the old man says:

What’s the consensus here about Captain America, is it a title or a name? Has a single person been identified with it so long that its lost any possible title status, and has become another name for Steve Rogers. Like Spiderman for Peter Parker.

I’m not sure I understand the question. Of course Steve Rogers = Captain America.

steven the git says:

It wouldn’t be an open discussion if Vic actually remembered. ;)

Same as Tom Cruise must be mentioned in the weekend wrap ups!

JordanD says:

While Steve Rogers was frozen, other men held up the mantle, but they weren’t super soldiers/heroes,they were more like symbols. In the comics, since Steve rogers death, his former sidekick Bucky has been Captain America. So, to answer your question, in a way “Captain America” is a title, but none of those others matter and when anyone talks about Captain America they mean Steve Rogers.

Rob says:

agreed, Steve Rogers is Captain America. Although I do understand your point, the way Bucky took over now, its almost as if Cap America is a symbol.

I wonder how long until Steve Rogers is back in the comics, heh

Gary says:

Issue 50 for the return of Cap I would guess.

JordanD says:

With all the craziness and surprises in Secret Invasion, Rogers will mostly likely return somehow.

Andy says:

To me Steve Rogers IS Captain America, but I really don’t follow the comic books anymore. For the movie, Cap HAS to be Steve Rogers, he can’t be anyone else….even Will Smith. LOL.

Zipper Stevens says:

I thought I would pass along some tech/software suggestions to readers who have mentioned some ads appearing on here (which I recall Vic saying that had already been removed..) For those of you that already know this stuff, just ignore this or share in any tips you have.

I Run FIREFOX 3 with a couple of handy Add-ons.
1. adblockplus (ABP)– I never see a single pop up or slider ad. Run ABP with filterset.g updater and it operates with little user interaction.

2. NoScript is also available but I recommend that for more advanced users. It self updates but when you visit a new site it will stop all scripts by default. Some stopped events are marked with an icon but some background processes that are stopped aren’t noted. You’ve got recogonize when a site doesn’t load everything correctly and remember to tell noscript to “allow” a site.

Nothing against your sponsers either vic. Like I said, I recall that you wrote in response to one of the situations that the ads had already been removed. That reminded me that some popups can originate from the PC itself. I also recommend some free anti-spyware software (Lavasoft’s AdAware or SpyBot S&D 1.5). I have NO investment with either of those companies but I have used them for years now and maintain a healthy surfing experience. Firefox, Adaware, and Spybot S&D can be downloaded from http://www.filehippo.com. Again, I have no stock in them either but they warn you when software had extra addons and differentiate between commercial, trial, and open-source software. The firefox extensions ABP and NoScript can be installed by visiting mozilla.com (developers of Firefox) and clicking on the Add-Ons tab.

I know in the process of this, I derailed this fine captain america thread, so I’ll toss in this question, who should play the villain? Will it be the Red Skull?

I’m down with Steve Rodger’s,,,
He’s the man. 8-)

Also, I watched “Doomsday” on dvd recently, and I have to say it was really good…
Its a total lift on “Escape from NY” , UK style,,, but it was well exicuted, and its a fast paced sci-fi film. 8-)
The cast, story, and locations are all really well done. ;-)

I’m wondering if JordanD is getting at how we view the presidency–it’s held by a man (so far) but it’s also a revered mantle of power. So even those who despise a certain president hold respect for him because they respect The Office.

“Is Captain America a title or just Steve Rogers’ alter ego?” seems to have been answered by Vic. I forgot about Bucky and others who wore The Uniform.

from the people worthy enough to get their commercial onto the iron man DVD.

Zipper,

I do not want to run annoying expanding ads and I remove them when I become aware of them (I don’t approve every ad before it runs, that’s not how it works, and I’ve asked the ad networks to not run them). I also do NOT run ads that have audio by default because I realize those are annoying as heck.

I really do try to find a balance between showing ads and not annoying visitors. I don’t run popups or popunders either because people complained.

But you need to realize that ads pay the bills. If everyone blocked them, you could kiss Screen Rant goodbye – because I can’t put the hours and hours that I put into it plus pay my writers if there is no income generated by the site.

In the end it might actually be a good thing… I’d spend more time with my family.

BRAVEHEART says:

I hear the Fox are starting to talk Dare Devil 2!!!about time too!!!
Other movie that must get a move on is Silver Surfer.Keep seeing on my sons Ultimate Marvel ps2 game, the excellent cartoon stories that run through it with images of Galactus and Doctor Doom etc…and it makes me think that a movie made like this would work big time!

Dan says:

What do you guys think of the news that Warner Bros. plans to re-release The Dark Knight on IMAX in January, just in time for the Oscars? Is that a good move, or is that seem a little shady?

@Dan

We’ll have a post about that hopefully later tonight.

Vic

790 says:

A little shady,,,
Nice word play Dan… 8-)

There doing it for the Oscar buzz, I’m sure WB’wants Heath Ledger to be nominated and this is how they do it.

TDK re-release post is up. :-)

Vic

Dan says:

@790

Thanks! I didn’t even mean for it to be punny, but hey, it worked out.

@Vic

I’ll check out the post.

I was wondering how the heck today’s Open Discussion already has 20 comments, then I realized, “hey, I’ve read all of these before…” lol

I got a question, who here is a fan of Rome? I was just asking vic if he’s heard any updates about the possible movie mentioned by Ray Stevenson. Got any fans here?

790 says:

Don’t worry Ken J, Vic didn’t forget this week,,,,
The new Open Discussion will be up after midnight.

Rome, havnt seen it. Is it good ??? 8-)

790 says:

I stand corrected Ken J,,,,
Holly crap,,,

We have a glitch in the (open discussion) Matrix.

