Why do directors,producers, and Marvel feel that they have to make a film to trump “The Dark Knight”?
With the success of Ironman, X-men, and the Spiderman movies and the millions upon billions of dollars they have mad for these film Why does marvel feel these other films have been full of fail compared to the bat?
My guess is Oscar buzz. While these movies make ton’s of revenue and give comic book fans more reason to live, they tend to lack a award nomination. I feel that the movies serve their purpose and don’t need to be continually re-booted and re-done. Just keep providing us with entertainment and bring the characters we love to the screen.
That’s my two cents and is always welcome to comment of criticism.
I don’t think they feel their achievements are “full of fail” just because they might not have the fanboy reaction that TDK got so quickly. I’m pretty sure Marvel is not crying over how “badly” Iron Man did, lol.

Totally agree with that. I’m very anti reaching out to the mainstream audience. If they like it, cool, but the target should be the fans, either of the hero or the genres or whatever.
Speaking of Nolan I have just been watching Memento. A fantastic movie. Mind you, can’t find the alternatuve endings, which is annoying.
I personally think Momento is a bit overrated. It’s unique and tells an interesting story, but overall I felt it was pretty overrated. It wasn’t bad, but it isn’t as great as some people make it out to be.
They feel they have to trump TDK because it made over 500 million dollars.
And they want some of that action too.

Yes, it is all about money. The fans only come into play when there are legions of them (Star Wars, anyone?) and they can make ‘em a lot of revenue.

I’ve just now started reading them, didn’t work out as a kid. Got The Invincible Iron Man, The Stand and am getting War Machine and Ender’s Game. Always watched X-Men and Spider-Man on Sat Morning Cartoons… any other suggestions?

Although it also has ridiculous and improbable premises, they make it believable and I am enjoying the series so far. @Heroes: See, that’s the thing, if they made the crap going on with Heroes believable, it doesn’t matter about the improbability of it.

Studios HAVE to reach out to “the mainstream audience” because that’s where the money is. Look at what happened to Star Trek… the fanbase alone can’t support a movie financially (and in Trek’s case even the fans bailed as the movies got worse and worse).
The thing is, if you make a GREAT movie you’ll satisfy the fans AND the mainstream audience AND make a ton of money.
Win-win.

I bought the three disc version of Memento and it says it has three alternative endings on it, but I don’t know which one has it so haven’t found them yet. Grrr.

Steven, I’ve got that 3-disc job as well, and although the box definitely mentions “Director’s Commentary with three alternative endings” I’m damned if I can find them either. I suspect they’re part of Teddy’s lies or only available as tattoos or something…
Vic, I must be one of the few Trek fans who will go to see a new Trek movie no matter what. Every movie since The Voyage Home I have seen on opening day and I have enjoyed all of them. Not that some weren’t up the same level of quality as Khan and TVH, but I found all of them to be entertaining.
Let’s just hope Paramount doesn’t get desperate and ask George Lucas to make a Trek film!! (KIDDING PEOPLE!!!!)
I don’t think Marvel feels at all like a second banana to DC because of TDK. DC has had ONE smash hit in the past 3 years and Marvel has had several (Iron Man, Spiderman franchise, X-Men franchise). I think Marvel is taking the right road in the way they are doing things now and I hope that they keep it up!!

Well there are no alternate endings on the third disc, I know that, and the only easter egg is the ‘backward’ version which I know is on the second disc.
As I understand it the alternate endings are with Nolan’s commentary, but how that works I’ve yet to really find out. I read somewhere you have to turn the commentary on and off and it will give a random ending, but so far I’m getting the same thing each time. Not happy.

