I would’ve hoped that Terminator Salvation would be doing better. A lot of people are saying Salvation makes them miss The Sarah Connor Chronicles even more. I’m gong to see it this weekend and I’m sure I’ll enjoy it just the same. I still miss Sarah Connor though.
I was watching “Iron Man” tonight and its so clear how great writing and great casting can really deliver a great film, and allow the viewer to overlook any unrealistic moments or plot holes…
Sure Stark wouldn’t have survived in real life but the script was so well written and acted that you loose yourself in the amazement of it all,,,
Terminator Salvation, is the complete opposite of Iron Man…
Ok, I know nobody cares, but why in the hell is it that for the last freakin week, no matter when I turned on my tv to Discovery Channel, Deadliest Catch is on?? Seriously, are they playing that 24/7?? EVERY DAY I turn on my tv, one of the first channels I flip to is Discovery, and for the last week, no matter what time of day it is I turn my tv on, Deadliest Catch is on Discovery, EVERY TIME… What is it some kind of marathon? So annoying… I’m hoping to catch (no pun intended) Dirty jobs, mythbusters, time warped, anything…
Hmm, I just realized my list of recent watched movies, from the last three years, can be thought to be pretty pathetic. They’re mostly superhero and/or robot/sci-fi films. Can anybody recommend to me a movie that’s none of these that’s good from the last 3 years?
Besides Slumdog Millionaire, I did see that one and loved it.
Personally Salvation feels kind of uneeded. We know what happens and the film isn’t really more than another war movie just with the word Terminator tagged on.
Oh yeah, watched X-Men Origins, didn’t like it, same problem I had with Van Helsing, it rushs through the plot events and makes it hard to care for characters when they appear for about 1 minute.
Scarily my favourite film of 2009 is Angels and Demons (I don’t count Taken cos I saw it in 2008)
Phil if you want some good non CGI fest toy commercial action movies try Shooter, Rambo, Shoot ‘Em Up, Bourne flicks, Crank, Death Race, Smokin’ Aces and Taken.
Some excellent quality films, with story, character, acting and themes try Children of Men, The Departed, Blood Diamond, Zodiac, American Gangster, 3:10 To Yuma, The Bank Job, The Prestige, Rescue Dawn and A Scanner Darkly.
I’ll second a lot of dudelove’s list especially:
Taken, Bourne flicks, Prestige, Bank Job and The Departed
I’ll add:
Valkyrie, Defiance and the animated versions of Wonderwoman, Green Lantern, Hulk VS., and Next Avengers.
BTW I though Crank was utter crap.
@KenJ
I felt the same way about Discovery. The third time I turned it on and saw DC AGAIN, I was like WTF? I thought this was Discovery channel not the Documentary channel. I like DC but not ALL FREAKIN’ DAY.
INK, Crank is at least something original, for someone like Phil who’s been on a non stop diet of superhero movies it could be deceptively good on first watch.
Thumbs up on Valkyrie and Defiance too dude, also Body of Lies another good one. I’m going to be watching State of Play tomorrow, it looks worth my ten bucks.
Coming soon theatrically is Public Enemies and next year there’s only one superhero movie coming out, the rest is original ideas like Inception and fresh takes on long dead ideas like Robin Hood. So things are looking up, maybethe writers strike was the collective holiday Hollywood needed to come up with some good ideas.
What is it with Hollywood remaking movies these days? I believe that Hollywood needs to think outside the box and start searching for writers and directors to pitch new ideas. I am a writer myself and I am trying to find ways to sell my ideas, yet Hollywood makes it so hard to do so that you have to know someone who knows someone who is involved in the movie industry to make it to the big times. What do you guys think?
And another thing…Do you guys think that Tobey Maguire is too old to play spiderman? He’s 33 years old and the guy has signed on for Spiderman 4. They need to replace him with someone younger like Jake Gyllenhaal or Joseph Gordon-Levitt. As for Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane? Find someone hotter (maybe Ashley Tisdale). Hopefully the next Spiderman will be completely different from the last three. Darker, funnier, and more epic.
I loved the idea of Crank and the trailers made me pay the bucks to see it, but c’mon … it was awful. So bad in fact when they said they were making a second one I truly knew hollywood had run out of ideas and brains and they had enough cash lying around to make Scrooge McDuck jealous.
I watched “How to Lose Your Friends and Alienate People” (I think I got the title right). It has the guy from Sean of the Dead and Hot Fuzz – pretty funny. Highly recommended.
It also has Kirsten Dunst, but Jeff Bridges makes up for it.
I totally agree with dudelove with Shooter, Shoot ‘em Up and 3:10 to Yuma. Yeah, 3:10 was a remake, but it was AWESOME. I’ll be buying it on DVD as soon as it hits $5. LOL.
Is it just me, or is everyone else holding off on buying DVD’s until they’re bargain priced? I just can’t bring myself to buy a DVD for $15 any more. Especially when I know in a year or so, it’ll be $7 or $8. There are certain films that are an exception (i.e. Iron Man), but my dollars aren’t going as far today and I find that Netflix is a better and more efficient use of my cash.
