  1. Sitting here at base and I came to wonder about taking a episode of a TV Show and making it into a movie.

Would anyone watch a Movie based on The Outer Limits episode “The Zanti Misfits”?

Reason I asked, that episode was on last night and me and the crew decided to watch it, the young people were scared crapless.

    Thoughts?

    • That was an excellent episode. I’d possibly see the film; it would depend on the story. Do you think they should keep the storyline in the sixties or modernize it? I’d like the film even more if Bruce Dern made a cameo in it.

My father took me to a library showing of that episode when I was a kid, and it freaked me out. I recently gave him a model of one of the creatures. He jokes that he’s leaving it to me in his will. If so, I’m torching that sucker. ;)

      • Give it a modern feel. IMHO

    • I think the “Twilight Zone” episodes “Eye of the Beholder” and “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street” would make excellent (if somewhat philosophical) films…both brilliant pieces in their own rights.

    • Dr. Who’s “Blink” would make a great movie if you could keep it as tight as the original episode.

    • LOST – The Constant

  2. Anyone Watchibg season 3 of Nikita?

I love the direction the show is going and season kicked off at the same if not better tone of great story cool action and great acting. I love going deeper into each character. Hopefully it continues which I think it will.

  3. I watched Captain America TFA over the weekend after not having watched in over a year, and i have to say, I like it more now than then. That was a superb movie with some great acting all around.

    • Yeah, it grows on you. At first I was more than sceptical about Evans, but now it’s my second favorite Marvel movie after Iron Man.

      • For me accepting him as Captain America, I had to get over him as Human Torch.

    • Yeah, I liked it better the second and third time around as well. If the action would be a bit less green screen and more practical, basically like Rocketeer, I would like it even more.

    • Cap:TFA is a movie that gets better over time (like fine wine or something ;) ). I don’t know if the period setting and nostalgic feel might have something to do with it, but I’m sure it’ll be a movie that people will still watch years and years from now.
I like watching it every now and then and it gets better every time for me… it still has its flaws though, but hey! What movie doesn’t.

      • That’s the point. It really gives you that fourties feeling. Something I missed in First Class. It’s set in the sixties, but it doesn’t give you the feeling that it is.

        • I never got any 1940s or WW2 feeling after seeing Red Skull’s super tanks in the first 20 minutes. Along with the lasers, gadgets and overall movie tone.

    • I think if you once get passed the period, then it grows on you, I actually love the movie.

    • Not a fan of that movie at all. As a big Cap fan and WW2 enthusiast it was a real disappointing movie on several fronts.

      • When I first read your comment, I misunderstood what you meant by “WW2 enthusiast”.

        • I was going to write “I am a big Cap and WW2 fan” but that didn’t sound right. And amateur WW2 historian sounded a little too pompous. lol.

      • I found the first half (the pre-serum portion) to be a brilliant period piece. I was sure it would become my favorite Marvel film (and, likely, one of my favorite CBMs). THEN, Steve became Captain America, and the film became hyper-kinetic. After that, it simply became another entertaining popcorn movie to me…and not a particularly distinguished or interesting one at that.

        • What did you expect of the adaption of a comic book that’s purpose was to entertain soldiers in the second world war?

  4. @ jeff w

The only series/ show I can think that I would like to see made into a movie one day would be Arrow at some point. I watched last weeks episode over the weekend, and I have to say, wow. That show is very good. It just gets better every week. Great writing and action.

  5. I’m curious why there is so little Greek mythology movies. clash and wrath aren’t very good. never seen Jason and the Argonauts. I’m reading bulfinchs mythology there is so many stories. in particular perseus and the gorgons

    • There is Immortals

      • I hated that movie lol only really liked troy and 300.

        • They make every mytho movie to be a cgi action fest. their is much more to their stories than that. love, fate ect things that are powerful themes that can be added to a story. yes the stories are going to have some fights. but make it interesting for once.

      • The Immortals is phenomenal. Micky Rourke is excellent.

    • trey… I too would love to see more GOOD mythology-based films (but from various mythologies (Greco-Roman, Norse, Egyptian, Chinese, etc.). Yes, there have been some (and some even entertaining), but there is SO much material that BY ITS NATURE is theatrical and perfect for translation to big-budget filmmaking…again, done RIGHT.

