  1. I’m not American either, I’m just saying, it could be an issue with some people if he isn’t. It’d suck because as I said, there are some great actors for the job, but the studio may think it’d be best to go for an American actor over anyone else.

  2. @vic
i forgot to put the @vic part in my earlier post but anyways have you seen ” Law Abiding Citizen”…?

  3. Only if Canadians won’t mind a character named Canada Man or Maple Leaf Man to be played by an American, or if Iranians wouldn’t mind someone iconic in their culture to be played by someone from Israel, etc. etc. etc…

Funny, I was just having a conversation about how it’s “wrong” to want Americans to be things or want to drive American cars… Yah, we’re being bigots and isolationists if we want an American to play Captain America…

  4. @Ken J

To be totally fair, Wolverine is supposed to be Canadian (and probably the most famous comic-book Canadian) and was played by an Australian. Did the World end because of it? I can see why people would prefer Cap to be played by an American but can’t see why it would be a deal-breaker if he wasn’t.
As long as he was the right person to play him then would it really take the suspension of disbelief too far for him to not be American (as opposed to un-American which to me are completely separate things)?

  5. @Jago

Yes, I saw Law Abiding Citizen. I have to crank out that review and Where the Wild Things Are tonight.

It was pretty good for the most part but feel apart at the end for me.

    Vic

  6. While I don’t think it’s technically a necessity to cast an American as Cap, I do think that not casting an American should be the last option and should only be sought out if there is not one single American actor who can pull it off well. That being said, there has to be an American actor who can pull it off, and I’d prefer an unknown because the current famous actors out there are either too old or just not the right fit for the role IMO. Also, it’s sort of stupid to say that someone who is unknown doesn’t have the acting ability to pull it off, being unknown doesn’t mean you don’t have the talent, just means you haven’t gotten your big break yet. :p

  7. @the old man…

Peter Youngblood Hills “Band Of Brothers” for Cap sounds like a pretty interesting idea, and it just might work.

    @Vin…

Avatar will have a good opening during its first weekend, but Christmas Day will be another story, because not only do you have Sherlock Holmes, but also The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and Up In The Air going into wide release on Christmas Day, along with the Alvin & The Chipmunks sequel, and the romantic comedy It’s Complicated.

Christmas Day will be a major movie traffic jam, with — quite literally — something for everyone. Don’t know whether the huge amount of new releases will dilute Avatar’s audience or not, though.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that Avatar will hang onto the number 1 spot on Christmas weekend, but its box office tally for that weekend will be rather narrow, considering the competition it’ll be going up against.

“Funny, I was just having a conversation about how it’s “wrong” to want Americans to be things or want to drive American cars… Yah, we’re being bigots and isolationists if we want an American to play Captain America…”

Well, for me that’s a rant all on it’s own (but unfortunately, not a screenrant so I won’t do it here (see what I did there?)), but it’s very true. People shouldn’t care. They do though.

Hell, I remember when Batman Begins came out I read some complaints that the guy was no longer driving an American car… yeah that conversation was had somewhere. Annoyed the hell out of me, last I saw Batman certainly wasn’t a symbol of the American dream or whatever and his car was never any kind of statement of patriotism.

    Gah, sorry, mini rant.

  9. @Jordi

That’s different, he’s just a character that happens to be Canadian. He’s not like initially developed as a symbol of the Canadian spirit or something. I mean, his NAME is Cpt. AMERICA, there really shouldn’t be any room for interpretation. He is like a symbol of Patriotism and all of that stuff that people now call “dorky” and politically incorrect. That’s like having a non-American play for America in the Olympics. And yes I know that happens, now they only care about winning, they don’t even care about the national pride that it’s supposed to uphold…

  10. It’s a freaking movie, not a statement about national pride or patriotism. IF the best choice to play Cap is an American, Canadian or German, who CARES as long as they do the part justice. Sheesh. Heck, if Arnold Schwarzenegger can be the GOVERNOR of California, than a Canadian can PLAY Captain America in MOVIE.

  11. Ah the blind patriotism. Ken’s concerned that Cap America won’t be American when our own “president” isn’t even a citizen… Comical, nice to see we have priorities and damn it! were sticking to them !!!

Andy, Arnolds really just playing the Governor. Oh and what a great performance. (Sarcasm)
Obama on the other hand deserves an Oscar for best actor. Really a dynamic performance.

