As usual – talk about whatever you like as long as it’s related to movies, TV or Screen Rant itself – just remember to play nice. icon smile Open Discussion March 13, 2013

  1. Okay so I know I am about to start a big geek debate but I have to know Star Wars or Star Trek? I just turned in a argumentative esasay for my comp 2 class on this subject and I was just curious what side some of yall fell on. Me personally I pick Star Wars what about yall?

    • Gosh I keep bringing this up, but the only one I have seen of both series was the most recent Star Trek so… my answer is….

      Galaxy Quest! :D

      • Bahaha I love that movie!Good choice!

    • @ matthew

Star Wars. Star Wars had in my opinion better ship mobility and fight scenes. The technology was more advanced as well. The Star Trek universe revolved around an almost communist way of life which I disagree with.

      • @ Writer

Well, the (movie) Star Wars universe revolves around a galaxy-wide fascist dictatorship run by WizardHitler, so you’re between the devil and the deep blue sea on that one. :-)

        • @ The Big Dentist

Technically the Rebellion is fighting the WizardHitler you speak of and they stand against what he believes. In Star Trek they support the idea of Communism instead of fighting against it.

            • @ The Big Dentist

The clip you provided was informational but it still is not a world I would want to live in. It isn’t because of my TV, my possessions or the need to improve myself. It isn’t that I don’t like Star Trek because trust me I really do it is just that I can relate more to the Star Wars universe. I have my personal beliefs and in a universe like Star Treks you really cannot have those. If Roddenberry’s version of the future comes to pass than I would sadly have to stand against it.

              • That’s fair enough.

      • @Writer

I am going to blow your Star Wars ships are more advanced than Starfleet Ships right out of the water. Based on everything from the movies.

You may argue the points, but they speak for themselves in the movies.

        1. A Star destroyer could not detect the added bulk and weight of the Millennium Falcon on its Command Tower.

        2. The have the worse navagation system, as evidence by the one Star Destroyer that came into close to Hoth and Warned the Rebels.

        3. That When Chasing the falcon, two Star Destroyers came close to point of scraping their hulls against each other.

        4. Their Hyperdrive has to be computed before they make the jump to hyperspace.

        5. The Super Star Destroyer had its Command Tower destroyed by the smallest aircraft with in the Rebel Fleet, the A-Wing fighter.

        6. The fact that shield generators for Star Destroyers are exposed and easily defeated.

        7. They have to dump their trash before they make the jump to hyperspace.

        8. TIE Fighters lack shields, and thus an entire squadron could be taken out by one Starfleet Ship.

        9. AT-AT. Pretty intimidating, but yet taken down by tow cables?

        10. Built not one, but Two Death Stars and leave them both vulnerable with exposed or direct access to their reactors?

        11. One Ion Cannon based on the ground was able to clear a path for the rebel ships to escape amid a fleet of Star Destroyers.

        12. Rebel Ships are big and fast, but lack the mobility to outrun larger ships.

        13. There is not one engineer or mechanic in almost 30 years not smarter than or more capable than 1 Astromech Droid.

        14. The Rebel Fighters require fuel to operate.

        15. Imperial Forces on Endor, could not detect or defeat Ewoks.

        16. AT-ST Defeated by Ropes and Crashing Logs.

So Writer, please tell me how much more advance Star Wars ships are over Starfleet Ships?

    • neither and both

      • good call! star trek reboot trumps prequels backwards and forwards.

        • agreed!

    • I’ve always been more of a Star Trek fan, it’s just the thing for me. I was never that impressed with Star Wars, but I don’t mind it

    • Never give up, never surrender! Star Trek for me!

    • I’m more of a Star Wars fan, and it’ll always be my favorite movie franchise, but Star Trek’s pretty sweet too.

It’s the age old argument, why choose one when you can have both!

    • I have never understood the need to choose between the two. it’s apples and Oranges.

  2. Just started watching the land before time with my little sister again . A real trip down memory lane Im as I’m in my twenties now such a classic , definitely could use a 3d makeover or a reboot any thoughts .

  3. Easy answer: both. Why should I pick sides when I can and do enjoy both? I also don’t pick sides in the Marvel/DC debate. I pick both sides as well. Life’s too short and movies are too much fun for pointless fan wars.

    • This was supposed to be a reply to matthew’s question, but the commenting system is acting up again.

      • Oh Bother.

        • Anybody notice that sometimes the reply titles (Post a Reply to ___ )are acting up? No mater who i try to respond to it says Post a Reply to Tereza. I think the whole system needs a reeboot.