Can you imagine a movie with Anubis, Osiris, and Isis (and Set, of course) perhaps centering on the judgement of the soul of a person that saved millions of lives by committing some seemingly heinous act? Or a non-Marvel, non-SyFy Channel film about the Ragnarok (admittedly, I would also enjoy another film just as much, one based on Odin as described in Neil Gaiman’s AMERICAN GODS)? Or a Hercules film that was NOT animated or 1960s goofy and actually involved Heracles undertaking his Twelve Labors? Or a film involving an adventure of the celestial dragons of the East? Or a serious, non-CGI version of the Beowulf tale or of Gilgamesh?

OR a film bringing deities from various pantheons together for some significant purpose (“Star Trek: TOS” and “Stargate: SG1″ both touched on this idea from a science-fictional perspective, but I’m talking about maintaining the mythological aspects and natures)?

      Ah, to dream…

      • @Archeon you sir know what your talking about. im not overly knowledgeable when it comes to Egyptian mythos or Norse. but I’d love to see some stuff. I really enjoy the story of perseus granted he killed his grandfather via discus throw that caught wind. that’s to silly for s movie.

        • I LOVE mythology :)

    • I’m hoping the Wonder Woman film is more greek mythology than superhero film. Her quest should be based in greek mythology but look like super hero antics to the innocent bystander, if you catch my drift.

      • @securing Neil gaimans American gods I’ve heard of it but not ringing a bell. what is it? And is it worth reading?

        • It’s a great novel that centers on a man who encounters Odin as…a bit different than he’s portrayed in the Marvel comic. It takes place in the modern world, but it captures perfectly the mystery (AND “human” qualities) of the various mythological beings it introduces and features. I highly recommend it.

I also would suggest as a follow-up the entertaining ANANSI BOYS about Anansi the Spider and his offspring (it’s not actually a sequel but does take place in the same continuity as AG). It’s not quite as good but still a great read.

          • Yeah sounds interesting I may pick it up today, since I’m in need of a new book. ill get back to you If I read it. thanks for the recommendation.

            • @archeon is American gods a difficult read? I’m not an avid reader so I’d rather not put myself in a position where I’d just hate.

              • It does have some elements that are relatively complex (not necessarily in terms of concept, but more with regard to the style of writing: Gaiman definitely has a “British” sensibility about humor and writes old school…i.e. very descriptively and with a precise and presumptive knowledge of world myths and legends).

If you don’t like to read a lot, he might not be the best choice for your next book…again, not because of any intellectual obstacle, but simply because he writes with the assumption that the reader will want to become fully immersed and “lost” in the story. I have heard some people say they find him dull or wordy. Gaiman, by the way, is the same guy who wrote CORALINE which became a weird (but IMO, a wonderful) film.

If you ARE interested, I’d suggest first picking up his novel, cowritten with Terry Pratchett, called GOOD OMENS (The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch)…same basic writing style, but hilarious (a lighter story…about the end of the world :) ).

                • Thanks for the tip I loved coraline.

  6. Hey fellow Ranters = ) Just to let you all know i wont be changeing my name to The One Guy Who Liked SKYFALL because the whole world is going to F*CKING LOVE it BEST Bond movie EVER = )

    • i thought QOS was a great film! i don’t understand all the hate it gets around here. am looking forward to skyfall. trailers look great.

  7. finally caught up on watching fringe. started watching heroes for the first time. Im like 4 episodes in and so far i dont really know what is going on. but its ok so far, hope it gets better.

    • The first season was great even though I hate The Nurse Dude. Then season 2 came. And then Season 3 came. And then Season 4 came.

  8. Black Ops 2 trailer with several cool celebrity appearances. Guy Ritche Directed FYI

    • Damn! Groovy!

    • I love COD’s live action trailers… the MW3 one was awesome :D

  9. I saw Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter over the weekend. I was all for this movie after reading the book, but then I heard the film was nothing like the book so my expectations dropped. The book is way better, but name one film that outdoes the book version. And for what it is, the film isn’t as bad as everyone made it out to be. Benjamin Walker does a very decent job as the iconic President. I think that Grahame-Smith’s adapted story would have worked for the film if the director wouldn’t have taken so many liberties with those action shots. The train scene, the horse chase, and other scenes seemed too hokey for me to really enjoy. Timur Bekmambetov’s stlye of filmaking is what ruined that film, and it’s sad because it is an excellent book. Do yourself a favor and go read it instead.

