It’s Wednesday so it’s time for our weekly open discussion post. Almost forgot this week!

Talk about whatever you like as long as it’s related to movies, TV or Screen Rant itself.

  1. I’m a die hard terminator fan and im just wandering what peoples views are on the new concept art and the overall vibe of where TS is going. Also i’m wandering if anyone has any info on how many of the new bots were created by the late Stan Winston.

  2. I am absolutely fed up with Heroes… thank God to those who got shafted for the poor story development choices that was made for the show. This week’s episode starts out good, great lead-ins into painting pictures of the past, but the so called “surprise ending” of the episode is beyond crap and retarded. If this shows goes anywhere good anytime soon it will be a miracle… yet users on tv.com can seriously tell me that they don’t know why people are complaining about season 3 that it’s the best season yet… I must say… I can’t help but wonder the age of those reviewers… season 1 had depth and twists, season 2 had decent development and depth with some obvious twists that aren’t necessarily all bad… some bad choice in new characters and how they get mixed into original characters’ story arcs but that is really the only issue with season 2, season 3 is like a “where’s Waldo” game with only one character on the page, and it’s waldo: no depth, no development, just fancily folded paper planes doing the same thing the simple ones do only poorer. Season 3 would be something I would expect Hollywood would do when they attempt to capitalize in a good first movie with a sequal, (much like how Saw’s running their show… or AVP).

Like I said last week, Arthur Patrelli has no limit and NO explanations to his stupid line of powers. He has abilities that make no sense and the story is being brought about to retarded levels.

I am disgruntled because I had such high expectations for this show… this is absolute disappointment.

  3. Heroes was dropped from the rotation after the third episode.

Chuck continues to be the best show that more people need to watch.

Loving all the new Star Trek related material that has been released this week.

  4. @Liam

I’m going to have to disagree with the firing of Jeph Loeb and Jesse Alexander. Variety says they ran the day-to-day production and were not writers. Which, I think, should be the other way around. Loeb is a great writer, four Eisner awards to prove it, and Alexander’s work on Lost was pretty commendable. Being over a 4 mil. budget is unforgivable, true, but the guilty party in this fiasco is the sole-writer and creator, Tim Kring.

I’d write a letter to him to get your show back. I had expectations, but without Loeb, it’s not worth the investment.

  5. @ Will

I don’t know, like someone else has already said, I think it suffers from the same thing the Star Wars prequels suffered from, how the technology seemed more advanced in the prequels which was supposed to have happened before the originals. In the original T1 and T2, you see the flying hunter killers, which were not curvy at all, they looked ugly and functional, same with the big tank-like things, ugly and functions, very square, not curvy or anything like that, then we had the “infantry” type T-800 endoskeletons walking around. Now we have weird water creatures, huge harvester things, motorcycle terminators… I don’t know, it seems like technology went backward, meaning it seems more advanced in this prequel than it did in the original.

I guess we’ll have to wait for the full trailer to see.

  6. @Will

As I’ve mentioned here previously, I’m not bashing this unless something comes up that I think is stupid. No, I don’t like a couple of the Terminator concepts (snake-thing, motorcycle) but I think they have the right take on this based on what I’ve seen (at Comic-Con) and heard.

    Vic

  7. Soooo…ummm Vic,

    Heheheh

Gonna spoil that trailer for us Friday?

    Regards,

    Larry

  8. LOL, you DID ask that before, didn’t you… :-P

I’ll post up the Watchmen trailer as soon as it’s available online.

    Vic

  9. Haha

    More than a couple times!

Maybe even twitter it witha spoiler desc.

Just found out Ryan Gosling will not be Hal Jordan. That kinda sucks in my book.

Opens the door for Nathan Filion? Probably not but that would be my geek dream. Maybe Don Draper?

I don’t know, what do you guys think, who should be the Emerald Emirate?

    Regards,

    Larry

  10. Heroes is also on top of my mind as well. I don’t know what the heck happened. I haven’t even watched this week’s ep. I read a summary and I think that is enough.