          • now I feel special ;p

            • Heh! yeah, I guess i responded to you one to many times… or maybe it is my computer’s psyche reaching out to yours. ;)

              Just kidding :)

              • lol

      • @thelostwinchester haha understandable to be completely honest I feel the same way with Marvel and DC but with Star Wars I think its purely a nostalgic thing with me I have known and grown up these characters since I first received the original trilogy on VHS back in the 90s when I was four years old for Christmas now that’s not to say I don’t like Star t
Trek I actually enjoy it a lot and I honestly don’t see why certain people have to argue over such things but it does make for a fub and enjoyable paper to write…lol

        • *fun* not fub lol

  4. @matthew,

Its all preference. I agree with TheLostWinchester though: why not both? Thats like asking “What’s the greatest movie/actor of all time?”. There isn’t one, it all comes down to what you really like.

  5. Star Wars for the action and story. Star Trek for the stories. But to be honest, I love them both.

  6. Picture this Phone Call.

Bryan Mills “I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you. ”

Chuck Norris ” You are right. You don’t know me.

      • Gotta love Ellen. That was funny.

  7. The new venture bros season 5 sneeak peek came out.

    • @Professor

LackLuster Blockbusting Films is a go.

    • I’m in MCMURF15 Pictures

      • Why does McMurf sound like a McDonalds Menu Item I do not want to know the contents?

        • Bahaha yeah people tell me that because it is also my Instagram name but to be honest the M stands for Matthew the C stands for Charles and Murf is short for Murphy

          • and your SSN is? :) I swear I’m not Melissa McCarthy :D

        • @Jeff W – The McMurf sandwich. It’s a surf and turf burger slathered in mayo. Available for a limited time.

          • @Professor

            YUCK YUCK YUCK!

          • This reminds me of The Whole Nine Yards. “Every red-blooded American knows that the only condiment that you are ever supposed to put on a hamburger is KETCHUP! Or MAYBE some of that SPECIAL SAUCE you like so much here in Canada; which I think has a little bit of mayonnaise in it too! But I swear to God when they start slapping that mayonnaise on there I could kill somebody.”

      • I have also created my on league October 22 Films if anyone wanted to join mine to

        • I’m there!. Procrastination Pictures.

        • Cow Overlord Pictures is in the pasture of October 22 Films.

    • thats an ingenious idea! sounds like fun. Do you give a list of all the movies? I would hate to make my list omitting some key boxoffice player like pacific rim or oblivion or something.

      • They have the list of movies for you. They are in order by release date. It’s a lot of fun, but watch out…you never know if GI Joe will skip out on it’s release date a month in advance. ;)

        • ok awesome! yeah I’ll take a look at it when I get home if theres time. I can’t access the link currently cuz I’m at work and its blocked :P

    • Hey man cheers I joined up.

    • I’ll try again. I signed up but then didn’t let me log in.

    • Thanks everyone who signed up! I’ve more than doubled the number of members today! Good Luck!

Smurfs 2 will not be the #1 movie of the year. You’ve heard it here first!

    • Useless Films is up and running. Lets see how this rolls out.

  8. saw The Prestige and How To Train Your Dragon again yesterday :) I love both of those movies so so much!!!

    • @Letaher Cherrio

I am in your league, you should be easy to figure out my studio.

      • LOL thanks for joining!

  9. Even though Whedon and Ruffalo are denying rumors of PH and WWH, if they were to do that i think a Civil War-ish type storyline would be fantastic for Avengers 3 or somewhere around there. Anyone else?

    • I still think they’ll do the Planet Hulk story in Avengers 3, it won’t surprise me if a Civil War type story is in the second one tbh. it sure is personal..

    • Though I am loath to say it, I think Civil War is to big target for them to aim at. You would need MANY more heros and villans to achieve it. That being said, I do find it intresting that Peggy Carter(?), Crossbones, and Red Skull, all intigral character for the “Death of Captain America” arc have been introduced…

      • I feel the same way that Civil War and WWH need way more heros not to mention heros that the movie IP belongs to studios other than Marvel/Disney.

  10. Wait… The Bioshock movie was scrapped, primarily, because Watchmen did badly? Did Watchchmen really do badly at the Box-Office?

    • from wikipedia
      Budget $130 million
      Box office $185,258,983

so it didnt do spectacular, no.

      • Thanks. It’s kind of sad really, I’m also gonna do some research on how well received It was by the critics, because its really disheartening and frustrating that the Bioshock movieWell be sidelined because of the performance of another movie. But if Watchmen was loved by critics then why not have a R-rated Bioshock?

        • Watchmen got mixed reviews at its release. The majority of the reviews were positive however. Its at like 60% on RT. The general consensus is that it was visually spectacular but can be a bit too complex for those who haven’t read the comics.