  12. @Andy S

Oh ok, so if it’s not ok with you, then I guess I’m required to change the way I feel so I’m more like you. Alright. Don’t worry, I’ll ask you for permission the next time I have an opinion on something to make sure it’s ok with you. ;-)

  13. I think what Andy was pointing out Ken was that your opinion was kinda lame.
Kinda like when you call out other people on their opinions that you consider lame.
    Lol, big grin emoticon,,,

  14. Really? I thought I’ve always been an advocate of people having their own opinion and call people out when they insult other peoples’ opinions… strange… And I don’t really know what to make of your whole pseudo wannabe witty stuff, is it funny? is it not? I don’t know, I guess it’s up for interpretation… ;-)

  15. @Vic

Oops, didn’t read that the first go around, so is Law Abiding Citizen worth the money to watch it in the theater???

  16. @the old man

Peter Youngblood Hills “Band Of Brothers” for Cap could be good. Also, he is smaller and could work out and get bigger for the transformation to Cap.

I don’t really remember him from Band of Brothers though (it has been awhile). But he definitely looks like an authentic WWII era soldier in BOB, so we know he can do that part. Can he carry a film? Dunno. Has he been in much since then?

As far as look goes, I am definitely a yes. Not sure about anything else.

  17. @Andy S

To me, the point is that it would be pretty pathetic if they CAN’T find an American actor to play the role. A female movie journalist friend of mine recently asked why aren’t there any macho leading American actors? It seems if you want a “real man” actor you have to go to Australia, Scotland, Ireland, etc.

I’d rather see an American play the role.

    @Ken J

I just posted up my review of Law Abiding Citizen. :)

    Vic

  18. First of all, Ken J, where did I call you out specifically? I was talking about the conversation in general. If you want an American to play Cap, that’s your opinion. But say Colin Ferguson gets the role. Are you NOT going to go see it just because he’s Canadian? Be a damn shame to not see a potentially great film because the actor’s lineage isn’t what you want. I just want them to get the RIGHT actor for the part, regardless of country of origin. And that’s MY opinion.

Oh, and this board has been leaning so far right lately I have had to put a support against my monitor so it doesn’t fall on the floor. I happen to think Obama is the right man for the job and is ALOT better choice than having a senior citizen with a heart condition in the White House. 8 years of Republican rule did ALOT to ruin this country (Patriot Act anyone?), so the Repubs now should shut their traps and give the Democratic programs a chance to work.

  19. @Vic

Yep, thanks, just finished reading it, a little disappointed to hear about the end not being good. With a movie like this I would expect some really crazy spectacular ending that will leave you talking about it right after leaving the theater…

And you can’t say that about having an American actor, god forbid! You are not politically correct and you’re being closed minded! Shame on you! lol

  20. I think you’re being WAY to sensitive, Ken.

  21. @Andy S

    LMAO, you’re joking right?? :-D

Anyway, maybe they’ll make a biopic about Obama and they’ll have a white guy with make up play Obama, but don’t worry, he’ll be really good, he’ll be “right” for the role, so no worries man. It’s not like they are making a statement that they can’t find a black man good enough for the role or anything…

  22. I’m being too sensitive? I personally think this conversation has turned pretty funny, haha, hey it’s better than being all serious and crap, trying to talk seriously about politics only leads to fights, better to just take the humor in and don’t get too caught up in it. :-)

  23. Good thing we don’t have a senior citizen in the President’s office because he’d be screwed under the upcoming health care plan. Oh, wait, the Washington elite have their OWN health care plan – different from what they want to give the little people.

    Vic

  24. Old republican or a race card actor, it doesn’t matter who’s “running” things because they don’t run things…
    ^
Ken your getting all bipolar again,,,

  25. Eh, John McCain is a liberal conservative anyway, I’m glad Obama won, Democrat in office, Democrat controlled congress, country getting worse every week, I find it entertaining to watch people try to find creative ways to still blame Republicans. Literally, watching the news is hilarious to me. :-D

So, how about we have Robert Downey Jr. play Obama? He’s a good actor, he’ll be “right” for the role.

“I’m a lead farmer mother #$@#%@$#!!” Man I have to see that movie again… lol

  26. If you say so 790. Again, is it funny? Is it not? I can’t tell… I’d rather you just be funny, but lately your statements have been pretty stale and desperate sounding… Oh well, I’ll get my entertainment when I turn on the news…

  27. Hey Andy there’s a touching HBO special on Obama next month for his fans. ;-)

Well yeah Ken the media is a tool used to keep people like yourself distracted from what’s really going on.

You don’t seem to mind the entertaining news. Most of the dumbed down population is the same way…
More people are concerned about who’s got the most votes on “Dancing with the Stars” then what’s going on with their freedoms. Most just blindly trust the leaders as the leaders lead them down the road to ruin.
Do you really think this economic downturn is a big accident?
    Its all engineered.

  28. So (sorry to flog this horse, my curiosity is just piqued) would an actor not born in America but naturalized, with citizenship, American wife, kids, mortgage etc. be American enough to play Cap?
