After the release of the highly anticipated Dark Knight, where do you guy’s think that DC Comics should go next with superhero comics. Green Arrow is being touted, but the producer (David Goyer) has totally changed the story into a sort of prison-break action movie. Bad move IMHO.

My suggestion would be a Green Lantern film. It’s original because it blends superhero elements with a sci-fi Star wars setting. I think if they focus more on the adventure and sci-fi and less on the Superhero elements, they could have a very original film that will appeal to a very broad market.

What do you guy’ think DC should do?

Surma said,

I believe DC should one: give up on Superman two: Make a Green Lantern movie(I don’t care how) and three: make a movie with a villain as the main character(don’t care who)

I noticed the lack of Open Discussion last week and nearly mentioned it. Guess I should have. ;)
A movie about a villain would be very cool. Like that one. Think I’d like to see Lantern or Manhunter done, both have more you can do with them.

By the way, one of the first discussions I saw on here was about George Lucas sueing the bloke who claimed the stormtrooper design as his own. Does anyone know if and how this has been resolved?
Tried looking but couldn’t find anything.

Oh yeah! I googled ‘George Lucas sues’ and the second site on the list was screenrant. I was impressed! :)

Hey guys Seth Mcfarlane(Peter Griffin among other voices and creator of Family Guy) is confirmed as being the character Johann Kraus in Hellboy 2. I think it will be awesome, but when I mentioned this rumor(now its not) before no one seemed to care.

‘Speed Racer’ nearly bombed? LOL, no dude - it was, unfortunately for the studio, a nuclear bomb.

Regarding DC movies, it seems to me that they are afraid to get away from their two main and most well known properties. Hell, they can’t even get away from friggin’ Lex Luthor as a villain in the Superman movies! I think they should take a chance and branch out… Green Lantern would be a great choice IMHO and maybe they’ll consider alternate characters based on ‘Iron Man’s’ success.

Steven, thanks, but no I don’t know how it turned out. I imagine Lucas will (or has already) win/won.

Idk if anyone else has this problem, but I have a “suggestion”. I never remember the movie quotes you have at the top, because either I ignore the ads too quick or because I instantly scroll down to check the news. All I know is every now and then I’ll look up and see, and I’ll get mad cuz I always miss them.

Like I said if its just me, I’ll just try harder, but I couldn’t help but think maybe there is a better spot for them.

steven the git said,

That’s a good one. I love the quotes and I spot them now and then, but if they change evey day then lower down would be better. They are a bit out of the way up there.

Well, what about just scooting the ad thats always on the right side of articles in the Movies column down, and putting it there, or below it, and just make some kind of barrier between it and the list of movies.

steven the git said,

Yup, that sounds good to me. If nothing else, makes the words bigger would help, they are easy to miss like that. But often I come on here and am quick to scroll down to see what’s going on, so lower would be best.

In saying that, now we’re talking about them I keep looking at them! XD

Yeah, what’s the deal with that anyway? Producers / directors who don’t like comics should not be doing comic book movies.

Doesn’t this movie concept sound like they had a script on the shelf for a prison break movie, and someone said “hey, let’s just make it a Green Arrow movie!” ???

Green arrow could be a great movie character if the right people are behind it. 790 - wanna take a shot?

Hey Screen Ranters, anyone up for a real good Star Trek / Babylon 5 parody film/dvd?
Well I have the perfect one for you, Its called (”Star Wreck, in the Pirkinning”).
I know your thinking lame title but read on…..>

(Some spoilers ahead).
I’ll try to keep this brief:

I found this Finnish produced Sci-fi. (weird dark comedic parody) film at the Grand Slam Convention back a few weeks ago.
Just got around to watching the dvd last night.
The acting is Finnish with English subtitles, but it hardly mattered…
The Finnish language (after a few beers) sounds like Klingon anyway. Trust me.

The film opens with the story of Commander James B.Pirk and his fellow crew members, Lt.Cmdr.Dwarf and Lt.Info. (Their comedic versions of the Star Trek characters Kirk, Warf, and Data). Remember this is a weird dark comedy.
Their ship, a Sovereign class vessel crashes on earth (Finland).
They eventually take over the Russian factory that has been reverse engineering the warp core. After a brief Russian revolution Pirk talks the Russian president into building a him new ship.
A Russian slave force completes the brand new Sovereign class ship,as Pirk and the Russian president embark to take over the world.

This next part is filmed in the old style news b/w WW2 era looking footage. (Worth the price of the dvd). As we see the Pirk/Russian Alliance use the (Enterprise E) to basically roll over all the nations on Earth. Its sureal to see the Enterprise E take out the Statue of Liberty and other landmarks with phasers. (Remember its a weird dark comedy). The effects are movie grade, nothing cheesy.

