Open Discussion – March 11, 2009

Mar 11, 2009 by

Vic Holtreman

It’s Wednesday, so that means it’s time for our weekly discussion post – but I’ve been wondering if you guys are still interested in this? With the increased volume of news coverage here on the site I’m just wondering if you still like we need this feature?

As usual – talk about whatever you like as long as it’s related to movies, TV or Screen Rant itself.

"Follow us if you want to live."

  1. I saw Watchmen yesterday and I loooooooooved it :)
I’m a huge fan of the graphic novel , so I know it very well.
I thought the movie was , for me , a perfect adaption. It was perfectly cast , everything looked magnificent and I felt that the stuff that Snyder left out did not harm the story at all .
    mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :)

  2. Yeah I like this because it lets us talk about stuff you don’t mention.

Like Castle. Being a Firefly fan I had to check it out and I really liked it.

And what the heck happened to Eureka? I’m missing it terribly.

I think Watchmen fell a bit short of the mark. Not enough information to make you care or understand the characters basically.

And I’m sorry guys, I watched ‘Let the Right One In’ last night and HATED it. I kept waiting on something to happen and nothing ever really did.

  3. Vic, you truly can’t get rid of the Open Discussion. There is no other site that offers a chance for the readers to lead the conversation. It’s almost a breath of fresh air, a break from the streaming news coverage that, at times, can be overwhelming to keep track of.

I love reading these posts midway through the day and watching the flow of the conversation go from Heroes, to Joss Whedon’s TV stuff, to cinematic theories, to asking you how much traffic you get…you can’t buy that kind of honesty.

Alright, that’s enough smoke blown. You get the point.

    Keep it!

  4. Keep the thread, Vic, please.
Where else can the little man get a voice?

If only congress had an open discussion day with its electorate maybe we wouldn’t be in this mess of an economy. :)

  5. Thanks for the feedback, folks. I just saw that last week’s only generated 8 comments and that’s why I was asking.

    Vic

  6. I always wait for the open discussion every week. It’s good to hear “Random” news and talk rather than waiting for a headline. And if I have anything I want to ask, I can do so without having to wait for an on-topic article. So I like it. And hey, another movie website copied it right from you, so you know it’s a good thing if it’s imitated.

  7. Humaaan!! If you remove this thread I will gut you with my bat’leth!!

While I wouldn’t go as far as Kahless, I agree you should keep the thread. Hey Kahless, here’s a book to eat! :-)

Heroes is really looking good, IMHO. Sure, it’s taking a lot of stuff from X-Men but it’s still very entertaining. Now we have Lionel Luther as Sylar’s dad. I’m lovin’ it!

  8. RastaZen, I have to disagree about the perfect casting comment, Malin Akerman and Matthew Goode were poor choices.

    Keep the Open Discussion!

  9. I saw Watchmen the other night and was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a more traditional comic book type movie with a very dark side. Turned out to be an interesting murder mystery with some very cool and unusual characters. I really enjoyed it and recommend anyone who is not a fan of the graphic novel (such as myself) to see it. It is a rare original to come out of Hollywood!

    @Vic

Don’t dump the Open Forum, Please. I know it seems you may not always get a lot of posts, but where else can we ‘rant’ about any thing that strikes us?

  10. I liked Watchmen but I would agree that the character development lacked a little. That won’t stop me from seeing it again and then buying the DVD.

I’m disappointed to hear that Lethal Weapon 5 is dead. I was looking forward to that one.

  11. Vic, I know I am late on this but KEEP IT!
This is a great thread to talk about anything .

  12. I would second the thoughts on Castle, been a while since a scripted TV show had me laughing out loud with dialogue. Yes it’s formulaic, but the acting appears to rise above it for the most part.

  13. Hey guys, first time poster here.
Love the site! I come here every day, and yes, please keep this open Open Discussion posts.

With that said I was wondering (since it doesn’t get mentioned very often) if anyone here is a Chuck fan and if you are, what are your thoughts on the last episode?

I actually enjoyed it very much. Casey’s joke timing brilliant as usual. Also quite liked the british guy (don’t remember his name), which is unusual as I usual don’t like character who mess with the Chuck/Sarah stuff. Lol.

