Open Discussion (And Site Commenting Rules) – September 3, 2010

Sep 3, 2010 by

Vic Holtreman of Screen RantAs usual – talk about whatever you like as long as it’s related to movies, TV or Screen Rant itself – just remember to play nice.

On every Open Discussion post I add the note “remember to play nice.” But it seems that on some other comment threads on the site that’s not always the case.

Things recently got very heated on another article on this site in the comments section and that’s going to be the last of it. A reminder of the rules here:

  • No profanity (yes, that includes the s-bomb, which it seems a LOT of people don’t consider profanity).
  • No personal attacks – If you call someone stupid, an idiot or worse, your comment will be deleted. I don’t care if it took you 30 minutes to write and is 500 words long.
  • Trollish behavior/Flame wars – these are NOT tolerated here. On the article I mentioned we let it go further than it usually does, and I regret not nipping it in the bud. If you’re pushing the envelope, you’re well aware of it and I don’t buy the “who me?” defense.
  • Going off topic – I realize that discussions can veer off the original topic of an article, but if things go WAY off track and stay there then it shouldn’t be discussed there. We’re increasing the Open Discussion posts to three a week and that should be plenty of opportunity to talk about items unrelated to specific articles.

There’s absolutely no need to be unpleasant towards each other – it’s completely possible to disagree with one another based on facts or opinions without attacking the other commenter personally or offending each other.

I’ve always prided myself on having the friendliest and most civilized movie website discussion area on the web, and I will not let that be hijacked by anyone, regardless of whether you’re a first time commenter or if you have 1,000 Screen Rant comments under your belt.

Accuse me of censorship, of being unfair, whatever – as far as I’m concerned this site is my house – and when you come into my house you live by my rules. If you can’t or won’t, there are plenty of other movie news sites out there that will let you say whatever you want to whomever you like.

Things have gotten a bit lax, but we’ll be tightening things up again in the interest of making Screen Rant a pleasant place to be, where you can talk about movies and TV without worrying about being attacked or offended.

Sincerely,

Vic Holtreman – Owner/Editor-in-Chief

  1. Nimoy was good as was his character I think it’s the only redeeming factor but Shatner is one of the worst actors I’ve ever seen. His performance along with the cheesy stories and piss poor dialogue made the show suck for me. Yea though Nimoy was great. I certainly respect the guy. Hell as much as I hate the original I respect at least a little with out it I wouldn’t of had the amazing TNG. No respect for Shatner though.

  2. I really regret this but I just started watching The Spartacus show and it was bad. it was like watching the movie 300 but with out any style what so ever also inferior acting not that 300 had great acting. It’s just a really bleh show.

  3. im tired of seeing commercials for The Event, i have no interest in the show

  4. N
by “frys” u mean frys electronics right?!! I love that store! ;)

  5. I would love to get some feed back on this idea….

Honestly… Not all graphic novels lend themselves to instantaneous storyboard optionings (especially the way this Nemesis bid for feature length is playing out) as a well planned and designed movie takes vision with a certain amount of spit on the hands and grease on the wheels that I am just not seeing in this age of ‘unreason’…

Im just not sold on this yet… Here is an example of how a Blockbuster hit featuring Pitt and Depp as a double bill would really work. Let’s have a look at the Lone Ranger screenplay instead….

Imagine Pitt as Custer and primary antagonist in the upcoming Lone Ranger full length feature as a part of finding out that the Ranger is Depp/Tonto’s secret half breed younger brother with an axe to grind as he runs up from Texas following some renegades who killed a band of his ranger friends….

Now there’s a great basis for this rapid play out hero/foil sort of plotline which actually has an actual explanation to show for the founding of the Texas Rangers at about the same time with decent costuming and believable settings in a time when the nation needs to understand a little more about real issues which are tearing us apart like social injustice and racial disparity via class war.

Civil War themes always allow for a huge draw and a post civil war film might even help people to understand what it was like to deal with living in broken times where might makes right and the truly insane were touted as great leaders…. Never mind the frickin graphic novel on this one… get back to the basics and make a good film… Mark Millar needs to look at a bigger audience in my opinion

  6. I haven’t been a regular reader of Screen Rant for quite a while. I’ll check out Marvel movie updates. It seems the type of movie news it not as narrow as it used to be. And I’m known for being a narrow minded person.