After world domination is complete the Pirk/Russian Alliance builds a fleet of ships. (Of course there all the favorite Star Trek ships from Enterprise A thru D with the Defiant class, Akira and of course a Intrepid/Voyager class ship under the command of Captain Madeway). Lol.

Anyway Pirk gets board with Earth and decides to become Emperor of the Galaxy. After killing the Russian president he and his fleet leave Earth in search of better Earth like planets to rule over.

A Starfury (Babylon 5 ship) emerges from a ringhole and afters its destroyed (on site) for not being a Star Trek ship, (more or less) Lt.Info scans the debris and finds human remains. Pirk decides to take the fleet into the ringhole. Once they emerge on the other side they find themselves in the Babylon 5 universe.

At this point the film devolves into the funniest battle between the stupid Pirk and the longwinded Sheridan that has ever been seen on film…
The effects during the space battles are simply amazing.
Wacthing Voyager blow Whitestars out of space is breathtaking. The ships all look like somebody broke into Foundation Imaging’s mainframe and stole the programs. The ships look totally authentic and the space battle scenes are all new and original. These aren’t cut up scenes from the shows there new full CGI matte shots. Explosions, weapons systems all authentic.
Even the Excalber shows up.

Anyway the film is halarious and looks great in widescreen.
I know there’s a lot of fans that would really like this so I thought I would mention it.
Check out the trailer at.

someone needs to tell marvel and DC to stop signing these bad contracts where they get no say in the casting or the storyline. because of that clause we got movie directors who don’t know anything about spiderman or the x-men, making these movies, and stinking them up til all the oxygen is gone.

May 14th, 2008

There was a great cross-over comic - lasted three issues…

Batman vs Predator.

Totally Cool.. would that not be awesome,
Or Iron Man vs Godzilla. (Sorry guys, I’d root for Godzilla, like I did when he met Bambi.. ah, a classic if I do say so.)

Or - Thundercats vs Justice League.. nah, wait, too far out of their league, besides the Thundercats crossed paths with Superman some years ago in a japanese adaptation…

Or Dr. Who Vs Sherlock Holmes.. now there would be a match of wit!!

OK… I’m done.

Quotes? What quotes? Just foolin.. If they’re important enough, you’ll slow down to the appropriate speed limit and observe your surroundings.

In case you missed it:
“You seem a decent fellow, I hate to kill you.”
- Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Gotta go.. workin’ on my next expose of world shattering proportions .. or not.

I’d love to see DC use a so-called “B” character for a movie. “Iron Man” has proved that you don’t have to constantly use “A” characters for major motion pictures as long as the story is done properly and the movie is not shot like a kiddie movie. I also think Green Lantern would make a great movie, but I also think they could dig deeper and make a Captain Atom movie. He’s not a well-known character, so people would be a little more forgiving if artistic liberties were taken. Green Arrow would also be good, but not with the rumored script. Also, get the dude from Smallville who plays Oliver Queen. He’d be an AWESOME Green Arrow on the big screen.

Also regarding Smallville, if anyone collects the seasons on DVD, Best Buy has Season 6 for $20 this week…..just sayin’…..

All that I can think of have been horrible - Steel (with Shaq), Supergirl, Catwoman. I wonder if they don’t get the studio support like the A-listers.

Green Arrow would be great though, or maybe Hawkman / Hawkgirl. Or even something a little more obscure like Checkmate, and focus on the less ’super=powered’ characters.

Oh man, 790.. STAR WRECK! I saw that one some years back, maybe a couple of years ago, I don’t really remember. Basically I downloaded and watched it while I was still in my last job, and I’ve been in my current job for around 1.5 years.

The CGI is pretty good, quite impressive actually. They even did those massive space battles with ships from Star Trek and Babylon 5 going up against one another!

The ending was absolutely terrific.. something that Kirk, Spock, Bones and Scotty would have done if they were in the same position!

Andy said,
May 15th, 2008

Um Panda, those characters you mentioned are what I would consider the “C” characters. IMO, “B” listers are The Green Lantern, The Green Arrow, Aquaman and Flash. The “A” ones are Supes, Bats and Wonder Woman (although WW is more like a “B+” character.)

Jae Senn said,
May 15th, 2008

There are actually movie quotes at the top???

Man, this is embarrassing.. I only noticed it when someone mentioned it in the earlier posts.. My bad..