Fringe on the other hand I still love. Even caught a glimpse of the Observer! The Bishops are fantastic.

Saw the first season of Dexter. Loved it. Waiting on the Season 2 DVDs from Netlix :D

  11. Will,,, it looks like Transformers/Robotron has had an influence on Mcg’s cyborgs…

Unlike Vic, I bash concepts all the time… So far NOTHING has impressed me with the T4 photos, Mcg has released…

  12. @Will

The late, great Stan Winston died at the completion of Iron Man and at the beginning of Terminator: Salvation. He was to work on Jurassic Park IV after that but was taken from us.

‘Major Drag’ is an understatement indeed.

History will set him alongside the likes of other FX legends such as: L.B. Abbott, Ub Iwerks, Ray Harryhausen, and Roy Arbogast just to name a few.

In my opinion, from having closely watched his career for the last 35 years he had just hit the straight-away and shifted into high gear when he died.

    He was my Hero.

  13. Jess, I have to agree with you %100,000 on Stan Winston. I’m guessing his passing is also why there will be more CGI scenes in Iron Man 2. When your work cannot be duplicated by one person and it takes a team of special effect artists and 3D animation to replace you, then you’ve left the industry at a huge loss.

  14. Just fyi,,,
“Son of the Beach” vol 2, is out on dvd…

  15. Actually zipper, Iron Man 1 was almost all CGI as well. They originally wanted to use more practical shots, but found that the CGI simply looked more fluid and ended up replacing almost all of the shots they did with the practical suit with CGI. But they did say that having the practical suit there in the shot gives a very good light, shading, and reflection reference and probably helped with the CGI process. I won’t be surprised if they reuse a lot of the practical suits from the first movie in shooting the sequel.

  16. In the ever-stimulating world of “Anybody With a Dime and a Dollar Bill Can File A Stupidly Groundless Lawsuit”, we bring forth our latest contestant: Mayor Huseyin Kalkan, of a small oil-producing town in Turkey, who has filed suit against The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros., the studio behind the Batman films.

    Why?

He’s looking for a cut in the film’s royalties in exchange for using the city’s name without permission…the city of Batman.

Here’s the story, as reported by Gina Serpe of E! Online:

    “Batman’s Latest Archenemy: Batman

Wed Nov 12, 10:41 am ET-It may be more the provenance of Superman, but this time it’s Batman who’s entered Bizarro World.

Following the Joker, the Riddler, the Penguin and Two-Face in the Caped Crusader’s pantheon of sworn nemeses, Batman is now set to face off against none other than…uh, Batman.

The mayor of Batman, a small oil-producing town in Turkey, has filed suit against The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros., the studio behind the record-shattering blockbuster, looking for a cut in the film’s royalties in exchange for using the city’s name without permission.

Which begs the question of where hizzoner has been the past 70 years.

‘There is only one Batman in the world,’ Mayor Huseyin Kalkan said, per Variety. ‘The American producers used the name of our city without informing us.’

In addition to the name share, Kalkan claims the emotional distress that apparently comes from having one of the most indelible superheroes share a moniker with your town has led to several unsolved murders and a high suicide rate.

A WB rep, meanwhile, says the studio has seen reports of the legal action in the media but have yet to receive any court papers.

    Holy nutjob, Batman.”

Big Question: Where was this guy when Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, and George Clooney wore the Batsuit?

  17. TERRIBLE news about Gosling not being Jordan.
It was the first time I was Psyched up that GL film might FINALLY HAPPEN.
    Dissapointing beyond words.

  18. Wikipedia gives us this on the little town of Batman:

Batman (short for Batı Raman Mountains) is the provincial capital of Batman Province, Turkey, also known as Êlih or Iluh in Kurdish, is a city on the Batman River in the predominantly Kurdish southeast of Turkey.

    Government
The mayor of Batman is Hüseyin Kalkan, who is a member of the Democratic Society Party, a Kurdish political party.

    Economy
Batman Province is an important oil producing area, and Batman has Turkey’s oldest refinery, established in 1955. A 494 km (307 mi) long pipeline transports crude oil from Batman to İskenderun. The railway track at nearby Kurtalan connects the city with Istanbul. There is also a regional airport near Batman.

