It’s Wednesday so it’s time for our weekly open discussion post. Talk about whatever you like as long as it’s related to movies, TV or Screen Rant itself.

Not to hijack the thread, but since most of you who comment here are regular readers, I have a question:

Would you be interested in a comment system that was threaded (indicates more clearly who is replying to whom), the ability to have avatars and “scoring” (thumbs up, thumbs down) of comments? Let me know!

  1. I kind of like it the way it is .
    Its more informal.

  2. Yeah, I agree with Gary. Besides I’m too old to be adding bunches more complication. I’m already getting senile.

  3. I watched bond today, but no Star trek or watchmen trailer… australia sucks!

  4. I’m with Gary and the old man on this as well. It takes me long enough to hunt and peck a comment as it is, add anything else and I’ll be posting a day late.

HOLY COW! The number of “Trek’ posts! You were right, Vic. Trekkies are perverts for details and cannon. I was a Trekkie before there were Trekkies and conventions, but I was never at the level that seems to be demonstrated here. Star Trek will be box office success if for no reason other than the furor that Star Trek fans generate will get the movie going crowd curious. I sure hope the film delivers. In spite of all the ‘off cannon’ changes, I would still love to see a new slew of Star Trek films in theaters.

  5. I’ve been a regular reader for a while, but haven’t commented so far (although I did write to you a while back, Vic, and told you how much I enjoy your site since I moved to Australia).

I like the format as it is; anything else would be more like a forum, which I think would go off on too many tangents over time (IMHO).

Thanks for being one of my main sources for news on movies that interest me.

re: Australia — I don’t know about other countries right now, but, although I really want to see the Bond movie, I’m a little put off by having to pay about $17 to see a it. The last film I caught at the theater was Batman. I simply can’t afford to go that often.

  6. I agree with everyone else. Keep it the way it is, it is much easier to read. Avatars may be cool, but not necessary.

  7. @Edmund

Thanks for reminding me that the $7.50 I pay, in comparison, is not a WHOLE lot to see a movie in a theater.

And I like the informal nature here as well. And as someone else said typical forums get a little off-track at times.

  8. Let me add an “I like it the way it is” as well. The @ takes care of the threads IMO.

Not sure what to talk about this week. The usual Heroes sucks comes to mind (though most of the scenes between Elle and Gabriel were good). At least it was better than last week.

I haven’t watched Fringe yet. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King dropped last week so I’ve been spending a lot of time leveling my gnome Death Knight so I haven’t had a chance to watch Legend of the Seeker or True Blood either. heh. Didn’t get to see Quantum of Solace (plan to this weekend). What did you guys think of it?

  9. Evie:

Now you’re talkin’ my language. I got Wrath at midnight on Thursday morning. The Death Knight opening questline is crazy good and I think DK’s are a little Overpowered, but thats why they are so great. I only got out of the starting area then started leveling my priest through Northrend. 74 and still going. So far the questline that involves Bolvar Fordragon in Dragonblight is the best I have seen in the game. Amazing! I still cant believe Nyhm (I think thats his name) dinged 80 in 27 hours!!

  10. Hey Vic,

Keep it the way it is is my vote.

I like the option for email follow-up.

I am a Watchmen freak, went to Quotient of Shite to see the trailer…no deal…

Kinda meh on Star Trek, don’t think it will be a Star Trek movie but a JJ Abrams movie. Looks slick though.

Just heard about HeMan, hope it works.

Also, I like the Narnia movies and they are gearing Cap to be real kid friendly, I was hoping for a little more realistic tone, maybe Red Skull and lots of Shield. Lets see.

Can’t wait for Watchmen though, reading it again right now.

    Regards,

    Larry

  11. @Evie

While Niall here loved it (he gave it a great review) I *hated* the way the action scenes were shot. Bourne-style but far more incomprehensible with two camera cuts per second which were not fluid as far as guiding the viewer through the action.

    Vic

  12. Just to give you an example of the comments format, you can go here:

    http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/11/18/alice-in-wonderland-not-being-shot-in-3d/

Although I’m getting a pretty clear signal. :-)

    Vic

  13. Yeah, not a fan of that style. I feel like I have to post multiple times to address many posters if I need to. Thats just me though :-)

  14. @Doom
Haha, my priest is also 74! And I got the midnight release as well :P My DK is 63. Yes, very overpowered. Well the 27 hour thing doesn’t surprise me really. He likely had his whole guild AoE grind him to 80 and they probably knew what to do via Beta keys.

    @Vic
Thanks! Seems Medved was saying the same sort of thing about the action scenes.

And the threading… I like just going to the last one and then down. I don’t know if I’d like having to scroll through to see if something new has been added (even though I get email updates). I would, however, like a bookmarked link in the email that takes me to the actual comment that was sent to me rather than having to find it. Although it is a minor inconvenience and one I can live with :D

  15. That is a good point on the link taking you straight to the post referenced, I think thats a great idea.

    Evie:
Appaently it was him, a healer and a Mage friend. The Healer and Mage werent in group and the Mage only ported him to and from his destinations and major cities for training. He didnt loot anything (which is rediculous), and he stayed in one place for all 10 levels. Its a place in the Grizzly Hills where the guys respawn like crazy. they hotfixed it now though so they dont give XP anymore. I have a guildmade who has his DK to 68 and he is going to be awesome in raids with Horn of Winter.

Man, as if a site about Sci-Fi/Comic Book movies couldnt get any geekier ;-)

  16. Hey vic,

I’m kind of a message board purist myself (keep it simple) but I actually like slashfilm’s threading. Maybe you could setup one conversation where we could try it out…

  17. Hey Vic
Glad to hear your not in favor of the shaky cam quick cut editing style of Quantom. I too hate this type of filmaking. I didn’t like the last two Bourne films and Im really disappointed that the creative team behind Bond would ape this style. Its just not an enjoyable experience for me. I might be in the minority but I think also think Daniel Craig played the character way too cold and that will really divide audiences going forward if he dosen’t lighten it up, at least a little!

    Chuck

  18. @Doom
Wow, pretty impressive. I know there is that mine where there are a million mob respawns. Was driving my priest nuts. Yeah, Horn of Winter is nice.

    @Zipper
Perhaps implement it but give the user the option to select between the 2 formats?

    @Vic
Just reread your question. Not a fan of the scoring at all. Seems too much like a popularity contest. And if they are out of line, you usually take care of that yourself.

  19. I wouldn’t change a thing as far as the commenting goes Vic,,,

It might be cool to have Gravatars enabled???

And somebody’s got to figure out how to get that happyface with the blood (Watchmen) icon up there. 8-)

  20. Wouldn’t mind avatars, but thats about it. Don’t change anything else.

  21. I think avatars give a bit of personality myself. Thats why I like the idea.

  22. Are Avatars those little pictures by your name.
I thought those were called gravatars?

  23. Tomato, tomahto. :-) I think gravatars are kind of a brand name.

    Vic

  24. Avatars added, hope you guys like having that as a feature. :-)

    Vic

  25. Cool…
    That’s me the robot head…

  26. My Avatar won’t show. I wonder if its a case sensitive thing. Trying this post with all lower case to see if it works.

  27. nope :-(

  28. Vic, I love the new features for the site.

And a threaded comment system along with scoring would be great. :-)

  29. I don’t know if gravatars follow you around then essentially don’t they monitor your surfing?