The next DC movie should be GREEN LANTERN!!! And they should set it in a retro-futuristic alternate ’50s (or late ’40s) like the Justice League feature cartoon.. that setting worked real well for Hal Jordan.. perhaps they can tie in Abin Sur’s spaceship crash with the Roswell crash, who knows..

Maybe throw in some “Earth vs Flying Saucers” stuff too ’cause that era is known for their UFO, foo fighters and flying saucer craze.

Besides, there are enough strange events in the ’40s and ’50s to justify a sci-fi theme that’s partially grounded in real events, like the Battle of Los Angeles, the Invasion of Capitol Hill and of course, the Kenneth Arnold sighting.

Jae Senn said,
May 15th, 2008

Oh heck, speaking of movies based on DC comics.. how about the other DC Vertigo hit, Garth Ennis’ “PREACHER”? That was my favorite comic series back then!!!

And also “Hitman”.. if they could find the right people to play Tommy Monaghan and Nat the Hat, the movie could be something like Lethal Weapon only that the heroes are hired guns instead of cops (and the main hero is infected with a space alien vampire parasite that gives him superpowers, that ought to make for some interesting plot elements).

The first Hitman storyline itself is like a cross between a John Woo film and Hellboy, with Tommy going up against the Lord of the Gun (IIRC), and encountering the demon Etrigan.

790, my admiration grows for the grumpy old robot head!
Just watched Star Wreck. Loved it. Not only did it look good, but they had the shows spot on.
When the Babylon5 leader decides to make a long speech, I thought, oh wow, they know the show. :D
Excellent stuff. Thanks again.

I guess today is a passable day to die!

Thanks Steven the Git!
It was great wasn’t it????!!!!
Its even better with beer.

Yeah every scene had a inside joke. Too many too count. Even alot of Babylon 5 stuff as well.

I loved that scene where the Excaliber destroys the Enterprise D and Pirk tells all ships to fall back.
And the next scene the crew of the Excaliber are like “40 seconds to main power restart”.
Clearly Pirk, never watched Crusade. LMAO!!!!

The visuals were awesome.

Cap. Fukov need I say more.

I thought the transporter effects are what they should have done on Enterprise.
(Primitive yet it looked real) o well,,,,

«Now if I can just get Vic to watch…..»

Fire Sparklers!!!

steven the git said,

The names were great fun. Garybrandy and Info, Fukov and Festerbester. That’s what appealed, they had to be fans to make that movie and fans ripping on something is always loveable.
Also the names of the weapons, light balls and twinklers! XD

Also loved the man charging the enemy only to be shot, and then crumples saying, ‘hey its war, people die, you know?’

Dwarf was excellent. Crying when slapped, and working in a hotdog stand at the start.

Admire the blokes behind it and all they went through to get it done too.

790 said,

I know anything goes in the weekly discussion so i have a question.
Is jon Favreau a lock to return as the director of Iron Man 2 ?
I am a frequent vistor to Comic Book Resources (CBR) the other day they had a story where favreau said he hadnt been contacted about the sequel, today they have a story where favreau told Howard Stern on his radio show that he was only paid 4 million dollars for the film and that he was the only major player not to be signed to a 3 picture deal.
CBR cites Comic Book Movie for the stern story .
Sounds like it could be a rocky negotiation.
i just thought it might be worth looking into.

John "Kahless" Taylor said,

Gary, I read the same story. Favreau did a fantastic job on IM and it boggles my mind why he wouldn’t be signed on to direct the next. Also, he is suppose to get a share of the profits but the site said it may not happen.

WB needs to make Flash (Barry Allen) and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) origin films. (they were best friends and the same age in the comics)

BTW, did anyone hear the news? THE FLASH IS BACK FROM THE DEAD AFTER A NEAR 25 YEAR ABSCENCE!!! SWEET!! It’s about time Barry Allen, the one, true, BEST Flash, was Flash again instead of yet another one of those rip off kid sidekicks. And he IS NOT one of the permanent deaths in comics, his reason for being, unlike the Waynes, Uncle Ben, and Krypton (or whoever else the haters pull outa their ass) was NOT to be dead so his sidekick could become Flash, and he was not a disliked/un popular character like Bucky Barnes and/or Jason Todd. Besides, keeping him dead for the sake of the “death has no meaning anymore in comics” and “doing this invalidates death” argument is ridiculous, we crossed that bridge waaaaaaay before anyone even thought Barry would be coming back, m’kay? We got Hal Jordan, the one, true, best/original GL again, along with Oliver Queen as Green Arrow and Ray Palmer as the Atom, Barry’s rightful place is as the Flash so I’m hella glad he’s back. Maybe it will help get WB to make a Flash film now…

these are all early estimates .
I got it all from Nikki Finkes website .