    [edit] History and demographics
Until the 1950s, Batman was a small village. When oil companies moved in and the city’s economy started to grow, population figures began to rise. Many Turkish workers and state officials settled in the city. Presently the population of Batman faces a high level of unemployment.”

The late artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger must certainly be doing a Mach 7 spin in their graves…

  19. I saw that on the news last night and couldn’t believe it. Isn’t it true that you can’t copyright a name?

Although agree, you would think the city would be sueing when the Schumacher movies came out!

I remember some years back when Victoria Beckham, Posh Spice, tried to actually copyright the word Posh! Moron.

  20. If I had an address to send it to, I’d show you my PhotoShoppy Response to the idea of this lawsuit; do you have a MySpace account?

  21. @Larry (and everyone else)

You’re in luck on the Watchmen trailer – it’ll be online tonight at 5PM PST and I’ll be posting it here as soon as I can.

    Vic

  22. Thanks Vic,

Sucks though since my home CPU just fried on me.

I’ll have to wait an hour after work…..

Oh, what I will do for Watchmen…!

    Hehehehe

    Regards,

    Larry

  23. Ya know I read that story on the frivolous batman lawsuit and then (like WB) I moved on,,,

I guess it just goes to prove that ANYTHING with Batman attached to it gets ppl talking these days. Gheesh…
I swear if GM started to customize their new cars with the batman logo they wouldn’t need federal bailout.
    (I Don’t get it?, wgas?)

  24. I heard about the Batman lawsuit on Reelz last night. I think I fell of my bed la

It just sounds like the little town of batman, Turkey is looking for some cash. If you looked up pathetic in the dictionary you would find their name under it.

  25. sorry ment to finish that paragraph. I meant to say that I think I fell off my bed laughing.

  26. Good to be back. :D My PC had trouble and took WEEKS to be fixed but I’m back. :D

    OK….open discussion…where to start….

OK. Wall E. Wall E sucked. It was, IMO, the worst PIXAR flick of all time. Great animation, but great animation doesn’t make a great movie. Somebody needs to make a video of Johnny 5 slapping him around. Kung Fu Panda is the animated movie of the year.

Moving on. “Few of my favorite things” is NOT a Christmas song!!!!

Continuing….That Batman lawsuit is some bulls***.

I’m cool with Rohdey being recast in Iron Man 2.

Anyone else looking forward to the new Batman: Brave and Bold cartoon on Cartoon Network?

The Dark Knight – Why didn’t Bats just blame all the Two Face chaos on the Joker? That wasn’t as badass I guess…

Anyone else hear Grant Morrison talking about how he’s involved with The Flash film the other day? Methinks he may be involved with it as a writer, which, IMO, would be great. He’s a huge Barry Allen fan and would definitely do The Flash justice on film. How about that recent article in which Shawn Levy talked about why he was removed from The Flash as director – Unbelievably, his take on the film would have been much more serious than the way WB wanted to go, which, apparently, is to do the film as a LOL comedy. After all, David Dobkin, director of WEDDING CRASHERS and FRED CLAUSE was brought on board almost immediately after Levy left. Here’s hoping someone saves The Flash….perhaps Morrison is that someone.

The new Star Trek flick is my most anticipated film of 2009.

Too bad Ryan Gosling passed on the GL role: http://twitter.com/elmayimbe

The Spirit still looks like a turd.

and….I’m done for the moment. :p

  27. @Kel

I gotta disagree with walle being the worst pixar film. I personally thought it was great movie but I really didnt like Kung Fu Panda. I just personally thought it was dumb but im prob one of the few who think that. And the whole TDK thing they have to make it dramatic, its holleywood :D

  28. Wasnt Kung Fu Panda a Dreamworks release ?

  29. @Gary

Yes, Kung Fu Panda was a Dreamworks film. I liked it better than Wall-E BTW. That’s not to say it was the “better” film – just that I enjoyed it more.

    Vic
