The entire award thing is a necessary evil. I don't often agree with the Academy Awards honors but hey I am not a member of the academy. If you want to see what the people in mass want look toward the peoples choice award. I don't watch that at all. I don't expect the Academy Awards to reflect popularity. I do want the so called Artsy-Fartsy films to be given accolades. God help us if the art of our entertainment is reduced to just what makes the most money.

There is one movie which comes to my mind as being a potential BP nominee; the Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker. Unfortunately, this film came and went during the summer movie season, and it seemed that few people even noticed it.

I was able to see it before it vanished from my local multiplex (it was there for just a week), and it was an excellent film.

I am late.....( Thursday) I just wanted to thank everyone here on SR for a wonderful outlet for Film info, etc. The posters in here are great and no one gets offended if someone disagrees with them...... other sites are too quick to dismiss opinion and are biased when it comes to talent. ( or lack there of) Thank you SR! Top notch!

Like I said elsewhere, a good host would be a great idea.

As for why they televise it, well for the same reason people televise game shows. You may disagree with whatever outcome there is, but you still want to know what the outcome is. And I'm nto saying they don't care about ratings, I'm just saying while they'll try to chase them, they're not going to re-evaluate the very purpose of the awards themselves just to get ratings. Giving the viewing audience the vote would devalue the award entirely.

well then whats the point of having it televised.. hardly anybody cares about the sometimes stupid intermision acts.

By having it televised they are reaching for an audience. And FAILING.

They also plan on rotating the important awards so that they are spread evenly throughout the night.
and they should highlight comedy more from the host.. i didnt watch em but i know billy crystal was a hit, and the one scetch i do remember was his parody of titanic. HILARIOUS.
that part where leo spits off the edge, skips to crystal whos just standing there smiling looking at the ship getting hit in the face with it. lol

This weeks Films viewed by ME!!! I tackled some Korean Cinema this week

1.City of Violence - have seen this about 5 times. I watch it a couple times a year. Have to say this time it didn't do it for me like it has done in the past. Still, some of the most real and terrific action scenes in modern action cinema, hmm maybe it was the laughs that went a bit stale. So I then popped in...

2. The Crying Fist by the same director, Ryoo Seung-wan. I have seen this once. When I first bought it and man I was blown away the second time. Clearly Ryoo's best film starring OldBoy himself!!! What a vesion of Rocky. This is not a Hollywood film with nice and neat endings it will rip your f--king heart out!!!

3. Daisy - From director Andrew Lau (the genius who brought us the Infernal Affairs {only to be shamelessly ripped of by Scorcese) films as well as the Young and Dangerous series)Hot Korean artist chick living in the Netherlands with her Grandpa gets caught in between two bad ass Gungfighters. One a hard boiled interpol agent and one an Assassin for hire. How this guy hasn't done more hollywood besides the crappy "The Flock" is beyond me. This guy does intrigue and action better than anyone in Hollywood by a long shot

4. As a change of pace tonight I will watch The Rutles All You Need Is Cash. In sort of a Python mood, without wanting to go full blown Python

@Firewalker

Films like "Anvil: The Story of Anvil" and "Sin Nombre" likely weren't nominated for best picture because they weren't submitted for those categories. For a movie to be recognised by the Academy for anything, the studio needs to send them a print of the movie with instructions for what category they're submitting it for (so if they were submitting it for the "Academy Award for Best Score", attention wouldn't necessarily need to be paid to, say, the set design). Thus, if they weren't submitted for those categories, it's unlikely they'll be considered.

Also there's a boat load of rules governing what makes a film eligible to be nominated which could interfere.

@Gary

I Think the Academy having 10 nominations for BP is a great Idea.

My complaint is that sometimes great films get over looked because they are released earlier in the year for example "The Hurt Locker" which is deserving of a nod might fall victim because it was released earlier.

My other complaint is that films don't get a BP nod because they fit into other catergories. and if you are a film lover you must agree that "Anvil! The story of Anvil" (documentary) and "Sin Nombre" (foreign) are both deserving of BP nods this year. And Why wasn't "Let The Right one In"
nominated in 2008 for BP for that matter it wasn't even nominated in the foreign catergory

I know others have said that there is not 10 pictures worthy of a BP nod this year. I disagree, I just think they haven't seen enough films. Top of my head I can think ten easy I won't bore you with a list. Hollywood thinks they are saving the best for last because thy know my first complaint is correct.

Sorry, a viewers choice would be very gimmicky and bring down the prestige of the award entirely. I know they're going for ratings, but there's a reason the awards carry such an honour, and it's because it's an award given by their peers. There's already an awards show out there that puts the public vote to the test and awards accordingly, there's really no reason for the Oscars to follow suit just for ratings.

If they want a ratings hike, the Emmy's already showed that a decent host can help with that. I say get Neil Patrick Harris to host the Oscars.

We do about one contest a month on average. It's a lot of work to set up, select winners, gather mailing addresses, etc.

@Kevin S

LOL, nope, sorry. I don't actually dress up for Halloween any more. I think the last time I did was over 5 years ago - shaved my goatee and donned the one-piece uniform and went as Captain Picard. :-P
