Open Discussion – Mar 12, 2008
Mar 12, 2008 by Vic Holtreman
Since this was so popular last week, I think we’ll make it a weekly event.
I’ll open the floor to you to discuss whatever TV or movie related topics are weighing heavy on your mind.
Not to have this take over the discussion, but maybe you could help me come up with a snappier title for this than “Open Discussion.”
Have at it!
Around the web:

Well I was just looking at my Halo action figures here, and thought about the canned movie. I’m a little confused why did it get canned again. It looked like they had a good chance at it, I think I remember it being legal problems.
I would not care if there was no movie, but apparently this last game was THE last game in the series whether u believe that or not (I find it hard to) if it wasn’t a good idea before we deserve a movie now.
Surma, I don’t know. The only thing we’ve written about it is here:
Halo 3 Video Showcase Movie’s Potential
Some movies just take a lot longer to make it to the big screen for some reason. It took forever for Iron Man to finally get made, but in the end that one will be worth the wait.
Maybe the same will happen to Halo?
Hi All,
Last night i went out and bought “We Own The Night” on DVD. And I have say I was really disappointed with move. I was really shocked with
Joaquin Phoenix acting in it. I like phoenix I think he is an excellant actor but he is really awful in this movie. And Mark Wahlberg is typically Mark Wahlberg. Maybe it’s me. Anybody like the movie?
Yea Surma I’m a big fan of Halo. Last I heard was that Microsoft wanted a big chunk of distribution control and they couldn’t find a studio to go along with it.
As much as I love the game I don’t think a Halo film would really do well. The game centers around 1 character and let’s face it he dosnt really have much of a personality. I don’t think he even spoke until Halo2 was released. I’ve seen a real great trailer up here on Screen Rant, its that live action warthog clip. That looked real good to me but a entire film ? Obvioulsy there going to need a real good script and I think that’s the real hold-up.
If Microsoft took all the story elements from all 3 games you stil wouldn’t really have a great film. Let’s face it Halo is a game to be played not watched.
And also Surma I’m sure that Bungie/microsoft are currently developing a Halo 4 game. The series didn’t end at H3. Sure it looked that way but Master Chief went into Cyro-suspension so he’s not dead. I thin the game should start fresh with MC waking up say 200 years in the future. He could be found by some type of robotic probe. Since its 200 years into the future he could get a suit upgrade as well as placed into some sort of new conflict with a new alien race that has located yet more advanced Halo worlds.
But again (IMO) Halo is a game , I think a film version is a very risky project one that could ruin Halo if done badly.
Id like to bring up a question about the new Star Trek film.
My question is assuming the film is successful where do they go from there? Ok so we’ve got possibly a sequel afterwards that will take at least 2 years to make. Ok so its around 2011 then what ok another sequel possibly that could take another 2 years minimum ok so its around 2014 and we have the 3rd sequel. Then what? Are they going to reboot TOS as a tv show or start a new Star Trek tv show based on some other TOS spin-off?
Sure this new film version of Kirk and Company sounds great for the short term but longterm wise it dosnt make much sense to me?
Love the “Open Discussion” forum, and glad to see people are already establishing a thread of communication. I have a couple ideas for a name- “Screen Vent Forum” or “Misc. Rants & Raves” something along those lines. Regardless, it’s nice to have a spot to bring outyour thoughts.
“Dave Stevens you will be missed”
So I want to know if anyone watched the Stargate movie that came out? What did they think. It was a let down for me and i just cant say why. I dont know whats bothering me about it, so i will need to watch it again. I would like to know what others thought about it.
Hi Vic … just had a thought about a name …
“what’s on your mind?”
I do like “Misc Rants and Raves” too.
Ranting and Raving, good title??
On that film “We own the night”. I didn’t see it because it looked like every other “Mark Wahlberg with a gun in hand” film. Sounds like it was crap….
Anyone see the film “Into the Wild”.
That was a great film. Not sci-fi but a great film anyways.
I watched the Stargate SG-1 movie last night and overall I enjoyed it. At first I found it hard to get into because it’s been a while since I’ve seen the actors playing those roles in a while but once it got going it felt like “coming home.”
Not sure how I felt about bringing the replicators back, though.
I didn’t have time after I watched it to write up a review, sorry.
Vic
790, one correction, bungie has split from mircrosoft so they won’t be collaborating on that and bungie them selves said thats the last of halo from them and that they are moving on to other projects they’ve wanted to do.
Yea Surma I remember reading something about that split but I thought that it was more of a license on new games type of split. Bungie wanted to break away from Microsofts taking half of the profits on new games.
Halo is such a huge and successfull game that I can’t see Bungie abandoning it.
Not to mention Bungie has allways said they are NOT working on any new Halo games since the first one.
By Bungie putting out a statement saying there not working on a Halo sequel practically gaurantees that they are… I don’t see why not Halo 3 was huge and there’s no letting up online.
I am looking forward to the SG-1 films, please no more spoilers other than the one Vic let slip, PLEASE!!!! Speaking of Stargate, I saw that SciFi played the movie the other night. I had forgotten how much better Richard Dean Anderson is as Colonel O’Neill than Kurt Russell. Not that Russell was awful, I just think MacGyver played the part better….or maybe it was just the 10 seasons or so that he played the part that he became O’Neill.