I must be the exception to the rule cuz I didn’t read the comics but I loved the movie. I thought it was thoroughly awesome.

          • If a Bioshock movie is anything like the Watchmen movie was in terms of material and feel, I’m totally down to see it.

  11. How many hours a day do you sit?

    • to many. I wish I had a standing desk at work.

      • Interesting article. Kind of seemed like the figures were off, but it makes sense. I worked landscaping/construction throughout my 20s. I was in the best shape of my life. I looked like Thor or Aqua Man…without the hammer or the trident. Then, I decided to put myself through college in my late 20s. Now, I work 75% of my time in an office at a computer. I gained almost 100 pounds in four years. I’m now part of weight watchers and I exercise daily…but so far that is basically maintaining this weight. I blame not being on my feet for the entire day, moving around, and doing the natural weight lifting that comes with day to day blue collar labor. But, with this white collar job, I have more energy to come home and be a good father…
so you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both, and there you have……

    • I’m a programmer, so there’s no need for me to stand up. If I’m standing I’m not coding. I’d guess I’m sitting 9 hours a day.

      • According to that article, you have mental health issues. ;) The wording of the article struck me as funny:

“…watching TV, using a computer, driving, etc. — sitting time outside of work was negatively associated with mental health for women. Again, men got off comparatively easy — only sitting time at the computer negatively impacted their mental well-being.”

Why could that be? Hmmmm. What is the internet most widely known for use of? Hmmmm. What could it be? Hmmmm. It’s porn. And of course that’ll mess with our mental well-being because men think with their…….

  12. I sit normally 4 hours a day. I am in the air for 4 hours, with 2 15 breaks and an hour lunch.

Unless there is an emergency or a assist police officer call, then I am in the air for as long as pursuit/SAR is in effect, or until I get to the point where I am about 5 minutes from reserves kicking in then I have to return to base.

Full time as a Coastguard pilot, 6 hours out 6 hours down.

    • Well, good to know one of our public servants is focused on the radio and the radar, rather than the internet…

Just kidding…but seriously, hope you are not posting on duty, lest it come back to haunt you one day.

      • No Jeff, hard to get a good internet signal in a helicopter.

No, I only check in when I am off or on the deck. I work 0000 to 0800 hours.

        • Good to hear. I’m in law enforcement myself, over 20 years now, and I have also found this site to be a good place for some escapism and relaxation. Interesting stories, topics, and discussions.

          • @Jeff

We have way to much in common, though my 25 years in the Coast Guard was a little different.

            • There can be only one!

  13. Check out ‘Eat More Weigh Less’ by Dr. Dean Ornish. I would love to try his program but my food allergies put too many of his recipe items on my forbidden list…

  14. Still haven’t seen anything at all about Defiance the tv show here on Screen Rant nor Defiance the game on Game Rant. You’d think since it’ll be the first time it’s been done that I’d be seeing some information here at my favorite entertainment information site, but I guess I was wrong.

    • Looks like a potentially awsome show. Kind of reminds me of Firefly, but with aliens, and during the middle of the war between the Alliance and the Browncoats.

    • Defiance looks fantastic. Gonna be great having another futuristic sci-fi show on the air.

      • I’m looking forward to it as well. From the little I’ve seen and read about it through their facebook page and website, it looks really cool. It still really surprises me that the guys here haven’t said anything about it, which I find odd since they’re usually on top of things like this. This is the best entertainment news website in my opinion. So I like to see what they have to say about stuff. I guess they just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

  15. Do you think Xmen: DOFP will flop or is it just my low opinion of xmen. For some reason I dont care for xmen and fantastic four but I do feel they are the least popular franchises of marvel.

    • Well to me “Days Of Future Past” belongs on a Moody Blues album, but that’s just me. ;)

Seriously though with such a heavy agenda about fixing things from the other movies do you really think there will be room left for an interesting story about the X-Men characters? Sure everyone will go all ga-ga about Sentinels and they’ll probably have the requisite fight where X-Men take down a few but is that really enough? Then if the past does get changed obviously what of whatever was built up about the characters from one, two, XO Wolverine, or First Class?

I think its all rather impersonal. Move this chess piece get Cyclops back, move this piece get Gene back etc, etc. Might have been better just to have rebooted the whole thing. After all there are kids that have been watching the rebooted X-men cartoons that weren’t even alive when the first live action movie came out! By the time this comes out they’ll be old enough to be buying tickets on their own to see it. Will they even care about all the continuity errors, misfires, etc? Probably not. They’ll just wonder what all the fuss is over and why they worked so hard to make this when they could’ve made a more interesting, character driven story, with heart…