I can’t say I’m a fan of the current comment structure. Above me is a long line of comments (as I skimmed) about “Tommy.” I’d think they’d be inset to set them apart as their own discussion but none were. After reading an article–this one about civility–it lands me on the newest set of comments. It was annoying to hit “older comments” over and over. Maybe it changes, like it did in the older format, once I add my own comment…it will use that as a placeholder and when I return, it will bump me to my most recent comment so I can start from there.

What I like is, it seems people here know one another and are familiar to a much greater extent than when I was a regular visitor/commenter. At the risk of sounding like the Romper Room Lady (for the young peeps, it was an indie horror movie), I see Kahless is still swinging his weight around, and 790 is still vowing to boycott things (in this case Kofi things).

A lot of new (or forgotten/re-persona’d) names are here. One that stands out negatively, first impression, is DrSam or something. I suppose I walked willingly into it, but, Vic (and Sam), doesn’t “spoiler alert” regarding Smallville’s new season have a place in the New Improved Rules? “Smallville News” could have just meant, (ex.) ‘the first episode will be a 2-hour event’ without content give-away.

I suppose if I check “notify my of followup comments” I will get ALL possible comments that are added to this entire discussion…or will I just get those replying to this message? (And here is where I suppose the ‘thread’ format comes from…only as good as those who “reply” make it?)

    • Sylar (etc),

I can’t control if people don’t hit the reply button to a certain comment and make it part of an indented thread.

Yes, you will get all comments on a post if you subscribe.

I have no idea what you’re referring to with your Smallville comment. We recently put up a Smallville post that had “Spoiler” in the title and plastered all over the post itself.

The system is what it is. Those who want to be a part of it, do, those who don’t like it, don’t.

  7. Daniel, Big D,,, here’s a real great interview with Shatner. He talks about why he’s a bad actor. Its a pretty good read.

    • LOL..Shatner is one of those that doesnt take himself too seriously.

    • Cheers for that, 790. “It’s now William Shatner’s universe – we’re just living in it.” Classic. I just want to hear how he delivers/murders his lines in $#*! My Dad Says. “You can’t swim. Son, you’re a good athlete but I’ve seen what you call swimming. You look like a slow kid on his knees trying to smash ants,” was one that stood out from the printed page.

  8. @Sylar…

I think the comments section needs to have page numbering that you can jump to. That way if you leave a comment on page 1 of a thread you don’t have to hit the “older comments” button 5 times to get there.

Actually, DrSam is pretty cool in my book. I don’t always agree with him (or anyone for that matter), but he doesn’t seem any more antagonistic than anyone else on this thread.

  9. oops, I mean “board” instead of “thread” at the end of my last post.

  10. @Anthony, page numbering? Please,,,how hard can it be to reply to somebody just by typing there @name.

The commenting part of the site isn’t broken,,, and trust me everytime Vic upgrades the comment section you loose either readers, comments, or both. 8-)

Its running well, I wouldn’t mess with it,,,

    • 790, im lost..page numbering?? wasnt my idea, its fine the way it is lol

    • I think Andy was referring to commenting on threads with multiple pages per se rather than replying to a specific comment. The pre-Disqus system had the ability to jump forward or back more than one page at a time, which would definitely help on the larger threads like the Lost finale and Inception; the latter of which seems to now consist entirely of variations on

      “It was all a dream!”

      “No it wasn’t!

      “Yes it was!”

for page after page, posted by people who (understandably) haven’t gone back to see what’s already been said.

  11. Jessie I met Wayne at a Farscape convention here in Burbank a few years ago. Lucky I’d seen him in interviews or I wouldn’t have recognised him. He looks like an Australian Patrick Stewart. Nice guy!

  12. Big D, I liked the comment about his work on TJ Hooker,,,

    “Oh yeah I was terrible”,,,

    • The best part about TJ Hooker was a young Heather Locklear in a bikini!

      • She held her own admirably alongside the “Shatner rug”!

    • Fair play to him for embracing his terribleness, but I’m sure some of that was a purely practical decision – realising he had no choice in the matter. Part of him probably still to this day doesn’t understand why no one takes him seriously as an actor. “I. Have. Striven. For. Genius. All. My. Life. But I have known failure.” Indeed!