Instead of “Open Discussion”, maybe “Reader Rants and Raves?”
Theres a difference between saying there is no sequel and just not showing screen shots or trailers for a new game. Bungie has always been secretive about their games but never said they weren’t making more. You could argue they did that with halo 2 but they never said no halo 3 are u kidding me.
Well yea Bungie after making Halo didn’t offically admit that they were working on sequel for a long time and then they gave out a release date they couldn’t make and then they changed the date all together.
After H2 Bungie again didn’t admit to a sequel for awhile after the game was out. Now Bungie is officially saying Halo is on the shelf for now. In the meantime Halo Wars is about to come out. Its going to be an RPG for the 360 console. (A very different gamestyle for you non-gamers). Also H3 is blazzing a trial of online success on Xbox live. The life of a Video game is a long one. I would predict we will see a Halo 4 game in late 2009.
Anyway Surma what kind of direction do you think Halo should take if they make a film??
Movie news, overall, has been dry since before the strike. Sometimes I felt there was more news during, but that’s probably because they were generally still making them. If the actors strike, it’ll be 100% shutdown. That’s probably why it’s so dry these days.
heath
I really don’t know the real gritty realistic style the shorts had seemed to work, but like you said “a whole movie?”. Other than that, I see the first game as being perfect for a movie.
But you have to remember that Microsoft still has the rights to Halo thats why ensemble is making Halo Wars.
I’ll tell you one thing though, Do the Darth Vader here, don’t show his face and use the original voice and if you show his face either it be death or flashback to when hes too young to tell what he would look like now.
Heath I’ll tell ya its slow right now in Hollywood. Since the strikes been
settled it seems like alot of productions are taking off in super slowmo.
(IMO) The studios are dragging their collective feet and biding their time for this SAG deadline, meanwhile I’ve heard nothing out of SAG to suggest a settlement. I’m growing concerned that we may see a SAG strike afterall.
(Conpiracy? Yes). I’m not sure why but both sides should be working on avoiding this strike yet I don’t see any evidence that they are…
I would love to see Screen Rant look into this.
Yea Surma well you know that Microsoft is going to fund a branch in Bungie to keep Halo going even if its a r&d outfit.
It wouldn’t make economic sense to strickly stay online with Halo 3. That market will top off and fans will expect another chapter. No matter what Bungies says there up too it would be coporate suicide to sit on their hands when it comes to the biggest Video game franchise in history…
After watching the 1st Pirates of the Carribean film I do believe it possible to write a film based on a ride or a video game and make a huge amount of cash but in the long run what will Halo turn into a film franchise or a video game?
Will Halo 2 and 3 suck as bad as Pirates 2 and 3?? This could get ugly.
I have read a few articles on this fabulous website regarding the possibility of another Aliens vs Predator crapfest. While I agree that considering the first two attempts, the 3rd attempt should be really bad on all levels and piss of the loyal fanbases of both creatures, I still have to wonder if there is a salvageable storyline for either Aliens or Predators anymore.
I thought about it a while, and started to think that it could be possible to transition the storyline to the takeover of Earth by the Aliens, which was a fantastic 3 book set. I dont know where they could go with the Predators right now, i have to say the luster is off this franchise.
Anyhow, this was my first post here, i have been lurking a while now. I really enjoy reading the articles and discussion. I dont really know much about the Halo games, so I thought i would throw this out there.
Hey kyyle, nice of you to “de-cloak.”
I hope you join in on the fun here more often!
Andy, SORRY about the spoiler on SG-1, bro! Didn’t even think about that, dang it!
Vic
Yea kyyle23 anything other than more stupid predators on alien action would be fine with me.
If they do make another AvP film I wouldn’t be too surprised if it goes direct to dvd.
Master chief is Duke Nukem. you guys did’nt know that? he just cant show his face cause of his contract with 3D Realms. infact halo 1 2 and 3 are just the first chapters in the Duke Nukem Forever game -
and cause, sure old arnold would have played him in the movie back in the 90′s – but who should play him now?
So Duke battled on Ringworlds against a alien foe called the Covenant? Wow I guess Halo’s a blatant rip-off?
One if not the biggest plotlines goin in Halo is that you never see Master Chief’s face.
I think once they slap an actors face in that outfit and unvail Master Chief to be “Vin Diesel, Bruce Willis, Carrot Top , whatever” its going to ruin it…
Also on Arnold doing any future action films would be highly unlikely.
He can barely do his (infamous leader)job now and its aging him bigtime.
I have a title suggestion. The Weekly Vent. Short and simple.
How bout….
“Ventilation shaft”
?????
Hey gang Cloverfield on dvd 4-22 !!
Like I said 790 you don’t want a big name actor to play the mc just somebody to do the action and the original guy to do the voice, then if they do show him they don’t even really need him to talk just be a face that no one knows.
Right on Surma.
The voice actor that plays Master Chief is Steve Downes. He could and should do the voice if they do a film.