Oh, when you go onto audio, it will be a close up of the options. BUt you need to go back to main menu and then back to audio until you get a picture of the body.
Basically keep going on audio until you have a picture where you can see the arms as well, then click left. Wayhey!
There are 2 main problems with comic book adaptations of movies that I see.
The first being the companies want to make money so they attempt to come up with a script that they can bill as a mainstream movie. The problem with this is comic characters (at least the ones that are having movies made) have a loooooooooong history and continuity to them. I think Marvel has really paved the way for a universe to be told on screen. X-men started it with diverging to Wolverine’s origin movie and now with plans to combine all of their single shots into an Avengers live action. If they pull it off (meaning if the script is solid and they leave the camp at home) I think it will usher in a new ear of movies and they way comic adaptations are handled.
The other main problem is too many studio execs try to stray from the source material. Look at what happened to the original Batman series. It started off with the dark look and a bit of an adult edge to it only to wind up a campy children’s series complete with crappy sound effects like “boing”. Then with the extreme success of TDK they’re talking about making the new Superman movie “darker”. Hello? Instead of straying from the original even more drastically how about you write a solid script that doesn’t involve bastard children and lex luthor attempting to sink half of the U.S. (again)
Be original but be true to the source. You can’t tell me that the technology isn’t there to have someone like Supes take on someone OTHER than f’in lex luthor for once. If they can have a knock down drag out fight between Hulk and Abomination they could at the very least have Supes taken on Mongul, or Doomsday, or Brainiac, or Zod, or Krypto even just for the love of jeebus take a break from Luthor for at least ONE movie.
Wow that turned into a bit more of a rant about Superman than I intended but I think you guys get the point. lolol
I think at least one comic book movie needs to be directed by a master (Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppala, George
Lucas, Peter Jackson, Rob Reiner) and then my life will have been complete.

FOLLOW THE MONEY….that’s the only rule you need to memorize in the USA. Big filmmakers, who aren’t doing a movie just to tell a story (i.e.– independent films), are making the films to MAKE MONEY. Why did we get TDK? Why did we get Iron Man (a realistic version)? Because Marvel found out the hard way that you have to put that much serious effort into them, to attract mass audiences, to GET THEIR MONEY.
They don’t care WHAT they end up showing, so long as they think it will make them the money. If they could con us all into watching two hours of a blank screen, and pay for it to boot, they would do it. They don’t “care” about us, or about the material. Case in point, Money Bay, and his Transformers movie: he called it “childish and stupid” at first, until he took the job, directed, and made himself bo-ku bucks. Now he “says” they are the coolest thing ever. Gee SURPRISE!

DON’T SPOIL IN THE COMMENTARY
In an early DVD of Lost, the commentaries for, let’s say Episode 9, totally spoil a development for Episode 14. I mean the death of some characters–no small thing.
Today I’m watching an “Introduction” part of Babylon 5 and they go and drop spoilers into the commentary of the very first DVD of that year’s set.
WHAT is with this? Obviously the writers or producers sit down and create the comments at the end of the season. But it’s for a DVD set that is watched sequentially. ARGHHHH! Now obviously an episode commentary will refer to things in that episode (like at the end).
The assumption is that the viewer watched the show first (duh) and then the commentary. Fair enough. But some of those program comments have spoiled me for stuff way down the line–in B5’s case, I think commentary in Season 1 started telling me about the entire 5 year arc! I wanted to throttle someone!

On October 15th, 2008, Andy said, “Let’s just hope Paramount doesn’t get desperate and ask George Lucas to make a Trek film!! (KIDDING PEOPLE!!!!)”; how might Georgie-boy “improve” Trek, given that he writes great action scenes, but sucky non-action/dialogue-focused scenes?
1. Phasers are replaced by “phaser-swords”.
2. Kirk is cured of his “every…word…ia a…separate…sentence” delivery by being assimilated by the Borg, his head covered with an ominous black mask to match his new uniform.
3. Spock mind-melds with a small green pointy-eared, Muppety-looking alien and takes on its disjointed manner of speaking: “Logical, this is not; reckless, is Kirk-Captain!”
So much of movie making is based on a manufacturing model, the question begs to be asked. How do you use quality control methods to improve story?

George Lucas was just someone i thought of, and Rob Reiner because he can make quarky comedies(stand by me, princess bride) that are still great movies.

I just want to get this off my chest…here in Scotland we have a big daily news-paper called The Daily Record and they reviewed The Incredible Hulk dvd at the weekend and gave it….2 stars!!!???!!!2 bloody stars!!!
I bought it and watched it all over again and really loved it,as a Hulk fan this movie just rocks…but I know it had a lot of negative build up to it’s release in the summer there and after Iron-Man getting all the praise I’m sure it was more just lack of hype that made critics write some crappy reviews.
Great movie,great director,actors,effects…the lot!
Now can’t wait to see ol’green-skin show up in The Avengers Movie!!!
