kong, and felt better.
That’s what I want to tell myself, anyway.

    • just tell me you didnt watch Highlander 2 as well and we’re good LOL im about to watch Close Encounters..

      • Original or Special Edition? In fact, can you even get the original theatrical cut on DVD? I’d always wanted to see what Neary saw on entering the mothership at end, and then when that scene was actually added, I kind of wished Spielberg hadn’t bothered…

Here’s a dead simple idea for a convention costume: red satin jumpsuit and aviator sunglasses. Job done. And you’d be perfectly attired for going out to a ’70s club night afterwards…

        • at THE end

          • it was on a pay channel lol it was the original cut

            • The one scene they cut out of the Special Edition that I’d like to see again was the Air Force base press conference. I can’t even remember that much about it – it’d just be interesting to see a pre-tinkered version.

    • I like the idea of spending a week with Charlotte Rampling, Darren! Zardoz: they don’t make ‘em like that any more!

      • i actually prefer Connery in Darby O’Gill and The Little People lol and yes, im KIDDING

        • LOL, I haven’t seen that one!

          • i think it was one of his first movies

  23. that reminds me about Connery, i need to track down Outland

    • He’s good as ever in that, anthony – Peter Boyle too. I loved Outland’s Alien-universe production design, I was just disappointed in it turning into an SF High Noon. Thought they could have done a lot more with the concept and setting.

      • i havent seen it in a few years, in going on the hunt for it tomorrow :) my ex stepdad took me to see it when i was 11, ive seen it a handful of times since.

  24. You can find Outland for around 8 bucks at frys. ;-)

    • it wasnt at my Frys last time i looked 790 :( i might have to go to the one in san marcos

  25. Still can’t stand Lexx but I’m trying to start watching Farscape just havnt gotten around to it no more than a random episode or two.

  26. ur gonna break 790′s heart daniel lol. i cant find farscape on hulu :(

  27. It doesn’t matter to me if Daniel doesn’t like LEXX, I could care less.
    ;-)

    • lol, i gotta bust his chops still

  28. 790 exactly we can’t all like the same things. I don’t like Lexx but we have Rescue Me and Breaking bad in common. I’m still willing to try any show 790 suggests because he got me in to Dex and Breaking Bad and he recently ended up liking Rescue me so we still have at least slightly similar taste in TV.

  29. damn man i turn on the last ten minutes of SNL….and what is it i see…that girl Justina Beiber…siging..REPEATING he same line 67346838 times “you smile,i smile” wtf man. ok end of rant :)