    • its kind of a guilty pleasure for me. it was awesomely bad. but the book is really good.

    • i think LOTR films is better than the books, imo. you asked.

  10. Any Halo fans been watching FORWARD UNTO DAWN Live Action shorts i have been realy impressed with the quality in the first 4 episodes BUT it kind of hit a HUGE Anti Climax when Master Chief turned up ! The costume and voice and movement was just screaming COMIC -CON costume but all the other stuff has been awsome ?

    • I’m waiting until all 6(?) episodes are released so i can watch it in one sitting. But i have heard great things. I’m hoping for a Halo Cinematic Universe one day.

      • That s probaly the best way to do it , it will make a great Halo mini movie all cut together ! Maybe i am being harsh on the Chief i just think they needed to light him a bit better just to obscure that costumey feel other than that though i carnt fault it !

  11. I am currently on standby here. But I figure I share this with all of you.

Check the name of the ship.

    http://www.uscgnews.com/go/doc/4007/1591463/UPDATE-Coast-Guard-responds-to-vessel-in-distress-160-miles-from-hurricane-s-center

    • Hey, thanks for your service, Jeff, and thanks for sharing. Because of Sandy, I’ve got the day off here in Virginia. I hope any Ranters north of me are kept safe throughout this storm.

      • Welcomed $2. However, I enjoy the Coastguard, it has been my life for almost 25 years.

But I have to admit, there are some brave fools out right now, and I am from Philadelphia, my wife is there with her mom and 3 of our 5 daughters, one daughter serves with me here, the other said…Cya Suckers, I am off to Cali!

  12. I almost gave up on Ultimate Spider Man but the last episode (1-hour episode) was actually good; I felt it was the best in the series so far. I may have to keep watching.

    • Are you kidding?! I gave up on that show after 4 episodes. It’s the biggest pile of s**t Marvel has ever released. Thanks to Jeph Loeb. It’s even worse than the crap he has written for thr Ultimate comic books. He should be tarred and feathered for it. And now he’s responsible for getting the Avengers show cancelled after only two seasons.

      • I hear ya’, dude (well, read ya’:-P ). This was the last chance and I thought this last episode was pretty good (start of the Green Goblin). And I totally agree with you on Avengers:EMH; I know the animation needed work but the stories were great. Instead of cancelling it, they should continue it with upgraded animation.

  13. Also, let’s pray (hope) that Sandy does not do to much damage as it slams the East Coast; I’m off work today because of the storm.

    • It is times like this Kahless, why I joined the Coastguard.

Navy, Army, Marine and Airforce may be more glory, but I love my job.

And whats up with a Klingon being afraid of a little old hurricane?

      :)

      • i’m terrified. Here in DC, it’s raining hobbits and ewoks. lol. Had to make a trip to Home Depot and the grocery storethis morning for some quick preparations.

        • checking All State policy to see if im covered

        • I just saw the news about the storm (I had no idea).
My thoughts go out to all of you guys in the danger zone.
          Stay safe.

          • Yeah, just got back in, one of our copters flipped over before we could secure it. Not much damage to the body, but her rotors are fubar

      • Thank you for your service; you’re a true American.

But why did you bring up Klingons and storms?

        Many years ago…

        Here we go!

…in the village of Quin’Lat, a man stood outside the gates before a coming storm! I asked him why he was there, and he said he will not be afraid of a storm! The next day, his body was found dead outside the gates! The storm does not listen to a fool!!

I feel like a fool for listening to that story….for the thousandth time.

        :-D

  14. Speaking with securing about mythos stories. I’d love to see a miniseries based around the 12 labors of Hercules.

    • *Archeon not securing… dang autocorrect.

    • forget the stables, see Hercules tackle my kids rooms

      • Haha you win this round

      • I was about to say something about instead of the 3 headed hydra, he could attack something else but it would have, probably, started a political firestorm. Instead, I’ll say your version is great except, if he tackled my kids rooms, he would probably fail. 8-)

  15. Just watched Skyfall, absolutely loved it!!