Yeah, I noticed the same thing on Discovery. It is one of my favorite channels, but I’m not a big fan of Deadliest Catch. It was ok the first season or so, but it’s done to death now. BTW, I absolutely LOVE Mythbusters. One of the most interesting, and funniest, shows on TV.
Punisher: War Zone was a great movie. The ONLY reason why it failed at the box office is because the studio released it around Christmas. Comic book movies do not normally work well around the holidays. That’s why Blade: Trinity failed in 2004. Have the Punisher came out in September or October it would have done better. Hopefully the studio will consider a sequel based on strong DVD sells and bring back Ray Stevenson. He played the best Frank Castle. Perhaps we will see him in more movies in the future.
Are you serious lol?! War Zone was pretty crappy, i mean the action was good but the acting and dialog was awful and blade: trinity failed cause it was awful as well. Then again I really like the thomas jane version of Punisher and most people think that one is crap, so to each his own i suppose.
War Zone was terrible, and there’s no reason that a reboot should suck when the original was awesome. I want a Tom Jane Punisher sequel. That movie was great. Also, I wouldn’t mind seeing a Daredevil sequel(not Elektra, eesh.) But since there’s talk of a Reboot with Jason “Badass” Statham in talks, I say let it happen. Maybe if Fox loses the rights to it- that’d be even better. Imagine a Marvel film starring the Stath as Daredevil. Oh yeah.
Jason Statham is a great actor; but I just can’t see him as Dardevil. I believe Matt Damon would be a good Daredevil. As for a Dardevil reboot? There doesn’t need to be one. Dardevil was a good film; they could have done a sequel to it.
A lot of people complain how Spiderman is not nearly as funny in the movies as he is in the comic books or cartoons. What I find ironic is that in the video game (based on the movies) he actually makes jokes! It’s almost as if the movie game spiderman is funnier than the film version.
@ J Dizzle
Thomas Jane Punisher is good; but War Zone is better because it stays true to the comic book. Case close.
I just wanted to say a few things and get them off of my chest.
Will Farrell is not that funny. He can do some funny things in the proper role, but he’s simply bleeping overrated. Ditto Ben Stiller, Double ditto Owen Wilson. I have a hard time watching people making the leap thinking that being stupid equals being funny.
Casting is an artform, with the right people in the right roles, a movie can be magical. I wish the casting directors would read a script and a story and discuss roles and ideas with the writers, producers and director before casting a film. It seems these days that they simply go down the roster as to who is available and plug in the biggest name that’s on the short list.
I think John Cusack is seriously underrated and I wish he did more movies.
I wish Hollywood executives read more often, therefore we might see more literary works being made effectively into wonderful movies.
Why I enjoy marvel over DC? Marvel are producing more of their comic books into movies than DC. The only thing Warner Bros can squeeze out is Batman and Superman. Fine but what about Wonder Woman or the Flash? I’m happy that they are making a Green Lantern movie yet DC could easily make lesser known characters(like Green Arrow) into movies before they tackle the juggernauts. That’s what Marvel did with Blade. Anyway I am happy with the direction Marvel is taking. Whether their movies are good/bad/or just plan chessy, you have to give them credit for AT LEAST working on their properties. Look at DC, when are they going to make the next Superman movie? Where is Wonder Woman? Is Teen Titans coming soon and will we FINALLY see a Justice League movie? We will have to wait and see.

How ’bout that Terminator movie eh? Shame it’s not doing so well, hopefully it does T3 numbers overseas so T5 will be a reality.
Anyone check out the Valkyrie DVD or Blu Ray? If so what are the exras like?

Does anyone know if the director’s cut for “Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children” will only be on Blu Ray.
So at the risk of opening a can of worms… are you guys settling in and getting used to the new site design?
Vic

ty for the forum Vic….
Megan Fox is hotter than Hayden Panetierre. Why? Well personally I am more into brunettes than blondes.
Why I enjoy marvel over DC? Marvel are producing more of their comic books into movies than DC. The only thing Warner Bros can squeeze out is Batman and Superman. Getting use to the design. Took me a while … I don’t like change.
@ Vic, I’m loving it.
@ 790, dudelove, INK, Andy S … Thanks! I wrote all your suggestions down. Hardly know where to start, but at least I have a list…
BTW, I did watch the Bourne flicks. They’re awesome.
@piratedan
No prob, bud. I’ve always said there’s a fine line between “stupid-funny” and just plain “stupid.”
The last thing I really liked Will Ferrel in was “Elf” and I just don’t find either of the other two guys you mentioned funny either.