Ken J says:

Rome is EXCELLENT. One of the best tv shows I’ve seen. And it’s completely out of genre for me. I’m usually against historical shows/movies, I tend to like firearms, but this is an exception.

jc in chicago says:

The Speed Racer DVD has been out for a whole day, and I’m going to cry myself to sleep because I don’t have one to put under my pillow.

Gary says:

Still no intrest in Seeing SR .

Hey guys, sorry about the mess up this week… just add to this discussion and things will be fixed next week.

It was late when I was setting this up…

Vic

BTW, I’m going to be giving away copies of the Speed Racer DVD later this week. :-)

“BTW, I’m going to be giving away copies of the Speed Racer DVD later this week.”

What contest in h**l do have to lose to get that one. :)

Ken J says:

LOL @ INK

I nominate 790 and jc for the DVD. :-) They are definite fans of the movie. I’m sure once you’re giving the DVD away for free, all of a sudden people will be coming out of the woodwork and professing their love for the film, lol.

790 says:

Too late I allready purchased the dvd.
8-)

And watched it 6 times.

Bruce Montreal says:

I vote for Richard Simmons to be Captain America. The passion, the bravery, the legs … he already has the outfit …

@Bruce Montreal

What is up with first 5-7 minutes of films? wh want to watch the first 5 minutes than wait weeks to see the rest?

AND the spoilers that are releasted about the first 5 minutest- I don’t watch the fist 5 minutes, and dont want my favorite movies/comic book movie sitest to reavel what happens in a news story…

-I hate Other Spoilers to. Like when Comic book movie – said that were audience ready, and the shock that would happen because of the **** in watchmen.
DAMN you! I on purpose did not re-read(read most of it when I was 10) the watchmen comic so I would not know what happends at all…

kyyle23 says:

How long do you guys think it will be before another Alien flick is made? And is there anyone who feels that another Alien film can be made properly?

Personally, I think if there was any franchise that needed a do-over, this is it. In high school I really enjoyed the Alien book trilogy that detailed Aliens taking over earth and the Humans having to leave earth only to come back and re-take it.

Thoughts?

790 says:

Sure it could be done,,, that perticular concept seems a little done to death, but I’m sure somebodys sitting on an epic Alien script.

Prob is once a great “Aliens script” gets in the hands of the 2008,studio exec he changes it ,,, then finds the cheapest Director to film it.

Ken J says:

The only way to make a good Alien movie now, is if they ignore 3 and 4. They can make a “prequel” type thing where they show the fight those colonists put up against the aliens on that moon where Aliens took place. Of course ending with the final human being killed or taken captive and Newt hiding out.

Or they could do something along those lines as long as 3 or 4 are not counted. Meaning any actual sequel taking place after the events of Aliens should have Ripley, Newt, Hicks, and Bishop alive. And anything we know about the Aliens should be consistent with what we learned from 1 and 2.

790 says:

Well that premise has been done 4 times.
Alien kills ppl, terror,,,
Ppl fight back,,,
Facehugger attack.
Alien queen located. Hero takes out Queen and barly escapes or did she.
Airlock to the rescue.

Yaaaaaaaawwwwwnnnnnn

They need to take the Alien story down a new road…
If they keep going with this Avp crap, it mights as well be Saw 6.

The only way I’d vote for another Alien movie would be if Sigourney Weaver returned with either Ridley Scott (possible) or James Cameron (NEVER gonna happen).

Vic

kyyle23 says:

Vic, seriously go down the road with Ripley again? That dog has to be put down for good. Ridley Scott or James Cameron, yes, but Ripley lived over something like a 400 year span didnt she? Time to move on.

790 says:

The Speed Racer bonus features were great !!!!!!

Very funny.

Ken J says:

Well Kyyle, the only reason why Ripley went on for so long is because of someone’s STUPID idea of bringing her back through DNA. That’s exactly why I said to ignore 3 and 4. Pretend Alien and Aliens are the only movies that are canon. Let’s not even mention the AVP movies shall we?

@790

I may actually keep a copy of Speed Racer for myself and give it another try. :-)

Vic

kyyle23 says:

Ken, I have no problem ignoring 3 through 6, have no fear.

And I have heard the prequel idea kicked around a little bit, but not in regards to how Newt got to where she was when she was found, but rather in regards to the unknown pilots in the original Alien, how they got where they were, and why were they carrying a cargo of Alien eggs.

One part of the series that really got away was the governments involvement in trying to contain and “use” the aliens. Its almost nonexistent in Resurrection, we got a token version of it with the original Bishop in AVP, and I am guessing there is none of it in AVPR(I wont watch it until I am bored 10 years from now and its the only thing on TV).

I still love the “Takeover of Earth” scenario in the books.

kyyle23 says:

And by nonexistent in resurrection, I mean there is nobody pulling strings like the Paul Reiser character. Just basically some scientists trying to whip up some DNA to see what happens, with a token military guy running things.

God that movie pissed me off so much

790 says:

That’s great Vic,,, its really underated ,,, ;-)
Make sure you watch the Bonus feature “Spritle hits the Big Leagues”. Very funny. !!!!!!!

I didn’t realise how many Matrix references were in the film until I watched it again on dvd.
I think they even used some of the props.
Check out the phone in Racers house,,, it looks like the phone Trinity answers in the first scene of Matrix. Also the ring is exactly the same.
There’s a few more references you’ll notice the 2nd or 3rd time around.

There’s also a lot of NWO symbology layered in Royalton and his company.
See if you can spot the Owl,,, nice touch Wachowskies. :-)