      • @The Big Dentist

Actually, when he was younger, Shatner was a very respected actor, and I thought he did a great job in his “Twilight Zone” appearances. I enjoyed TOS, but TNG is definitely my favorite Trek show…

        • I was thinking more of the post-typecast Shatner, Archaeon. His success as Kirk was a poisoned chalice he’s had to drink from ever since. Must be a blessing and a curse as an actor to find yourself in the position of being defined by one single role or persona, especially if your career could have gone in any number of directions before that.

  13. @790…

What I meant by page numbering was if there are 10 pages of COMMENTS and you want to go to page 5 of those comments, you can jump right to that page. I’m ok with the way the site is now, in fact the whole Disqus timeframe I pretty much stayed away because it was a pain in the tookus. I think the site is fine the way it is, but a little “tweak” to make it easier to navigate the huge comments (such as our open discussions) would be cool.

    • Agreed, Andy.

    • Andy S,

Yes, comment pagination is something that pops up in my brain from time to time but then gets buried among everything else I have going on. I agree that comment pagination would be helpful.

      Vic

  14. Big D, I couldn’t comment on Discus. My Blackberry wouldn’t allow it because it viewed its OS as spam. Go figure,????

    Also,,, (imo)
The ending of Inception was meant to be left unanswered. I’m sure Nolan wanted people talking about the ending. That’s what got me into the theater.

    • I had all kinds of problems with it as well. My point about the Inception thread was that there’ve been some brilliant and insightful posts on there that have simply got lost in the constant forward momentum of others posting without looking back (or being able to look back easily). It’s a self-replicating thing: the more comments are made, the more the same things come up time and again. I think some of the discussion element’s lost in the process.

  15. Gotcha Andy, its just that ive seen little tweaks end up in disaster. 8-)

  16. True Big D, however once a post reaches what 600+ comments all hope is lost.

    Lol,,, ;-)

    • That top ain’t gonna stop!

      • all i know is, im gonna be watching Shatner in !@#! my dad says

        • Could be a car crash, but I’m there!

  17. Has the configuration of the home page changed because the Popular Topic section is missing on mine..Maybe the guys are just refreshing it for a new week.

Just watched Insomnia which was directed by Chris Nolan and it was the first movie of his that I watched that left me disappointed…

The Road with Viggo M…any one else see that yet…bleak, depressing and never truly captured the relationship between the man and the boy the way the author did in the book when I read it..Viggo’s performence was amazing though…He should have won an Oscar by now..

  18. new Sons of Anarchy this tuesday night! yeaa!!

  19. RE: Star Trek tv shows. I enjoyed every single incarnation. If it was Trek, I watched it. Some episodes were better than others, but I thought they did a fair job in all the series. TOS will always be dear to me because it was what got me into Trek in the first place. The reruns in the 70′s and all the novels that came out before TNG was even thought of were what made me a Trekkie for life. While I enjoyed all of the shows in “The Next Generation” universe (TNG, DS9 & Voyager), DS9 was probably my favorite. Sometimes I felt that TNG got a little too “preachy.” DS9 I loved because it showed Trek in a different light. Actually, by the end of the show’s run, Sisko had actually become one of my favorite captain’s in the Trek universe. Surprised the hell out of me, too. Avery Brooks really developed that character and I was REALLY hoping that they would make a movie with that cast. I would be game for another Trek series! Maybe the success of the last Trek film can get Paramount to start thinking of a new tv series. They really dropped the ball with Enterprise. Such potential that show had and they let it slip through their fingers.

  20. Andy,
Although it was the pre-eminent sci fi show when I was a kid, TOS was always so melodramatic (typing that word brought up the cliche Kirk vs. Spock Fight to the Death song in my head. Bah bah bah. ba-ba-ba-ba-ba!)

DS9 is absolutely my favorite. Although they were at a single station, the arc of the series and all the characters were about development and the *journey.* Some of the best acting in all of sci fi history. I loved how the characters such as Garak and Kira grew. And the “full circle” aspect of the prophets/Sisko made arguably more continuity-sense than another arc favorite of mine-Lost.