  14. Absolutely keep the Open Discussion. If nothing else it tells me when it’s Wednesday! :)

Be a shame to get rid of it when you’ve clearly got the hang of posting it on time. ;)

  15. @piratedan: Yes! I was also laughing out loud and that is what I liked most about it I think :D

Hey also: Lie to Me comes on tonight. Anyone else thinking they want to study this stuff like I do? haha.

  16. “Be a shame to get rid of it when you’ve clearly got the hang of posting it on time.”

@ Vic & Steven the git..LMAO!! That was funny for people who have been frequenting this site for while..where is 790..he usually had to remind you that it was due Vic..Love this thread please keep it going!!

    Cheers

  17. @David P

Nice to have you finally chime in. :-)

And don’t worry folks, you’ve convinced me to leave this weekly discussion post in place.

    Vic

  18. @ evie
I LOVE Lie To Me :)
and I absolutely want to study that stuff :)

  19. You know it was strange vic, last week i just Had nothing i wanted to talk about. But this week….

Whos unintentionally becoming a fan of Sylar like me? It seems like i just cant help it with the direction they are sending his character.

  20. @ David P
I enjoyed the last Chuck episode. The only thing about this show is they’ve dumped most of his interaction with the Buymore co-workers/bosses. To me, those were the funniest parts. Now it seems everyone has a solo story going while Chuck hardly shows up. It’s just not as interesting that way.

  21. @ Ken X
I know. In season 1, he was the creepy villain I loved to hate. Now I can’t help but sympathize with him no matter how hard I try. It seems they’ve just revealed too much about him which had a demystifying effect. He’s cool, just not scary anymore.

  22. @Rasta
I haven’t seen the show, so I don’t know how they tackle it, but a huge problem with some of these “tell tale signs” of a lie is that people understand one part of the concept and think it applies universally. For example, a while back someone mentioned on a documentary or on some show about how you watch for signs of nervousness, such as scratching the nose, to see if they are lying. Now just because of that, a lot of people who think they are experts now because they heard that one comment will think everyone scratching their nose while they’re talking is lying… Well, what they don’t realize is that sometimes the nose scratching could be due to… an itch…

It’s more of a patterning that you’ll have to get used to and it’s different from individual to individual. And sometimes takes a bit of “baseline” conversation to kind of get used to what is typical of honest answers versus dishonest ones. Sometimes it’s not what they do but what they don’t do. There are also posture and other passive things to look out for. Examples of this is if the subject is sitting down, leaning back away from the person they are talking to is a sign of not wanting to talk to that person, they are “distancing” themselves from that person. Crossing of arms is often a defensive reaction or to keep their hands from doing other things that can show nervousness or dislike of the person they are speaking of. Looking at you with their eyes only and not their head is another sign that they don’t want to talk to you, etc. etc.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure they did extensive research before they put together a show, but sometimes they don’t, but it still works since it targets an audience that don’t know the difference. Case in point is CSI. Basically, what happens on that show has almost no relation to real Crime Scene Techs, lol. But people find it interesting anyhow. But I still find it amusing how some people watch that and think that is actually how it happens…

  23. @wes: im really excited to see him go after the hunter!

  24. @VIC: just a suggestion to generate more discussion here. Maybe make it a sticky for a few days so if you post a bunch of news afterwards it doesnt kinda get lost or ignored because its so far down.

  25. @Ken X

That’s a good idea, but I don’t have a way to do that right now, nor the time to set it up. I’ll definitely keep it in mind.

    Vic

  26. Has there been any coverage of 12 Rounds here at Screen Rant?

  27. @Gary

I haven’t even heard of that one.

    Vic

  28. Vic,
    I am not surprised,
    because it stars Jon Cena
Cena plays a cop named Danny Fisher.
He arrest a serial killer but the murderers girlfriend is accidentally killed during the arrest.
So, on the one year anniversary of the tragedy,He breaks out of prison and kidnaps Dannys wife .
In order to rescue her Danny must play a game with 12 rounds.
A large part of the game has to do with making Life and death choices that could result in the deaths of innocent people.
    The trailer is out there,
    So are the ads .
It comes out on the 27th.
I know how people here feel about Cena,
But the story seems interesting to me.

  29. I just found out from Nikki Finkes site that actor Ron Silver has passed away.
The site had no details ,
But I found out he had been suffering from Esophogal Cancer for two years,
It was described as a peaceful death.
    He died in his sleep.
I just had to mention it,
    I was a real fan.
    Ron Silver was 62.
